Egg Drop 에그드랍 – Must Have Korean Egg Toast In Seoul, This Is The Real Deal

[Seoul] Egg Drop 에그드랍 is becoming one of the popular breakfast spots in South Korea. With its offering of egg sandwiches in different fillings, one would see this as a close competitor to Isaac Toast.

There are a couple of branches in Seoul itself, at Samcheong, Sinchon (Mapo), Mapo Station, and Mokdong, though not in the hundreds like the better-known Isaac Toast.

(Click PLAY for video highlights of Eggdrop 에그드랍.)

The funny thing is Singaporeans got a lot more familiar with Egg Drop, after a similar looking and sounding Egg Stop opened at Paya Lebar, and I could hear a few fellow Singaporean travellers at the same shop. (It’s the Singlish.)

The more convenient branch to get to is at Samcheong-dong, known for its Bukchon Hanok Village (also near Gyeongbokgung Palace) where it is beautifully surrounded by century-old traditional teahouses and tourists walking around in rented Hanbok.

There are a couple of seating spaces, compared to the Mapo branch which caters more to the nearby working crowd.

The egg sandwiches come in varieties called Mr Egg, Sweet Ham Cheese, Bacon Double Cheese, Teriyaki BBQ, and Avo Holic, priced affordably from 2,900 Won to 4,400 Won (SGD3.55 – SGD5.40).

There are also Tamago Sando (3,900 Won), Egg Cobb Salad (4,400 Won) and coffee drinks 2,400 Won – 2,900 Won) sold.

You order via a vending machine, but there are English instructions. Kind of. Get your cash or card ready before you hold up the queue behind.

The crowd favourite is the Avo Holic – perhaps because it is healthier; or the scrambled eggs filled Bacon Double Cheese or Sweet Ham Cheese.

After waiting for about 15 minutes, I was served with these toasts neatly wrapped in these well-packaged boxes, that made it more convenient to take-and-go.

Would you call this love at first bite?

It was really all about that thick buttery brioche toast, with crispy exterior and soft texture. The contrast made it really alluring.

The egg itself was creamy and fluffy – slightly steaming hot too, though there were times I felt it was quite messy to eat.

Similar to many other Korean toasts, there was this sweet cream and egg sauce that gave a honeyed-aftertaste that differentiated this from most other normal sandwiches.

If you would like a variety, the Teriyaki BBQ comes with an egg yolk on top of slices of sweet saucy beef.

I would understand why Egg Drop is getting some traction. Perhaps Isaac Toast suffers from some inconsistency due to too many branches, while this also comes across as a healthier and more ‘stylish’ option.

CAFE 연남동 239-20 – Korean Café Inspired By The Comic Fantasy World Of “W”, At Yeonnam-dong Seoul

[Seoul] This is one café that would make you feel like you stepped into a comic book, and to be more precise – a webtoon.

(Click PLAY for video highlights of CAFE 연남동 239-20)

Korean drama fans would be familiar with the TV hit “W – Two Worlds” by Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo, in which the characters enter a fantasy webtoon world.

This is also where the café got its inspiration from.

Called “CAFE 연남동 239-20” or “CAFE Yeonnam-dong 239-20”, it is simply named after its address.

Photos of its black and white interior have made their way across varied social media platforms such as Instagram, but it is hard to imagine that it is just a 20-seater, single-handledly managed by one person.

The lady that I met behind the counter is also the owner and barista. She apologised that there were no seats left when I visited, and recommended me to either wait or take-away.

So while you managed to see customers shooting all types of #OOTD and interior shots within the café, what you don’t see is that the small space is perpetually quite crowded and you got to be patient to wait for that right (empty) moment.

There are two sections of the café – the outside with garden-like, relaxing vibes; and the inside which is styled like a comic book (the design extends all the way till the washroom).

The menu is lean, with signature drinks such as the W Coffee (6,000 Won), W Salty Latte (6,000 Won), Vanilla Café Latte (5,000 Won), Choco Choco Latte (5,000 Won) and Green Tea Latte (5,000 Won).

That is between SGD6.10 (USD4.50) and SGD7.35 (USD5.40).

Even the drinks are served in cups designed to look like they are part of a drawing when photographed.

The W Coffee is inspired by the Einspänner Coffee – with two shots of espresso topped with cream.

Its foamy cream includes flavour of vanilla bean, with an aromatic-sweet flavour as you take sips.

With its modest yet one-of-a-kind aesthetics, people (or “influencers”) will make all their way there to have photos taken.

But let us not forget about the real charm of this place – no matter how small a space, it can be transformed with a brilliant idea.

