The Assembly Ground café is an extension of The Assembly Store, a multi-label store which curates international fashion and lifestyle brands. The new café is not to be confused with the popular Assembly Coffee at Evans Lodge.
I was personally curious at the name “The Assembly”, which I found out came from the verse from Genesis 28:3 “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you so that you become an assembly of peoples.”
Co-owner Nelson Yap who had previously worked and managed a cafe in Melbourne, revealed that he had to come back to Singapore to take care of his ailing father and pay back family debts.
He was thrown in business and started Benjamin Baker (named after the ‘Benjamin’ generation in the bible) with faith, and the store became a success which paid off his debts.
Subsequently, the 64-seater Assembly Ground is established as a gathering place for friends and loved ones to share stories over a cup of good coffee and food with warm ambience.
There are two types of brews served here, the 22 Martin blend by Common Man Coffee Roasters which has a more chocolate-y aroma and is heavy bodied, and the 4 Chairs blend by Nylon Coffee, which is which is slightly acidic with fruity tones, medium bodied and a clean finish.
The server usually selects the choice of coffee depending on what food is ordered, but customers are free to choose which beans they prefer.
Appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, and brunch sets and be found on its menu, with the Assembly Brunch ($19.50), Beef Chilli Fettuccine ($16.00) Eggs Zoey ($17.00) – poached eggs, smoked salmon with hollandaise and herbs on crumpet being the recommend items.
I liked the Assembly Brunch, a hearty combination of scrambled eggs, salmon (or ham), wiener sausage, sautéed mushroom, potato gratin, cherry tomatoes and toast served on a wooden platter, with generous portions that I think two can shared.
The sausage was fat and juicy, eggs creamy enough, and the only let-down was the flimsy toast.
My friend had the Moroccan Baked Eggs ($15.00) which was stewed in tomatoes and pepper sauce, and said it was “very yummy” though I thought personally that the eggs were slightly undercooked and watery. (Another review I read said it was overcooked through.)
It was a wonderful touch, that their iced milk drinks come with ice cream. And my scoop stayed quite un-melted despite being in the Iced Green Tea Latte ($6.50) for a good duration of the meal.
What I appreciate about The Assembly Ground is its very open space – you don’t feel that claustrophobic here, the design is industrial yet homely, service is sincere and warm.
There are some cafes which I would visit once for its novelty and that is it, but I told myself The Assembly Ground is somewhere I would return to again.
