Qbab – Middle Eastern Kebabs With Modern Sauces

What I like about Singapore is that you can get almost anything imaginable, from various cultures, and that every meal can be so different if you choose to. At the basement of Raffles City is Qbab , selling Middle Eastern Shawarma with modern sauces.

Qbab is taken from the word ‘kebab’, and the owners hope that Singaporeans would “Q for their Qbab”.

Their handcrafted kebabs are a combination of traditional meat recipes, paired with modern bespoke sauces.

There are two ways you can make your orders. The easier way may be to get the ready creation such as The Mustard Qbab ($10.50), The Picked Qbab ($9.90) or Yuzu Qbab ($9.90) with a Japanese lemon pepper sauce added with wasabi.

The other option is to create your own, with carbs of original, tomato and spinach wraps or Arabic rice, and meats of chicken or lamb skewered on the revolving vertical rotisserie spits.

The honest truth is a kebab wrap like this is not my immediate lunch choice. I can almost fall back to habitual habits like getting a boring sandwich, burger or sub. But my Qbab turned out to be pretty good.

A Smokey Qbab ($10.50) turned out to be generously filling for a guy of my size, and my favourite parts are the vinegar and honey glazed chicken – flavoursome, warm and mildly juicy; and the combination of ingredients of veggies, cheese with BBQ and ginger aioli.

Every bite had some crunch of the cabbage, some overflowing of sauce, and an occasional meat slice to savour. Yes, it can be quite a mess.

The side dish to order is the Arabic Season Fries ($3.00). I can’t tell why or how it is ‘arabic’ because the seasoning was not strong, but hot piping crisp fries are always a safe bet.

Qbab’s modern kebabs were hearty and more delicious than expected. Though I wished it was about $2 off its present price. It probably won’t be your everyday food, but an occasional meal can be quite satisfying.