Shanghai Michelin

[Shanghai] The Michelin Guide has just announced results for the city of Shanghai.

No major surprises. Ultraviolet conceived by Paul Pairet, the first restaurant in the world of its kind uniting food with multi-sensory technology, has retained its three stars.

Even though an immersive dining experience there would set you back by RMB4000 (SGD800, USD584) minimally, seats are still highly converted and reservations are typically full-full.

Previous year’s 3-star awardee T’ang Court, has lost a star and enters the “Two Stars” list.

Xin Rong Ji which specialises in Taizhou cuisine, is the highest new entry with Two Stars.

The other five new 1-star restaurants are Amazing Chinese Cuisine 菁禧荟, Il Ristorante – Niko Romito, Jade Mansion 苏浙总会, Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, and Moose 鹿园.

One In A Million Cafe 원인어밀리언 – Pretty In Pink Cafe Is A Hit Among Korean Youths, At Itaewon Seoul

$

[Seoul] Disclaimer: This is not MY kind of café in terms of aesthetics, but I can imagine why so many people would highly recommend it.

Highly instagrammable / insta-worthy, pretty in pink, beautiful and elegant, these are some of the words that were used to describe One In A Million café 원인어밀리언 at Hannam-dong at Itaewon-ro. (Traveller tip: Search for “Won In Eo Million” instead for Naver.)

To be fair, I do not think it is just a photogenic place, but the space somehow captured the right vibes with its décor, music and consistency. Plus, it is opened till 11pm on most days .

Hannam-dong comes peppered with hipster cafes and restaurants of all kinds, and it is not difficult for anyone to walk down just a couple of metres before exclaiming, ”This is so pretty.”

Yet, One in a Million stands out.

Its entrance alone may be ordinary-looking of white brick walls with dirty-millennial-pink accents and construction work going on behind. There are four pink-coloured chairs at the side of the wall, and they quickly turn into good photo spots for #OOTDs.

Somehow, the inteior works.

There are various spots that cater to different customers: a more outdoorsy garden on one side; cosy living room-like corners; and a long table for groups.

The café is spacious, filled with greenery and fragrance from fresh roses.

I know roses are expensive and do not last long, but do they add to the entire atmosphere? An absolute YES. (It is more common to find Daiso flowers in Singapore cafes, because we are always looking at ways to cut-cost, cut-cost.)

The menu offers a variety of beverages, with the recommended drinks being the Green Macha Latte, Milk Tea, Marco Polo Tea, Homemade Lemon & Peach Tea, Homemade Real Hawaiian Tea, Einspänner (Espresso with whipped cream) and Baby Latte – ice latte with ice cream.

Prices are on the slightly high side, with a drink costing between 5,500 Won (such as Latte) to 7,500 Won. That is SGD6.75 (USD4.95) to SGD9.20 (USD6.75).

The “Holiday” drink of Coconut Milk Latte (7,000 Won, SGD8.60, USD6.30) comes in a cup printed with “One In A Million” in that signature dusty pink colour, matching with the entire interior.

It tasted more creamy-coconuty than espresso coffee actually, on the slightly sweet side, but I suspect that the younger female customer could love that delightful sweetness.

Talking about sweets, you can get the Marble Choco Cheese Cake, White Tiramisu, Raspberry Cheese Cake, Cocho Cake, Red Velvet or Carrot Cake (6,500 – 7,000 Won).

Nothing spectacular about the cake, but good enough and cannot really fault that much.

Two things to note: I was probably the only male (other than the barista) in the entire shop. There were customers that came and left, but they were ALL female, and none of them brought their boyfriends.

There was a group that came with luggage. No, they were NOT on their way to the airport, but the suitcase contained pieces and pieces of fashionable clothes in which they mixed and matched to take photos. And I was very sure those Korean girls were not alone in this.

Cafes are no longer just about coffee and cakes.¬¬

Ah Ter Teochew Fishball Noodle Bar – Famous Amoy Street Food Centre BCM Stall Opens Restaurant Near Boat Quay

It is really about time that our humble hawkers are moving into restaurant shop spaces.

Let’s be honest here. Not that many years ago, there doesn’t seem to be much of a future for young people to take up “hawkerpreneur”. Until a few rather successful cases seem to have a spurring-on effect.

The Michelin Guide coming to Singapore was also a contributing factor.

We (meaning consumers) cannot always expect hawkers to be working in conditions of staggering heat, long hours, and still have to sell their food below a certain price, say $4 to $5.

Therefore, I hope that Ah Ter Teochew Fishball Noodles can become successful.

