LUNA – Undiscovered Cake Cafe At Amoy Street, Offering Orh Nee Cake, Matcha White Chocolate, And Yuzu Cheesecake

Not to be confused with Lunar Coffee Brewers located at OUE Downtown Gallery few streets away, LUNA is the newest addition to the hip Amoy Street.

Indeed, the surrounding area of Telok Ayer and Stanley Street is known to be lined with several cafes, such as Common Man Stan, Sarnies, Upside Down Coffee , Dapper Coffee, Free The Robot, Moonstone, Pantler and more.

It is interesting to know that LUNA is right smacked in the middle of several cycling studios and F45 training Centre, offering cheat meals and sweet indulgence to the gym-goers.

Some people exercise to eat, and I (unfortunately) happen to be one of them.

Stepping into LUNA, I was greeted with an entire row of pastries on the counter, ranging from Croissants ($4), Madelines ($2), Dark Chocolate Walnut Brownie ($3.80) to Matcha Chocolate Chip Scones ($3).

A separate display shelf presents their current line-up cakes (a total of 10 currently) such as Strawberry Swissroll ($7.50), Yuzu Cheesecake ($7.50), Mango Passionfruit ($7), Orh Nee ($7) and Luna ($8), and a Hazelnut Caramel Mousse named after their shop ($8).

Tempting, tempting.

A 30-seater space is available next door, decked in gold finishing which eludes a sense of elegance.

As a matchaholic, the Matcha White Chocolate ($7.50) stood out among all other cakes with its intense shade of green. It did not disappoint.

Coming with alternating layers of matcha chiffon sponge and matcha white chocolate ganache, the texture was moist and not too dense.

The top layer was coated with droplets of matcha white chocolate cream generously sprinkled with matcha powder to give provide a more pronounced vegetal notes – though I can imagine not all would appreciate that.

One suggestion is to eat all the layers in one bite, as the chiffon cake is on the sweeter side, which can be balanced off by the bitterness from the matcha powder on the top layer.

The Orh Nee ($7) was my favourite of the two, made of pumpkin sponge layered with a mixture of yam and ginkgo paste.

The surprise came from the textural contrast in the yam and ginkgo paste, a mixture of smooth and velvety puree and bite-sized chunks of yam.

The Orh Nee is then topped with whipped cream frosting and dollops of yam cream with a touch of desiccated coconut that enhanced its sweetness.

The overall combination is well-balanced without overly sweet, yet packed with different textures.

Unlike the Chinese-style Orh Nee that we are familiar with, shallot oil or lard is not used in this version.

#Healthy but not really heathy because desserts do have proportionally high amount of calories.

To complement the pastries, espresso-based drinks such as Long Black ($5), White ($5.50), Mocha ($6.50) and flavoured lattes: Roasted Almond/ Hazelnut/ Caramel are available in both hot and iced versions.

A custom blend from a local roastery is used (no further information is revealed) and single shot is used for each cup of coffee.

Unfortunately, my cup of Flat White ($5.50) was lacking in terms of caffeine kick and was a tad diluted, overpowered by the sweetness from the milk.

Perhaps a double shot or ristretto shot is required to increase the flavours of the cup of coffee.

For non-coffee drinkers, interesting options such as Lemongrass ($5.50), Aged Ginger ($5.50), Osmanthus Oolong ($5.50) are available.

From their extensive line-up of small, dainty and pretty pastries without busting their daily calories intake to the elegant gold finishing in their furnitures, LUNA will be a popular afternoon cake spot for the office crowd in the vicinity.

Something to have after a meal at Amoy Street Food Centre, maybe.
