Little Hiro’s owner Ian Kwok decked in shirt and shorts does looks like a ‘little hiro’ himself, a 20-something young entrepreneurship who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu London, and whose father is better known as Uncle Stanley from Island Creamery. The creativity runs in the family.
Little Hiro, a new Hawaiian-Japanese BBQ & Grill replaced Burger Shack at King’s Arcade. But Bt Timah residents and students (my Hwa Chong great grand juniors) who are fans of the original Burger Shack need not worry, the good old burgers remain with set prices for students.
After a trip to a wedding in Hawaii, Ian was inspired to take this plunge to re-create a beachside barbecue look at the restaurant, with Hawaiian-Japanese influences such as Sanzoku black pepper sauce and Habanero Volcano sauce in the offerings.
The burgers are still the best thing here, such as the Waikiki Deluxe ($8.20) of bacon, melted cheese and grilled pineapple with handmade beef patty. Bacon and pineapple together, while somewhat predictable, does the trick of giving a heavy-tasting burger a much-needed bounce of sweetness.
Though ramen burgers have taken over many countries by storm, the same cannot be said about Singapore. I am surprised. Why are so few restaurants offering them?
Little Hiro’s does their own versions of Sanzoku Pepper Beef and Chicken Karaage Ramen Burgers ($8.90). The imported ramen noodles are cooked in a special home-made shio (chicken, pork and sea salt) stock briefly before cooling and mixing it with egg, then patties are shaped for grilling.
While I thought that the noodle ‘bun’ could be firmer and crisp on the outside, the entire burger while messy to eat actually stays quite in shape. The shio does add some flavours to the noodles, and the chicken karaage juicy and tasty. This carb-loader would need two to share (especially when you are on a #1mkg challenge).
The main disappointment came from the grill. The Tokyo-style Karubi Beef Short-Ribs ($9.90) were over-done and elastic.
The young vibes here do not depart much from Island Creamery and the former Burger Shack, except that this may be more colourful and bright.
Oh yes, if you thought the posters and logo are cute, Ian designed them too. Fwahhh. Multi-talented.
