Café hopping is the buzz word in Singapore’s food culture, with many hipsters during weekends scouting the latest best new cafes in town. Look no further, because here’s an entire recent list!
It was not too long ago I compiled 20 New Cafes in Singapore, and here’s more, some so new you probably haven’t heard about them, some a few months old but went under radar.
The good news for city dwellers, many are in the CBD, Chinatown and city central area. More are opening up in Biopolis, Expo and near the housing estates. Wherever they are, we are starting to see more distinct personalities, from the retro Tian Kee & Co, hip Aussie The Lokal and lifestyle café The Assembly Ground getting more attention.

The Lokal

The Lokal is about wholesome Western style comfort food made from scratch using fresh ingredients, served up in a friendly chilled out atmosphere. Their coffee uses Sarnies coffee beans, satisfying caffeine cravings using a custom built Slayer espresso machine. Roast Beef on Rye ($17) was excellent. (Read: The Lokal at Neil Road)

Bread & Hearth

Bread & Hearth is helmed by a chef with more than a decade of experience in artisan baking. Handcrafted artisan bread is their bakery café’s signature style, where every bread and pastry is baked using traditional European methods. Try their Le Croissant ($2.80), Brioche ($2.80) and Chocolat Blanc ($2.80).

Farm to Table

Farm to Table Café is a pop-up café at the Duxton Hotel, located within a historic 19th century heritage site. It is only open till the end of this year, after which the entire hotel will undergo a major renovation. Coffee starts from $3.50 for an espresso, $5 for a Cappuccino, $5.50 for a Latte and is made from Nylon’s Four Chairs blend. Recommended is the Farmer’s Burger, a juicy grass-fed beef patty topped with bacon relish, tomato and cheddar, sandwiched in brioche buns ($18).

Three Cups Coffee Co.

Helmed by the team behind the former espressoLAB, Three Cups is a new café situated at the revamped One Raffles Place Level 4. They offer three types of coffee – an espresso Blend, Single Origin for espresso and Single Origin for pourovers. Three Cup’s specialty includes sandwiches and wraps; with the most popular types being the Three’s A Company ($9.50), Reuben Rosemary Beef ($9.50) and Thyme Mushroom Cheese Wrap ($7.80). JAB Brewers

More like a takeaway kiosk at the basement of the revamped One Raffles Place, there are still some seats for you to enjoy their coffee – beans sourced from Toby’s Estate. The shop’s name is playfully inspired by a doctor friend, for CBD dwellers who need their jab of caffeine.

Coffeemin

Coffemin is a café different from the rest. The only thing you pay for it the time, and you can choose to work, read a book, play games, drink and eat as much as you want. The first hour is charged at S$6, and each subsequent 10 minutes block at S$1. Daily pricing is capped at S$30 regardless of the time you spend in a day.

Fish Tales Café

The Assembly Ground café is an extension of The Assembly Store, a multi-label store which curates international fashion and lifestyle brands at Cathay. Appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, and brunch sets and be found on its menu, with the Assembly Brunch ($19.50), Beef Chilli Fettuccine ($16.00) Eggs Zoey ($17.00) being the recommended items. PS.Cafe Petit has taken over the space left empty by Baker & Cook at Martin Road, and the breakfast menu looks promising – Organic Eggs on Toast, Asian Scramble on Toast, and a series of baked sweet and savoury items for takeaways such as Butter Croissants, Sticky Cinnamon Bun and Sausage & Caramelised Onion Bunwich.

Dolce Tokyo

Dolce Tokyo’s 2nd branch apart from 313@Somerset, they are known for their Japanese cakes and desserts such as the Dessert Bento ($18.90) where you can mix and match various desserts of panna cotta, gelato and cake of the day. They also serve Japanese inspired dishes, such as Omu Curry Rice which has fried rice wrapped in a gooey bright yellow egg, served with pork belly skewer.

