Old blocks, modern café food. Jalan Bukit Ho Swee gets more hipster as nearby Tiong Bahru becomes saturated with cafes.
Cream & Custard chose to open at an inconspicuous Block 46 of the Beo Crescent estate. The contrast is obvious. We wonder how residents take to this.
Do you know there are already 5 cafes at Jalan Bt Ho Swee? Sin Lee Foods, Le Halo, The Tastemaker Store and Dessert Project (soon to come).
For the cafe hoppers, the bakery café may be somewhat inaccessible actually, a 15 minutes walk from the nearest Tiong Bahru MRT station.
Opened by sister and brother team Melissa and Wesley Hoe, Cream & Custard could cater to the residents and office workers nearby, providing an alternative dessert selection for the sweet-tooth.
After walking into Cream & Custard, we found ourselves adoring the small space and interior. Simple layout, white, clean, quite aptly named ‘cream’.
Our attention soon turned towards the pastries and cakes on display, colourful, rather petite in size, ‘Instagram-worthy’
The sweet bakes included Passionfruit Meringue, Praline Chocolate Crunch, Strawberry Shortcake, Triple Chocolate Devil, Tropical Delight and Tiramisu. Prices were between $5-$7 and not labelled when we visited.
The Triple Chocolate David ($6.80), so shiny that you could almost see your reflection, made with 75% Valrhona chocolate, Baileys chocolate and hazelnut praline. They are not stingy with including quality ingredients.
Taste-wise, the cake was similar to Les Délices’ Heavenly Chocolate, with a thicker and more viscous texture. Well, somewhat like a Ferrero Rocher cake.
Keep this for sharing. It was small in size, but could get ‘jelak’ aka overly rich for some.
Cakes seemed to be on the sweet side. Both the Passionfruit Merengue Tart and Tropical Delight ($6) were so. For the latter, the sponge cake base was puzzlingly tough, and didn’t go well with the smooth mousse-like texture.
The Earl Grey Chocolate Tart ($5.80) looked promising with the assortment of fresh berries. The tart base was firm with smooth chocolate ganache, but lacked that distinct earl grey savour.
On the whole, we liked the croissant with its light buttery fragrance though, and figured that the sweets would just need some fine-tuning here and there. Gambatte ne!
