Bukit Timah Plaza welcomes another new addition shortly after Bing Go Jung opened a second outlet there.

Neighbours Rise and Grind Coffee Co, with an identical name to their distant relative in New York City, offers brunch items, some mains after noon and leisure coffee on the outside of the plaza.

Rise and Grind, derived from ‘Rise and Shine’ would mean to starting the daily ‘grind’ or work. ‘Grind’can also mean crushing coffee. BUT, there are also other definitions in the urban dictionary such as ‘rubbing’. Okay, let’s not go that way.

Breakfast is served from 9am till 3pm daily, offering the usual brunch fares of Egg Benedict ($12-$17), Croque Madame ($10), Avocado Toast ($12) and Shakshouka ($16) – lamb merguez sausage with tomato sauce.

The mains such as RGC Gold Standard Burger ($18), Spaghetti Aglio Olio ($12), Chilli Crab Pasta ($16) and Truffle Fries at an additional $1, are served only after 12pm. There were only four mains by the way.

Ocean’s Thirteen (Loved that movie by the way) came on a platter with varied colours like a coral reef within an ocean. The salmon was topped with 2 nicely poached eggs runny yolks and the brilliant use of beetroot yogurt gave it a refreshing taste.

We ordered this BECAUSE of we read YUZU hollandaise sauce. But the smoked salmon was salty and masked the unique yuzu hollandaise sauce. But still decent.

The café seemed to have a penchant for Hollywood movie titles. The Hangover Cure ($18) made up of bacon, mushroom, tomato, avocado, poached eggs and brioche toast boosted runny eggs and fresh delightful tomatoes.

The main we ordered – a Creamy Mentaiko Prawn Pasta ($16) which interestingly used angel hair pasta, turned dry stodgy rather quickly. Sorry but the dish reminded us of char bee hoon in a while.

Perhaps the dish needed lighter and more generous serving of cream sauce, since the name is supposed to be ‘creamy’

The drinks selection was rather comprehensive, with Coffee (house blend or single origin), Tea ($6) and Sparkling Juice ($5).

Serving a house blend of Colombia and Sumatran beans, the cup was creamy, acidic with a dark chocolate undertone.

On the other hand, the single origin of Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe and Konga beans was more floral and fruity.

There are many existing interesting cafes in the vicinity along Lorong Kilat such as Revelry, East Manhattan Bakery Cafe
and Udders Pancake.

Rise & Grind Coffee Co. serves decent brunch fare but will probably need additional X factor to attract the café hoppers, who could be already bored with the usual same-same offerings. I think we need to move beyond eggs ben already.
