Chug Chug at Tanjong Pagar is known to offer diners a selection of Chinese-Western fusion foods in a homely and lively atmosphere.
If you have been there before, you may find its boss quite familiar, especially if you are a fan of local Youtube channels.
Co-owner and influencer Xinde Yap who is frequently seen in Dee Kosh’s Youtube videos, is known for its good looks and shy boyish charm. (He is about to become a father in a about a month’s time. Congrats, Xinde!)
But he is not just a pretty face.
He has actually picked up cooking skills from this parents who own a couple of zi char outlets around Singapore, including Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok North Ave 2.
You can sometimes spot boss in the kitchen cooking up a fare, and find some zi char-inspired dishes appearing on its menu.
Discover their selection of signature dishes like Fiery Mala Pasta ($18), made with spaghetti and Szechuan mala spices, mushrooms, baby corn, crab stick and pork; Scallop Mentaiko Pasta ($20) with USA scallops.
The best-selling dish at Chug Chug is King Prawn Chug’s Tom Yum Pasta ($20), prepared with linguine in a tom yum cream sauce with XL King prawns, squid, and fried Sakura shrimps.
Xinde revealed that this is the one dish that stayed on the menu since the opening days of Chug Chug, and has continually revised the recipe based on customer’s feedback.
What you get know is a version 2.0, in which the balance of rich-creaminess and the tanginess-slight-spiciness is managed just right.
Plus, this was a rather saucy version so the pasta didn’t clump up even when left there for a while.
If you are a fan of burgers, opt for the filling Chug’s Wasabi Prime Beef Burger ($18.90) with USA prime beef patty.
The crowd-favourite is the Chug’s Buttermilk Chicken Burger ($18) in a brioche bun cradling a fried buttermilk chicken thigh, dressed with pepper jack sweet coleslaw and curry cream aioli.
Enjoy with accompanying crispy fries.
Remember I talked about zi char?
The latest addition is Chug’s Style Sambal Stingray ($18), featuring their in-house sambal and served with fried onion fritters.
I was initially sceptical at how it would taste since it was not grilled, but the meat turned out to be wonderfully tender matched with a shiok sambal chilli sauce. The addictive fritter make this a suitable bistro food to go with some drinks.
The Paya Lebar Quarter PLQ3 outlet offerings more Korean-influenced menu, with offerings of Bibmbap ($18), Kimchi Ramyeon ($16), Army Stew aka Budae Jiggar ($39), Bean Paste Stew ($16), Ginseng Chicken Stew ($16) to Kmichi Buttermilk Chicken Burger.