The stall which I go to occasionally at Amoy Street Food Centre Hawker selling fish ball and minced pork noodles, has opened a full-fledged shop at Lorong Telok (near Boat Quay).

This is helmed 2nd generation hawker Gilbert Lim (and other business partners) who has been described as “Hawker Hunk” by MissTamChiak (who took a brilliant photo of him cooking noodles, defined biceps and all).

However, as I usually visit Amoy during night time or Saturday mornings, I always tried the elder Uncle Lim’s version. Both father and son have their fans.

The stall has also been listed in the Michelin Guide under the less-talked about “Plate” category – technically defined as “restaurants where the inspectors have discovered quality food” and in another perspective means it didn’t get any star or Bib Gourmand.

Ie, consolation prize.

Anyway, the shop serves up value-for-money meals of Fishball Bak Chor Mee ($6, $8), Whole Abalone & Seafood Soup ($15), and sides of Fishballs ($5), Fishcakes ($5) and Marinated Wings ($5).

Just slightly more than the hawker centre pricing, but you get air-conditioned space and comfortable seats. OLS NEED AIRCON.

I did think the business partners did put in some effort to make their food and presentation more “atas”.

It is not only about selling hawker food at a shop. You could see that the bowls, utensils (gold chopsticks, yo) and furniture are specially sourced. Only feedback is they should try to play some music, rather than the same video which goes on an endless loop.

I have eaten Ah Ter a number of times, and would say this is quite an “upgrade”.

The sauce has a good mix of home-made chilli, just a slight notch of vinegar, and sweetness coming from ketchup – which I liked. Somehow, there is that right balance. But I can imagine some people who would think it is not “vinegary” enough.

The soup was tasty, with sweetness coming from the minced pork and seafood.

Okay, it is not a wow-wow-wow Bak Chor Mee, but I think it is definitely above the average bowl and deserves a mention.

The good news is, it opens way early in the morning at 7am for early risers, and all the way till 1am.

Mamaday Café – Whimsical Café From Taipei Opens In Hong Kong At Causeway Bay. Food Is Ironically 麻麻地 “Mamaday”

$
0
0

[Hong Kong] Hidden away on the second floor of a building in Causeway Bay is Mamaday, the second outlet of Taipei’s Mamaday café.

When I finally navigated my way upstairs, I saw a sign on their front door there says “Members only. To apply for membership, touch your tongue to your elbow.” Seriously?

I read further and thankfully it’s meant to be a joke.

One of the owners of the original Mamaday is a Hong Kong native and decided to open up a second outlet back home.

Noticing that having a meal in Hong Kong is a lot more about efficiency than focusing on the aesthetics or the “mood”, she hopes Mamaday Hong Kong will provide a change of mentality whether you are having a good day, a bad day or a “mama” day.

Playing with the Cantonese-English meaning, “Mama” 嘛嘛 Day, means a so-so, average day.

From the wacky plates with the Queen’s picture, to tongue-in-cheek captioned decals, the humour of the owners can be seen through the eclectic and whimsical décor.

Initially when I first browsed the photos of the café, I thought the place might be really messy looking and tacky.

Turns out, every corner of the café looks pretty photo-worthy and somehow the mish-mash of look worked quite well.

Food-wise, Mamaday does not have a very extensive menu and the offerings are mostly fusion-style; think Soft-Shell Crab Pizza and Thai-style Stir-Fry Pork Udon.

Also on the menu are some interesting beverages like Tiramisu Coffee and Purple Sweet Potato Latte.

I got there at lunchtime and was offered the set lunch menu (12-2pm) where I picked the Omurice with Unagi HK112 (SGD19.70) that came with a glass of iced red tea.

Sweet soy sauce flavoured rice was enveloped by an omelette, topped with a grilled unagi fillet.

The rice looked good when I first dug into it but unfortunately was not particularly flavourful.

Also, the omelette would have been better if it were slightly runnier. Overall a very average dish.

I also tried the Sole Fillet With Herb Pesto HK$106 (SGD18.60), which tasted more home-cooked than restaurant-standard.

The pesto sauce was not too bad but the Sole Fillet needed a bit more flavour.

The food is just as the name is – Mamaday (“Mama-tei” which means “so-so only” in the local Cantonese language.)

This place is probably better for chilling with a drink, taking some selfies rather than having a proper meal. Like what the menu says “It’s the middle of good and bad, yes and no, hot and cold. Average.”

However, I do like how the owners managed to transform this second storey shop unit into a cosy and fun space that caters to a more vibrant crowd.

Much detail has been put into the different aspects of the design from the door to the ceiling, if only as much attention could be paid to the quality of the food.

