Walking past Blk 532 of Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, you may least expect to find a British-based Fish and Chips café, right next to an incense shop. Like where did that even come from?
Murphy’s Fish and Chips at Ang Mo Kio was actually first established in Hitchin United Kingdom at Queen Street, and claimed to be “award-winning”.
I have checked. The UK outlet were voted the “Best Chippy Chips” in Hertfordshire in the 2014 Choice Chip Awards run by the Potato Council in recognition of Chip Week 2014. For the record, 840 chip shops entered that competition and was voted by more than 60 thousand chip-loving Brits.
The signature Murphy’s Fish and Chips featured both normal batter ($S16) and special non-oily batter ($S17) versions, using Canadian arrowtooth fish characteristised by their flat white flesh with mild flavour.
Yes, we liked the Fish and Chips – light airy crisp with fresh sweet chunky meat. There was ample tartar sauce, and malt vinegar (so British) to drizzle on the thick cut chips.
The owners revealed that temperature control, along with the usage of solid palm oil helped get the crispness of the skin.
Finger food such as Crispy Wings ($10), Truffle Fries ($10), Chips ($7), and mains of Big Ben Breakfast ($15), Chicken Chop ($16), and Seafood Pasta ($17) were available.
As I made my way to the washroom, I noticed two bookshelves full of reads. Well, okay. Then I learnt that Murphy’s was hoping to promote reading habit through their book exchange corner in partnership with the National Library Board of Singapore. Thumbs up. A humble café with some though.
We agreed that the Fish and Chips was easily better than some of the mass market brands, but wondered if residents nearby would choose to pay 3 times the price over the hawker centres to have ‘Western food’ here.
