Honestly, I didn’t quite plan to head down Main Street Commissary – a new café at Rowell Road in the heart of Little India, so I went with a totally open mind.
It was until inside when I realised it was opened by a creative agency “PROTOCOL”, and the offices are situated upstairs.
People may have certain expectations when you learnt that a café is opened by creative people. Like you expect some quirkiness, something thematic, or just out-of-the-box.
Main Street Commissary is pretty much a no-frills, non-pretentious space.
The venture is a collaboration between the creative agency and Melbourne-inspired eatery Bearded Bella – the home of 2016 National Barista Champion Regina Tay.
Bearded Bella was on board as a consultant to design the coffee menu and train the baristas.
There are interestingly four big tables on the inside, contrasted with other coffee places who may want to pack more chairs (and therefore people) in.
The space also tends to get on the echoy side, so be careful of speaking too loud unless you want everyone to hear what you b*** about.
The menu is still in the soft-launch phase, and the café intends to introduce three sandwiches of Croissant with Truffle Egg Mayonnaise, Bacon & Mushroom Sandwich, and Ham and Cheese Sandwich.
The available cakes included Ondeh Ondeh, Lychee Rose, Salted Caramel… the usual stuff from a familiar supplier.
Coffee includes Latte ($4.50), Magik ($5.00), Mocha ($5), Piccolo ($4), Long Black ($4.50) with Iced versions at $6.
The coffee machine at Main Street Commissary is the state-of-the-art VA388 Black Eagle which is used in coffee competitions globally.
Main Street Commissary will be serving sandwiches, pastries, cakes, with a salad bar arriving in February. Perhaps things will get more exciting then.