Just to take note, Mamaday is located closer to Causeway Bay MTR station even though the address states Wan Chai. It is right beside the flyover.

Spagtacular – Under-The-Radar Spaghetti Cafe Serving “Geylang Serai” Curry Pasta And Kimchi Pasta, At South Bridge Road

$

Another new café that has gone under the radar, even though its location is considered quite central.

Spagtacular at South Bridge Road (just opposite Law Society) offers an array of pasta dishes with a local twist.

Therefore, you can expect dishes such as Chilli Crab Pasta, Salted Egg Pasta and the likes.

Its interior was kind of a mish-mash, decorated with plastic flower pots on the tables, and a random Roman head statue at the corner – complete with some pinkish-red drips coming down the head. Not kidding.

Sorry to say this right at the get-go, but I actually think that the food is not bad, but someone needs to come in to work on the décor, music, presentation, and deciding what is the “brand story” of the place.

The starter of Har Cheong Kai Nibblets ($10) was in reality quite decent for its price – not the typical ones deep-fried from defrosted generic packs.

You would taste some of that prawn paste and added garlic sauce, the pieces were juicy and in sizable portion.

I may be nit-picking, but some thought into the accompanying chilli sauce would work wonders.

There are currently 5 pasta dishes – Mummy’s Assam ($15) of fried dory with rich sautéed assam paste; Chilli Crab ($15), The Golden Egg which is creamy salted egg pasta ($12); Kimchi Spring ($15); and Geylang Serai ($13) – curry pasta with marinated fried chicken cubes.

The “mistake” in ordering the chicken nibblets was, that two of the pasta dishes had similar chicken cubes, and thus made the meal rather monotonous.

Therefore, while I thought that the Geylang Serai curry pasta could work, having chicken pieces (like those you find in curries) or grilled chicken could work better to bring out flavours of the gravy better.

The Kimchi Pasta ($15) was served with crispy pork belly, overall had a good punch of spiciness and tanginess, but perhaps could do with a saucy base.

Spagtacular used to offer the option of hand-made pasta, but recently switched that out, which I thought was a waste.

I think they are possibly worrying about foot-traffic. Someone is working well in the kitchen, they just need to be more confident and consistent in what they are presenting.

Zapangi 자판기 – Pretty In Pink Café Hidden Behind A Vending Machine, At Mangwon-dong Seoul

$

[Seoul] The photogenic qualities of the places we sip our cuppa of Joe is every bit as important as the quality of the coffee itself.

There are always trendy new themed cafes and coffee shops popping up in Seoul.

Zapangi, with its neon pink vending machine entrance is one that has quickly captured the hearts of Seoulites and expats in the city, both of whom will line up patiently outside so as to capture the perfect shot.

Zapangi 자판기 (meaning “vending machine” in Korean) is situated in Seoul’s Mangwon-dong, a hip up-and-coming neighbourhood filled with artisan hangouts, microbreweries and independent boutiques.

You can reach the cute coffee place via subway. Simply take lines 5 or 6 and leave the Mangwon station 망원전철역 through exit 2. (Mangwon-dong sits between Hongdae and Sangam-dong.)

Most people are drawn to Zapangi for the sheer purpose of getting that cool capture for their Insta of them bursting out of a vending machine.

That is massively underestimating Zapangi though, this place has so much more to offer than simply good selfie potential.

The cafe’s tagline is “bottles and tins” and this is reflected in its simple presentation – cold beverages are served in milk style glass bottles, cakes are served in tins.

Zapangi’s “tin cakes” are served in perfectly polished metal tins with cute printed stickers that point towards what is inside.

The adorable confectionaries sold are often incredibly intricate and visually appealing – for example, cupcakes designed to look like a mermaid is diving inside.

The flavours range from a rich, decadent chocolate cake to slightly more subtle-sweet fruit cakes.

You can get the Coffee (6,500 Won, SGD7.90), Blue Berry / Peach (7,000 Won SGD8.50), Sweet Potato / Dark Chocolate (7,000 Won, SGD8.50) to the most photogenic “Mermaid” (9,500 Won, SGD11.60) Tin Cakes.

If you are a coffee aficionado, you can of course find all of the classics here – Black, Milk, Soy Coffee and Latte (4,500 Won – 5,500 Won, SGD5.50 – SGD6.70).

For photo purposes if you are not ordering a dessert, consider opting for one of the Aurora or Mermaid “Mocha” drinks (7.500 Won or 9,500 Won).

The chocolatey drink was rich and incredibly sweet, served with a phenomenal mound of whipped cream and sprinkles.