Tian Kee & Co

Tian Kee & Co. was a 54 years old provision shop, situated in one of Singapore’s oldest estate Dakota Crescent, and has now been converted to a café with a nostalgic touch. For cake lovers, go for their Japanese Cupcake ($3.50), a soft and light chiffon cake where the spoon can go easily through, and a Yuan Yang Cheesecake ($6.50) made with both espresso and Hong Kong-styled milk tea. Fart Tartz

Fart Tartz may sound mildly offensive. Their specialties are hand-made tart desserts and tarts, and therefore the name because Fart Tartz is the direct translation of ‘Huat Tat’. Uh-huh. All desserts are of no-bake concept, and desserts, salads and pastas are all contained in jars.
Threefold Café

The Pelotan

Noir Art Speciality Coffee

A hole-in-the wall café which actually roasts their own beans, priding themselves in their latte, signature cold brew and hand brew coffee. Try their Dark Chocolate drink, made by melting 72% Belgian chocolate chips with hot milk. Their cheesecakes are imported from Hong Kong, and are available in limited quantities.

Ply Baked Goods

Ply Baked Goods is nestled amidst the serene neighbourhood off Soo Chow Walk (near Thomson Plaza) and was started in July 2012 as a bakery selling whole cakes and pastries for takeaway & delivery. It has recently converted part of its space to a 16-seat cafe, pending licensing approval, in response to popular demand for its whole cakes to be served in slices. Ply’s Rainbow Cake with Chocolate Crunchies is uniquely rose-flavoured, moist & sprinkled with crunchy chocolate pearls amidst the light layers.

Whoopie Love

Whoopie Love is a small bake house which specializes in artisanal whoopie pies ($3.50 and $3.20 for 4 pcs and above). A whoopie pie consists of two cake-like cookies, with creamy fillings sandwiched between them. Their whoopie pies are handcrafted daily, offering 5 daily flavours (strawberry, chocolate chocolate, cookies and cream, hazelnut chocolate and red velvet) and a weekly rotating flavour. They also sell gourmet coffee and tea.
Niche Boulangerie

Burpz Cafe & Bakery

Burpz Café & Bakery is a cosy, affordable and unpretentious eatery nestled in a tranquil part of Ang Mo Kio, surrounded by the private estate of Upper Thomson and Lentor Avenue. They also bake their own gourmet breads to accompany its mains. Recommended dish is the Smoked Salmon Croissant, served with smoked salmon, eggs with a side of fresh garden salad. ($10).

The Tastemaker Store

The Tastemaker Store located at Havelock Road feels different from the other cafes in terms of vibes, very laid back. Food served is uncomplicated with a local twist, as they try to experiment with flavours and refine recipes we are already familiar with. I was recommended to try their Lemon Curd with Clotted Cream spread across hot muffin buns ($3.00) and Homemade Yam Cake with chill ($3.80). (Read: The Tastemaker Store at Havelock Road)

Charlyn’s Milk Bar

Charlyn’s Milk Bar is owned by the people behind Palate Sensations Cooking School and serves typical Italian coffee, food and pastries found in a typical Italian deli. Everything including their pastries and breads are made in house on a daily basis. Signatures are the Focaccias ($4.50 each) and Paninis ($8 each) with various fillings.

On The Table is by the team behind the popular Lola’s Café at Kovan. The team loved the idea of a space like a family’s backyard that is big and cosy at the same time. Their signature item is The Ultimate Croissant ($13) – a buttery flaky warm croissant stuffed with melted cheese, honey glazed bacon, ham and silky scrambled eggs served with a side of refreshing salad. Coffee is brewed with beans from Jewel Café and Dutch Colony.

Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee

Not exactly a café, but I thought I should include this in. Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee specialises in retailing of freshly roasted specialty coffee and raw coffee beans for home roasters. It is said to carry the heritage and legacy of Mr Tan Tiong Hoe, who has over 50 years of experience for coffee and coffee roasting. They offer roast on demand (Wild Kopi Luwak, Hawaii Kona Greenwell Farms, Wallenford Blue Mountain), freshly roasted coffee beans ($12-$19.50 a bag of 250g) and signature v60 hand-brew with more than 20 types of single origins (on a tipping basis).
Something and Something (*secret)
Usually opened Saturday 9am-4pm (But you can never be too sure)
“Many will seek but not all shall find.” And finally… This weekend only café is supposed to be a secret. (I won’t review the address.) The backyard of an office is turned into a café, and you have to enter via the back by knocking on the door. Limited seats, limited opening times, and limited bakes. I guess this is what true hipsters can really appreciate.
The last I heard, 2 more are opening up: Old Hen at Rangoon Road and Bondalicious at Biopolis in July. Any more very new cafes that was left out?
