Emi’s Waffle and Gelato – NEW Gelato Cafe At Tampines Opens Till 2AM During Weekends

Tampines might be the next hipster place for ice cream shops to open, shortly after the opening of Haute And Cauld, Hay Gelato and Scoop of Joy all in Bedok.

Emi’s Waffle and Gelato is the newest entrant in Tampines West, and it opens till midnight daily except on Fridays and Saturdays where it opens till 2am.

It has become a trend for ice cream shops to open till late, and this is definitely another hipster supper spot with its bright neon lights and a dark interior.

More of a takeaway place with only 8 seats indoors, the menu comprised of Gelato (Single $4.50, Double $8, Triple $11.50), Supreme flavours (+$0.50), Homemade Waffle ($5), Cone (+$1), Cakes ($6), Coffee (Black $3.50, White $4), Hot Tea ($5.50).

18 gelato flavours are available on display, with Premium flavours (Single $4.50, Double $8, Triple $11.50) such as Salted Caramel, Golden Vanilla Pod, Cookie & Cream and Matcha Green Tea.

The remaining flavours are all Supreme flavours (+$0.50 per scoop) such as Cinnamon Chocolate Fudge, Yubari Rock Melon, Black Forest Cherry, Blueberry Yogurt, Black Sesame, Double Espresso, Mont Blanc, After Eight, New York Cheesecake, Mao Shan Wang and Lychee Lime.

I ordered the Triple Scoops Gelato (2 Supreme + 1 Premium $12.50) with Waffle ($5) and was charged $19.50 instead of $17.50 as the staff calculated the price based on 3 individual gelato scoops.

(So please do check your receipt carefully to avoid the mistake I made.)

My favourite was the Matcha Green Tea with a smooth and non-icy texture, fragrant aroma with slight bitterness in the aftertaste that matchaholic will enjoy.

The Black Sesame was as delightful, with detectable nutty and earthly flavours.

Perhaps they can tone down the sweetness level by around 10-20% to bring out the aroma of black sesame.

Also, some sesame seeds can be incorporated for the added crunch and texture on top of its creaminess.

Unfortunately, the chestnut flavour wasn’t as pronounced as I imagined.

Being on the milky side that tasted similar to milk gelato, it lacked the earthy chestnut flavour (similar to what you would get in a Mont Blanc).

The Homemade Waffle ($5) was slightly disappointing, being on the thicker cut with a crispy golden-brown exterior with a dense and dry interior.

The owner explained that I should be having the waffle with the gelato and not have it on its own, but that didn’t solve the problem.

Unlike buttermilk waffles, the waffle batter lacked a certain fragrance which made it slightly on the dull side.

On top of Waffle and Gelato, Cakes ($6) such as Rainbow, Red Velvet, Pistachio Chocolate, Apple Crumble, Oreo Cheesecake and Tiramisu are available where their Coffee (Black $3.50, White $4) uses a single origin from Sumatra.

Emi’s Waffle and Gelato has the potential to be a perfect place for supper spot since they open till later and do have some interesting and good gelatos, and tweaking their waffle recipe to make it more appetising.
