[Taipei, Taiwan] Taipei’s popular mango shaved ice store Ice Monster which used to be at Yong Kang Street, had a family dispute good enough to make it to the prime time drama slot.
The store used to attract lines of customers to queue for the coveted mango dessert. After an ugly divorce where the wife accused the husband for flirting with female customers, the 15-year old shop ended its sweet journey.

Subsequently it was replaced by another similar shop Yong Kang 15 (whom according to my cab driver was opened by the husband), which closed because it unfortunately just wasn’t as good.
Today, Smoothie House 永康街思慕昔 takes over its original premises. For those who wonder, a new Ice Monster has opened at No. 297, Sec. 4, Zhongxiao East Road.

Smoothie House is doing so well that it opened another shop just a short walk away. Both commanded at least 20-30 minute wait during a weekend evening.
Its most popular items include the Super Fruits Mix Mango Snowflake Iced with Sorbet (190 NT, SGD$7.90) and Super Mango Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta (180 NT, $7.50).

The snow ice is very fluffy like cotton snow, smoothly disintegrating in the mouth faster than cotton candy. Fruits of mango, strawberry and kiwi were fresh, sweet and slightly sour. It is a portion good for sharing between 2-4.
While I cannot really fault on its texture, I cannot help but feel that the old Ice Monster was better – the taste was almost life-changing and made me want to return to Taipei again. Ice Monster wasn’t as sweet and had a specially-made condensed milk which made all that difference.
As that said, Smoothie House 思慕昔 is still a good reason to come to Yong Kang Street for.
