[Sydney, Australia] Starbucks couldn’t survive in Australia, and this tells something. Australian cafes are some of the best in the world, because many three-wave cafes are that strong in their coffee-making skills.

Surry Hills is THE place to find some of Sydney’s best cafes, also a melting pot of restaurants, galleries and vibrant cultures. Marque, Toko and MoVida are all there, along with more than hundreds of food places including bars, cafes, delis, bakeries and specialty food restaurants. You just got to find them.

Here are 10 Best Cafes In Surry Hills.

Note: Central Station is the closest train station to Surry Hills and locations can be reached easily by foot or bus. These cafes would require anything between 10-25 minutes from the train station on foot. (Google Maps provided, yah?)

Single Origin Roasters
60 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010

Opening hours: 6:30am – 4:00pm (Mon-Fri), 7:30am – 3:00pm (Sat), Closed Sun

The epitome of good coffee is passion. Said to serve the best coffee on Surry Hills, thus the long queues for takeaways, especially during morning rush hours. Seats are limited. We sat on benches outside the café, literally a hole in the wall. Many cafes in Australia serve banana loaf, but Single Origin Roasters’s Banana Bread With Espresso Butter (AUD$5.50) had my friends buying those every single day we were there. Did I say every single day? (Single Origin Roasters)

Opening Hours: 7am-10am (Mon-Fri), 7:30am – 10pm (Sat-Sun), Lunch from 12pm, Dinner from 5pm

Owned by celebrity chef Bill Granger, famous for breakfast items such as the world famous scrambled eggs and ricotta hotcakes. The Full Aussie Plate (AUD$24.50) came with the signature scrambled organic eggs, sourdough toast, bacon, cumin roast tomato, miso mushrooms, pork and fennel sausage. The eggs were like fluffy soft (and milky) pieces of yellow clouds. (bills)

Bourke Street Bakery
633 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7am-6pm (Mon-Thurs), 7am-5pm (Sat-Sun)

Serves some of the best pain au chcolat and sweet cakes. Queue is expectedly long though during the weekends. There are few things I would describe as life-changing, and two items from the famed bakery would fit that bill – Ginger Brulée Tart (AUD$5.00) and Pork & Fennel Sausage Roll (AUD$4.50). (Bourke Street Bakery)

Bangbang Espresso Bar and Café
113 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Tel: +61 2 9281 0018
Opening Hours: Mon-Friday (Breakfast & Lunch) 8am-4pm; Sat (All day breakfast) 8am-3pm; Sun (All day breakfast) 9am-2pm

The name was inspired from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill song, “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” by Nancy Sinatra. Strong music influence here. As the owner is British, there are some of his favourite childhood dishes like Fish Finger Sarnie (AUD$14.50, SGD$16.90), which is breaded flathead fillets on sourdough with house made tartar sauce, and Classic Cheeseburger(AUD$15.90, SGD$18.55) made with wagyu minced meat. Or get an English Breakfast (AUD$19.50. SGD$22.75), a filling awesome plate of bacon, sausage, fried eggs and sourdough toast. (Bangbang Espresso Bar & Café)

Reuben Hills
61 Albion Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7am-4pm (Mon-Sat), 7:30am-4pm (Sun)

Café, coffee roaster and retailer with rustic cool ambience. The décor is edge – I like. Real hipsters visit this place. Menu includes culinary inspirations from Honduras and El Salvador. Try the Baked Eggs (AUD$17-18) – with jamon or chorizo and kale, ranchero and rye.

Brooklyn Hide
226 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 5:00pm (Mon-Fri), 8:30am – 3:00pm (Sat), Closed Sun

Bringing a little touch of New York to Australia, with daily fresh authentic bagels. The bagels, with varieties of sourdough rye, cinnamon and raisin, poppy seed or gluten free, are first boiled then baked. Those with fillings (AUD$10) are cleverly named after famous places in NYC. Try the Brooklyn Hide with braised pork shoulder or Manhattan with in-house cured lox and cream cheese.

Café Mint
579 Crown Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm (Tues-Fri), 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm (Sat), 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (Sun)

Cool menu bursting with North African and Middle Eastern flavours. An easy going environment for some Turkish bread (AUD$5), Kuneffeh (AUD$16.50) and Chackchouka Eggs (AUD$14.50). A 6 course Tasting Menu for 2 or more people go at AUD$60 per person.

The Sandwich Shop
44 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 3:30pm (Mon-Fri)

Lovely minimalist sandwich shop, with items packed with freshness and wholesomeness, such as the Original New York Reuben and Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich which won the Food Bloggers Choice Award. My favourite place at Surry Hills for fresh takeaway sandwiches.

Devon Cafe
76 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, NSW Australia 2010
Google Maps
Opening Hours: 7am – 4:30pm (Mon-Fri), 8am – 3:30pm (Sat-Sun)

Cafe with restaurant quality dining. The café is headed by Chef Zach Tan, who comes from Penang Malaysia famous for its street food. Thus, Devon Café’s menu includes influences from Asian cuisine with French cooking technique. You may be stoked by the Little Lost Bread (AUD$17) – brioche French toast, triple chocolate, caramalised banana, salted caramel ice cream and addition of … bacon if you wish.

Four Ate Five
485 Crown Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, Australia
Google Maps
Tel: +61 2 9698 6485

Time Out Sydney gave Four Ate Five a 5-star review. That’s rare. The menu looks healthy – think House Made Museli (AUD$12), Braised Kale (AUD$18), Free Range Eggs Toast (AUD$10) and signature The 485 (AUD$19), boiled eggs, hummous, marinated feta, red cabbage on seeded pretzel. The food turned out to be delicious as well. Note: The café can be very packed.

“Hello, Surry Hills!”
