Ban Leon Wah Hoe has many specialties to indulge in. Known as one of the best zi char place in Upper Thomson, it is usually filled with loyal customers during the weekends.

Founded in 1986 by a Mr Teh Chor Joo, this started as a economic rice stall for several years before taking the form of a zi char eatery.

There used to be a “Ban Leong” supermarket right at this location, and therefore the name.

Some of their specialties include Chili Crabs, Steamed Pomfret, Fried Lala, Shrimp Roll, You Cha Kway, Otah Roll, Baby Squid, Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat, Yam Pie, to Sambal Cuttlefish.

They are strong in their seafood dishes because the owner-chef also runs a seafood stall at Senoko Fishery Port.

If you are keen in their noodle and rice dishes, offerings include Birthday Noodles, Mee Goreng, Moonlight Kway Teow, Bee Tai Mak to Salted Fish Fried Rice.

For those ordering takeaways, you may have to wait for some time to get your order. (This is especially when some of its chefs are Malaysian and is facing lockdown back home.)

However, fans say that the delectable and delicious dishes they serve are definitely worth the wait. It could be an hour or more, so would be better to call and pick-up.

Nothing can beat the scrumptious and crunchy Har Cheong Gai, known to be one of the best in Singapore.

Before the Prawn Paste Chicken dish arrived, the ‘aroma’ would already make you salivate, especially if you are for this particular fragrance.

I specially loved how delicious the marination was, and also got a little tip from the chef to use shrimp sauce from the jar containing the ‘dragon head’, which is made in a shrimp sauce factory in Hong Kong.

While I have yet to try its breath of dishes, I was quite impressed with its Sambal Kang Kong, a ‘staple’ dish I would often order at zi char restaurants.

Good wok-hei, crunchy vegetables that is cooked just right (not too soft), and sambal base that packed the right kick.
