The question I keep getting: Where to find good and best caterers in Singapore? I am pretty sure you get some of those questions too, especially if you are the foodie in office.
Colleagues and friends would come out with the following criteria: Caterer must be cheap and good, must be Halal, wide selection, and meant for a smaller groups say for 8 -10.
Emphasis: Cheap, good, small group.

Select Catering and Stamford Catering has launched 20 new Mini Party Set varieties, of which 15 would be suitable for lunch or dinner, while the other 5 are specially crafted for tea time.
There is an increasing trend of catering targeted at smaller groups, meant for parties, birthdays, house-warming, weekend feasts or mini-corporate lunches.
That would mean bite-sized food such as sandwiches, chicken wings, curry puffs, cakes and the likes.

Each Mini Party Set is at an affordable rate at $95++, meant for small groups of 8 to 10 pax, and halal options are available.
I remember that catering used to be a once a year ‘event’ for my family, and would happen only when one of the relatives got married, or when the extended family planned of having a big Christmas gathering.
In recent years, it is a different story all together. Like when we need to get food for our mum’s birthday for our family of 8, then this Mini Party Set from Select and Stamford Catering would come in pretty handy.

We were also invited to have a kitchen tour of Select Catering (at Senoko Crescent!), and saw that food was prepared fresh with clear processes and division of labour.
The very experienced Chef Foon looked young and energetic (considering he has been with the group for 20 years) and shared that his greatest satisfaction came from developing new items and dishes, through long periods of R&D with his team. His mantra for catering business: We have to move along with the times.

Putting the food to the test…
What you see from the following was for an office meeting. There were 10 of us sharing this meal.
The popular Mini Party Sets recommended are the ‘Singapore style’ ones – Singa-Fare, Homely Finds, That’s So SG, and Taste of Home.
This “Singa-Fare” set contains 5 dishes such as Singapore Style Fried Bee Hoon, Signature Curry Chicken with Potatoes, Pacific Dory Fillet with Dried Fried Shrimps and Lemongrass, Lo Han Vegetables with Broccoli, and Chilled Almond Jelly with Longan Dessert.

The Mini Party Set came in an easy-to-carry food delivery bag, and food items were packed in microwavable disposable containers, with sets of disposable cutleries provided.
So unzip, unpack, microwave (optional) and done! Ta-dah.

Here’s our verdict on the food.
Being fans of beehoon (it’s like our ‘staple’ for catered meals) we liked the Singapore Style Fried Bee Hoon for its simple execution. Surprisingly, the beehoon wasn’t oily or clumpy – our usual peeve for takeaway carbs, and had generous servings of vegetables such as pak chye.
Everyone at the table liked the Signature Curry Chicken with Potatoes, for these very reasons – the gravy was coconuty yet not overly watery; a lot of gravy (more than enough to pour over the beehoon), and potatoes soft without turning into mush.
The curry also came in this long rectangular container, and I found that this less susceptible to spillage (especially important if you are in a pristine white office shirt.)

Personally, I liked the Pacific Dory Fillet with Deep Shrimps and Lemongrass best (deep fried food does work in my favour). Rather than the same old boring fried fish, this dish has that Peranakan meets Thai cuisine savour on its outer layer.

Lo Han Vegetables with Broccoli. Interestingly, we noticed that the ladies in the group (especially the petite sized ones) went for this first and praised the crunchy broccoli and bright-coloured carrots. I was kind of indifferent to this dish and thought maybe it needed more sauce.
We would appreciate some cool and cleansing dessert after a heavy meal, and this combination worked about just right. The usual desserts available for other sets would include Chilled Almond Jelly with Longan Dessert, Lychee & Pineapple with Crystal Konnyaku Jellies, and the ever-favourite Chilled Crystal Grass Jelly with Longan Dessert.

My office has been ordering from Stamford Catering (the halal catering arm) pretty regularly for the mini-seminars we conduct. I can almost quite safely say I tried like at least 50 over items on its menu over time.
I dare not say EVERYTHING yet because I know Stamford has an extensive menu, and keep adding new varieties.
Inevitably, there would be some hits and misses, but my personal recommendation would be the Seafood Mee Goreng, Spaghetti Aglio Olio, Golden Chicken with Lemon Sauce and Saikyo Miso Marinated Salmon Fillet (if you are looking at what to order).
