A lesson to restaurant owners to update their website and Facebook. Mookata’s website indicates “There has been an increasing number of confusion regarding our restaurant’s location. We currently only have one outlet @ 103 East Coast Road” even though they have already opened 2 more branches – at Lorong Chencharu (Khatib) and Bugis Junction.
The one most obvious selling point of this Thai Mookata restaurant at Bugis Junction is… it has AIRCON. And the air-conditioning happens to be rather cool. Is that your wish granted?
Strange that my Thai friends say that they don’t usually eat Mookata, occasionally by the streets or at home. That means loads of sweating, and dining out in singlet, shorts and slippers.
Ladies in office attire can perhaps attempt Mookata for lunch because the restaurant has invested in a better exhaust system.
Indeed, I went out of the restaurant not smelling like barbecued pork, but I cannot quite guarantee that your long hair and Hermes handbag won’t smell.
For convenience, we ordered the Set for 2 ($34.90) which included a combination of marinated chicken (thigh), pork (collar), prawns, squid, suriyaki, streaky bacon, pork belly, fishball, meatball, crabsticks, otah fishcake, round cabbage, chinese cabbage, kang kong, xiao bai cai, corn, golden mushroom, eggs, tung hoon and tofu.
Reads like a lot, but in reality is not too much.
We found some better and more varied items (beyond the standard) such as Bacon Enoki Wrap ($9.50), Tom Yum Chicken ($8/$16), Tom Yum Pork Collar ($8.50/$17) and Pork Suriyaki ($8/$16).
Aroy mak, but paeng mak. Meaning delicious, but expensive.
We liked the Tom Yum marinated meats, more sweetish with a slight kick of spiciness, good enough on its own without additional sauces.
Flavours are generally family-safe, without being overly intense. Even the most spicy chilli dip, is mild in my opinion. (It’s me yah.)
The best part about having mookata is when the meat juices trickles down to the soup base at the bottom. Can be salty but satisfying!
What we liked: the meats, the aircon, the exhaust pipes, the comfortable environment (Not too sure about the multi-coloured Chiang Mai umbrellas and white coloured seats though. Will they be stained after some time?)
Cooking is via electric stoves, and people will always say charcoal cook better. You win some, you lose some.
