Café Insadong – Korean Bingsu & Toast Near Chinatown

Not to be confused with Insadong Korea Town at Resorts World Sentosa, Café Insadong is a smaller outfit at South Bridge Road opposite Chinatown Food Street and a short walk from Maxwell Food Centre.

Café Insadong, started by a Singaporean and two Korean friends, combined a café concept with an art space and “Elegani”.

It is a smart idea to make use of the limited space (Rental, rental). The Korean art pieces adorned on the walls and available for sale, did provide more Korean vibes. So did the Elegani (it is a vanity table) beauty tables with card-box standees of a Korean model with perpetually stunned face.

We were really here for the food. The Patbingsu Ice was their signature, in flavours of Red Bean, Sweet Potato, Oreo, Mango, Green Tea ($8.50 – $9.00), and the local service staff were trained by a Korean dessert chef.

For its price, we were surprised by the generosity of the ingredients – a full scoop of ice cream, a glob of red bean on the side, some crunchy almond slices, sliced red dates, and as you dig in further…. Sweet sticky Korean chapssaltteok (rice cake).

I like. But my friend said Nunsongyee better. (Okay lah, Nunsongyee almost twice the price.)

The Bulgogi Beef Injeolmi Toast ($6.50) tasted quite ordinary though, the main surprise coming from the steamed Korean rice cake sandwiched within the two slices. Thought that the beef could do with more flavours, spotted some kimchi cabbage, but was way watered down.

That Bulgogi toast was the ONLY savoury item available in the café though. The rest were topped with ice cream, red bean, kaya butter (!), peanut butter or nutella.

I asked for savouries and the cashier offered me cup noodles. They were serious. We had no choice but to go round 2 somewhere else. Maybe some fries, sweet potato fries, chicken bites or wings would help?
