10 New Cafes In Singapore April 2015 – Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

For the first time in many months, we are finding difficulty in compiling a list of newly opened cafes for café hopping in Singapore. Because there aren’t that many to begin with in the first place, while some others were not too ready despite being opened.

Has cafes in Singapore finally reached in saturation point?

What we know is: café hoppers are becoming more discerning (another word = picky), and would take more to stimulate their interest. Eggs benedict and waffles alone would not be enough anymore.

Seems like the newer cafes are gearing towards the sweet stuff – hand-crafted gelato, fanciful cakes, churros and Korean bingsu.

10 New Cafes In Singapore April 2015 – Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

33 Sixty Eight
8 Jalan Batu #01-07 Singapore 431008
Opening Hours: 5pm – 10pm (Mon), 12pm – 10pm (Tues-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/33sixtyeight.singapore

The owner is a health-conscious yoga teacher, and therefore the gelato is below 9% fat and sorbet both diary and fat free. We liked the ‘delicious specials’ best, such as warm scones with gelato ($6.50), Double Puff Power ($6.00) where 2 scoops of gelato are sandwiched in choux pastry, and Bun Bun Bomb ($6.00) which paid homage to old-school buns. We preferred the gelato (coconut flavour was the best) better than the sorbets. Note of caution: taste before buying.

Banana Tree Singapore
26 Keong Saik Road Singapore 089133
Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Tues-Fri), 10am – 8pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/bananatreesg

South Korean café chain Banana Tree is popular for its banana theme decorations, yellow and white clean look, and pretty potted plant desserts. The signature desserts available included the Flower Paap ($6.50) – pudding in a flower pot, Oreo Bomb ($12), Pot BingSu ($12.50) and Som Som latte with candy floss toppings ($6.50). Some items were pretty to look at, but may fail to excite due to the long waiting time and over-expectations. (Read: Banana Tree Keong Siak Street)

Working Capitol Café
1 Keong Saik Road Singapore 089109
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 6:30pm
https://www.facebook.com/theworkingcapitol

The Working Capitol is a community workspace for co-sharing spaces, private offices and events space. The café downstairs offers a small selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes. Coffee is decent, though the slice of cake we had was on the dry side. Perks? Free Wifi.

+39 Gelato Bar
No. 29 Circular Road Singapore 049385
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Mon-Sat)
https://www.facebook.com/plus39gelato

+39 Gelato Bar located at Circular Road uses the state-of-the-art IdeaTre machine from Carpigiani, makes their gelato fresh every day, and incorporates high quality ingredients sourced both locally and from Italy. Flavours change regularly, and you may expect Pistachio, Milo, Raspberry, Mango, Chilli Chocolate, Pineapple Lemon Basil, Chocoginger, and so other inventive additions. Warning, the gelato does melt fast though. (Read: +39 Gelato Bar Circular Road)

And Why
31 Bali Lane Singapore 189867
Tel: +65 6291 0993
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon, Tues, Thurs), 9am – 9pm (Fri-Sun), Closed Wed
https://www.facebook.com/andwhyatbalilane

And Why is a play on the initials of ‘New York’, and the menu here is also inspired by the Big Apple City. The owners wanted to diversify the available styles of cuisines that are Halal in Singapore, thus the offerings of food such as Asparagusto & Pastrami ($18.90), Stripped-down Steak Sandwich ($19.90) and mocktails.

Baker’s Brew Studio
6 Jalan Tampang, Sembawang, Singapore 751468 (10-15 min walk from Sembawang MRT)
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/bakersbrewstudios

Baker’s Brew Studio is a baking studio-café is located at Sembawang along Jalan Tampang. There is no fixed menu and the items change every day depending on the bakers present. If you are inspired by the bakes, approach these fun- loving bakers as they do offer baking classes there. No coffee yet though. Akang Datang. (Read: Baker’s Brew Studio Sembawang)

Churros Factory
15 Cheong Chin Nam Road (Alongside Al Azhar)
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 5.00pm

Ah, a churros-based cafe. Popular items are three pieces churros with chocolate drizzle ($4.00) and Raspy Burger ($6.50). Coffee such as Nutella Latte ($4.50) and Nutella Cino ($4.50) are available. We liked the raspberry flavoured ones, but the wait (more than 30 minutes) was too long. They ought to change the ice cream brand – the ‘cheap taste’ spoilt the entire experience.

Cake Avenue Bistro
33 Lorong Kilat #01-01 Kilat Centre Singapore 598132
Opening Hours: 10am – 5pm (Mon), 10am – 10pm (Tues-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/CakeAvenueSG

Cake Avenue started as a home-owned business retailing online known for their 3D cakes, and have moved on to open café-concept bistro. Cakes we tried had an ‘old-school’ texture, and drinks could gear towards the sweet side.

The Betterfield
261 Waterloo Street #01-23 Singapore 180261
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tues-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/TheBetterField

Duck is in their flavour. The Betterfield is a relatively quiet café which seemed to fare better in their duck dishes, namely Pulled Duck Burger ($20) with charcoal buns and Duck Confit ($20). Chef had experience working in hotel and restaurant kitchens, and online reviews have been favourite. The better news, prices are nett.

Momo Café
47 Duxton Road Singapore 089511
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Mon-Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri-Sat)
https://www.facebook.com/momocafesg

Momo has Group Therapy as neighbours, with a darker-than-usual ‘mood’ ambience that we liked. We cannot say much about their food though – the lava cake didn’t flow and waffles were dry. We hope it is just opening jitters and they will iron things out.
