This is indeed sad news for foodies who love their gorgeous cakes and desserts, as the patisserie has been known for its innovation and creativity in presentation and style.

Antoinette has been around for 9 years, and one of the reasons for its closure is due to the increasing high levy fee (to be paid to URA) for the use of the Penhas Road shophouse unit for commercial purposes.

Perhaps you may not know that Chef Pang was the pastry chef behind the now-defunct Canele during the early 2000s, and the store was particularly known for its colourful macarons then.

He previously won the coveted Pastry Chef of the Year title in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 installments of the World Gourmet Summit and is also the youngest to receive this award 3 times.

In 2011, he was inducted to the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence Hall of Fame for Pastry Chef of the Year.

I fondly remember his Nasi Lemak Burger, of a ‘burger bun’ of Japanese rice cooked with fresh pandan juice, sandwiched with XXXL Chicken, homemade mackeral and prawn otah, luncheon meat, egg and special dried shrimp chilli which reminded me of my grandma’s hae bee hiam.

There was also the Hakka Gnocchi or “Suan Pan Zi”, with ‘abacus seeds’ made comprising of different flavours – beetroot, sweet potato, purple sweet potato and yam.

On another note, Chef Pang’s other concept “Pang’s Hakka Delicacies 小彭客家菜” is likely to continue at another venue at Xin Tekka as a noodle stall concept.

If you are going for one last go at their cakes, one of its most gorgeous tart on a almond crumble base is the violet-coloured Charlotte IV, included with cassis strawberry jelly, strawberry crémeux, and finger sponge.

Not forgetting about Antoinette’s Mont Blanc with almond tart base topped with, vanilla crème chantilly, marron glacés, and smooth chestnut cream.

Sad…
