Fans of the defunct-Non Entree Desserts will be thrilled to know that one of their former chef-owner Francis Wong, has opened a new dessert concept store Sweet Thoughts by M.O.D at JForte Sportainment Centre in Kovan.

Sweet Thoughts by M.O.D has partnered with their neighbour Tie Fun Wan to cater to island-wide deliveries on Oddle: https://tiefunwan.oddle.me (Island-wide delivery at $8, min purchase $50, 11.30am – 9pm).

For direct orders, they can be reached at +65 9738 6648.

Delivery will be free for orders worth $40 and above whereas a $3 delivery fee applies for orders below $40 for residents at Hougang and Kovan areas.

Known for pushing his boundary and creating visually captivating edible-art desserts, an extensive menu of 15 hot and cold desserts is created by Chef Francis to interpret “tong shui” (糖水).

As a 90s kid who grew up with flavours like Kaya, Taro, Black Sesame and Mao Shan Wang Durian, the menu is a combination of his childhood memories and modern, refined pastry-making techniques.

Housed within the same compound as Tie Fun Wan in a retro setting that reflects the 1960s, the menu is divided into both Hot and Cold desserts, consisting of Paste ($4 – $4.90), Steamed Pudding ($5.50) or Shaved Ice ($6.90 – $9.90) respectively.

4 different flavours of Paste are available: Black Sesame ($4), Peanut ($4), Pulut Hitam ($4) and Yam ($4.90), all topped with Coconut Crisp and a fluffy layer of Ginger Pandan Cloud.

Digging into Black Sesame Paste ($4), the rich, nutty roasted black sesame has a smooth and creamy texture which is both familiar and homely.

The ingenious addition of the Ginger Pandan Cloud adds a tinge of sweetness and fluffiness to the combination, whereas the coconut crips add more chewiness to the entire bowl of liquid.

Apart from the paste on the Hot dessert menu, the Steamed Pudding comes in 4 different flavours, Papaya, Coconut, Kaya, Matcha, all priced at $5.50.

I ordered the Steamed Kaya Pudding ($5.50) which is a deconstructed form of our local traditional dessert of Kaya and Toast.

The Steamed Pudding is freshly prepared daily, before adding the Gula Melaka Bubbles and Pandan Sago and finishing it by torching the layer of black sugar to give it a crispy and crunchy caramelised texture.

The homemade Toasted Bread was the highlight, with a golden brown crispy texture and a buttery fragrance.

There are 2 ways of eating it, simply to take one mouthful of the toast and Kaya pudding each or dipping the toast into the kaya pudding just like a normal kaya jam.

In Singapore’s climate, the Shaved Ice is usually a popular choice and comes in 7 different flavours such as Hojicha ($6.90), Peanut ($6.90), Mango Sago Pomelo ($7.50), Black Sesame ($6.90), Taro ($6.90), Kaya Pandan ($6.90) and Mao Shan Wang Durian ($9.90).

The Hojicha Shaved Ice ($6.90) is my favourite, with fresh Hojicha tea leaves (instead of the powder) in the soft and fluffy shaved ice and is extremely aromatic and oishii.

The toppings are definitely worth a mention, with Azuki red beans, Konjac jelly and soya powdered muah Chee that is so soft and chewy.

As a fan of Orh Nee, the Taro Shaved Ice ($6.90) topped with Mini Taro cubes, Ginko nuts, Konjac Jelly, coconut and a coconut cheese milk cap fell short of expectation.

Using both real taro and artificial taro powder in their shaved ice, the taste of the latter was unfortunately more distinctive and overwhelming.

For additional toppings, homemade Tang Yuans (3pcs for $2.50) that come in Green Tea, Caramel and Peanut Rocher are available for the extra chewiness.
