The Hangar – Melbourne Style Café Serves Good Coffee

There are some new cafes in Singapore that relies too much on gimmickry, or repeat the success formulas of others. I was impressed by The Hangar who went back to the basics – serving one good cup of coffee.

The Hangar at Arab Street reminded me of the cafes in Melbourne. True enough when I asked, the owner Pav came from down under. In the spirit of the Australian cafe, the source of its roast and ingredients is very important.

What is different about their coffee?

The team from The Hangar roast their own coffee, and source from the finest beans from farms in the region. Their roast is unique due to their method of slow roasting, approximately 25 to 30 minutes a roast, which churns out sweet and heavy bodied coffees.

I tried their Funky Marmalade from Congo, with a tangerine sweetness and toasty almond finish. The Hangar also featured pour-overs – V60s and Yamas.

Food can be described as rather grubby and varied. A look at their menu showed a variety such as Lotus Root Croquetes ($11), Homemade Granola with Greek Yogurt ($12), Norwegian Smoked Salmon ($17), Hangar’s Big Breakfast which included baked beans “not from a can” ($22), and Poached Egg with Avocado ($14).

The ingredients used were said to be sourced from local farms, and sauces such as mayonnaise, guacamole, pesto, salsa verde and mint chutney were made from scratch.

While I thought the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($13) could be more substantial in meat, the 12-hour slow cooked pork added with homemade guacamole tasted homely and rustic, which reminded me of what a mama in the farm would conjure up.

I was strongly recommended to try the Brownie ($5.50), a recipe the owner Pav used since college days. He claimed it was “a brownie like no other”, and would be sold out everytime he sold them in school food fairs back home.

True enough, it was different. Do not come expecting the same type of texture as the usual, but one which was extremely dense, rich and heavy. To be fair, I could imagine why it would be sold out. All that brownie needed was a scoop of ice cream to make it perfect.

Pav used to own a garage space in Melbourne where they held underground parties and played songs with his band, which they called “The Hang-ar” because that was where they hung out as friends. Thus, the name remained as tribute to those good times.

The Hangar is under-rated and I like it.
