Shake Shack – The Iconic Burger From New York

[New York] Being the ‘NYC-virgin’, the single one food recommendation that keeps popping out is Shake Shack burger, considered a MUST-HAVE in the Big Apple. This should be the hottest burger in the United States right now.

Shake Shack fans call this THE BEST burger in the world, and the fast food restaurant has become an institution of sorts to visit for foodies. It is now publicity listed.

Not too bad for this used-to-be humble hot dog cart which started in Madison Square Park.

The branch near Times Square is one of the most accessible. Queues are also long, routing out from a zig-zag line from within to out of the shop. Several aim this for supper after a Broadway musical since the outlet closes at midnight daily.

This can be a stressful situation for first-timers to New City City, but you will get a hang after a while. Queue, order, get a buzzer, wait for 15 minutes, pray for a miracle to get a table, if not eat while standing up with the other hand balancing a tray.

I got a SmokeShack Burger (USD$6.69 for single, USD$9.49 for double) which is “100% all-natural Angus beef. No hormones and no antibiotics ever… freshly ground.” All burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested.

It was awesooooome. Juicy, succulent, flavourful patties. The buttered bun was soft like a pillow. Oh the sauce. Like a converted fan, my tummy wondered about the hundreds of lousy dry burgers I ever had in my life.

In an attempt to look healthier, Shake Shack once introduced fresh, hand-cut, russet potato but customers preferred the crinkle cut. You can add cheese to your fries (USD$3.95) but I was watching for my calorie-intake. I know, what contradiction. I was eating a burger ‘worth’ 910 calories.

I was kind of indifferent to their Milk Shakes (USD$5.25) with flavours of Hand-spun Vanilla, Chocolate, Caramel, Black & White (get this, it’s a combination of chocolate and vanilla), Strawberry, Peanut Butter or Coffee Fair Shake.

Can imagine why people would like this though – the texture is milky and smooth, that you could sip without clumps (yeah, I get that in some milkshakes) and you won’t feel that it’s unnecessarily sweet.

Is this the best burger in NYC? I suspect there are better ones. This is after all, the land of burgers.
