Pick Me Up Café – Café At The Revamped East Coast Parkway Parkland Green

Growing up, a usual weekend activity could be going to East Coast Parkway for a class chalet, cycling, or hanging out at McDonalds. Now the more fashionable activity would be hipster café hopping.

This section of near my old-time favourite BBQ pit C21 of East Coast Parkway has been through a long-waited revamp with a snazzier name of Parkland Green, boasting 8 new F&B outlets, including Atmosphere Bistro Bar, Patro’s Sports Bar & Restaurant, St Marc Bakery & Bar, Pick Me Up Café and err Starbucks.

The area, with vast greenery and a beach within 5 minutes’ walk can be a joy to bring your family to during the weekends. But I wonder about its viability and business during weekday noons.

Pick Me Up Café has the usual café setting, less hipster, slanted towards more mass and family oriented.
Its differentiating factor is the sale of home-made yogurt gelato from Yogurt Story ($4.50 for single, $7.50 for double) and cold pressed juices ($8.90), other than all day breakfast, sandwiches and coffee.

So it’s a café with a slight, very slight health-spin.

Its peanut butter waffles “The Hippie” ($15.90) topped with fresh banana slices, crushed peanuts, salted caramel gelato and organic (yes, organic!) maple syrup, looks like one of the more promising waffle to try. At least the combination sounds interesting.

The gelato had a sticky smooth texture, pleasantly sweet with a tinge of saltiness without overpowering, and waffles more fluffy than crispy. Only drawback could be the crushed peanuts, which didn’t feel as crunchy as it should have been. Aka ‘lao hong’.

A bottle of 500ml cold-pressed juice would set you back by $8.90. I had the “Quench” made with watermelon, mint and coconut nectar. Personal preference, I wished the drink was more pulpy and minty.

Pick Me Up’s environment was pleasant with prompt service. But one wonders if the repertoire of its menu was enough to get customers to keep coming back, or requiring a round two next door.
