[Hong Kong] Matcha madness continues to rain on Hong Kong, as instagram and Open Snap feeds get flooded with desserts and cakes of GREEN. That was how I found out about Sinmei Tea 川善茶居.

Tell me how you could resist a Matcha Sizzling Brownie (HKD$78) with ice cream with matcha sauce poured over? on a hot iron plate? Seriously a dessert sensation, not overly sweet with a touch of tea-bitterness.

Although it is located less than 5 minutes away from Sheung Wan MTR, finding the inconspicuous (CS Tower) Building may need some navigation.
There would likely be a queue outside this café at the 5th storey (take the elevator up please).

Once you enter, you would be surprised at how eclectic this café is: Traditional Chinese dark wood furniture and potteries on one side, along with a mixture of Western style (flimsy) chairs. Yes, an East-meets-West café selling Japanese desserts.

Be careful not to sit on Mithu the resident cat, which couldn’t be bothered at the presence of us dining just NEXT to it. (Of course, there were some mei-mei who attempted to take a welfie with the cat – which didn’t want to keep its eyes open.)

Sinmei Tea does an fascinating repertoire of tea drinks, such as Matcha Mojito (matcha + lime + soda, non-alcoholic), Matcha Yin Yang (matcha + coffee), Matcha Snow White (matcha + milk + vanilla ice cream) and Iced Moroccan Mint Tea. That’s Tie Guan Yin tea with mint. All cold drinks were at HKD$50.
I liked the Matcha Yin Yang best, as surprisingly they got the balance quite spot-on.

Some of the other popular desserts include Watermelon Tea Lover (HKD$68) where you get watermelon and matcha cream in a cup, Matcha Cheese Cake (HKD$400 and Matcha Angel Cake (HK$40) – a green tea sponge cake with osmanthus.

Sinmei Tea is not your typical cafe. I liked that there is a blend of the traditional and new, East and West, a lazy photogenic cat, and all things matcha.