Zapangi is a little pricier than your average coffee shop, but not abnormally so compared to most other “themed” places. A coffee will set you back between 5,000 – 6,000 Won, and a dessert between 7,000 and 9,000 Won.

COMO Cuisine – NEW Menu With Breakfast Favourites And Comforting All-Day Dining Meals At Dempsey

People love dining at Dempsey for its relaxing and open vibes, that allows you to feel like you are out of the country.

COMO Cuisine at Dempsey Hill may be slightly off-the-radar, but with its classy charm and tough of elegance, is the restaurant to head to for that leisure, unhurried meal.

(Click PLAY for video highlights of COMO Cuisine.)

When I visited, that was what I noticed about the groups of diners – that they were taking time for the meal and conversations.

The restaurant is part of COMO Dempsey, a lifestyle destination which includes food places such as The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar by acclaimed Michelin chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Japanese restaurant Ippoh Tempura Bar By Ginza Ippoh, Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant Candlenut as well as food emporium COMO Marketplace.

It may be hard to pin-point what is the actual style of COMO Cuisine, but it has been described as ”a light touch to the big flavours of the region, reflecting Singapore’s heritage as a culinary melting pot”.

A thing to note is that it serves up healthy contemporary fare, not too heavy or rich, that makes in a suitable venue from brunch, lunch, dinner to high tea.

The distinctive style of its food is partly due to Executive Chef Timothy De Souza, with an Anglo-Indian heritage and culinary career across Australia, the Maldives, the Caribbean and Japan.

Therefore, it is not uncommon to find Western-style dishes with that twist of Asian, and you can find quite ‘colourful’ items from Tandoori Chicken Wrap, Chilled Soba Noodles, Chicken Schnitzel to Snapper Curry in its All-Day Dining menu.

Even if you are a regular, you will not get bored.

Another draw would be the lovely ambience of the space, beautiful setting, and lots of natural sunlight if you go during the day.

With a NEW menu, there are more reasons to pay the place a visit. If you haven’t, here are 10 of the signature food items from COMO Cuisine:

Croque Madame ($20)
For the early risers, COMO Cuisine has introduced a new and expanded breakfast menu with a wholesome range of both savouries and sweets; and freshly baked viennoiseries that change on a daily basis.

For the savoury items, check out the “Real Toast” with avocado crush ($16), Spiced Lentils ($16), 7-Grain Waffles ($18), Fluffy White Omelette ($20), and Organic Eggs ($8) made to your liking.

The Croque Madame, a French-style cheese sandwich, came recommended.

What you get is a crusty yet soft brioche, layered with both truffle cream sauce and truffle puree, Gruyere cheese, complete with a fried egg on top and dusting of Parmesan cheese.

While the sandwich looked simple in terms of presentation, you can smell its decadence – that whiff of truffle before you actually taste it; and richness of the creamy mix especially when the yolk flows through the layers.

Eggs Benedict ($20)
Other than the Croque Madame, the all-time favourite breakfast dish is the Eggs Benedict, of poached eggs with Parma ham, spinach, poured over with hollandaise sauce, on top of house-made sourdough.

Also glad to find Prosciutto (thinly sliced Italian dry-cured ham) on the classic egg dish, which added that mild saltiness and light crisp.

Blueberry Pancakes with Honeycomb Butter ($16)
If you are looking at something sweeter to start off the day, satisfy those cravings with Banana Bread with whipped tahini, coffee and maple ($12), Quinoa Porridge with cinnamon, apple, cranberry and nut milk ($14) or Sourdough Toast accompanied with house-made preserves ($8).

Of course, pancakes can always do the trick.

These thick-style pancakes are all about fluffy lightness. Made with buttermilk, egg white and topped with fresh blueberries, the blueberry butter gave the dessert natural sweetness, and there were honeycomb for that crisp contrast.

Acai Bowl ($16)
A classic breakfast bowl with acai berries blended with banana and blueberries, topped with house made granola, bee pollen, banana, chia seeds and nuts.

The almond butter sauce which is loosely Spanish-inspired, makes the base creamier and more satiating.

You can also complement the meal with the protein-loaded Muscle Milk ($12), the Culture Shock Yoghurt blended with strawberries, passion fruit and oranges ($12) to promote digestion, or therapeutic brews like the smooth and earthy-flavoured Alarm Clock ($8).

Salmon Cracker ($8)
Other than the Breakfast menu till 12pm, COMO Cuisine also offers an array of all-day dining options ranging from salads, snacks, sandwiches to pastas and main plates.

Looking at the diversity of the snacks, you won’t get just the ordinary food items but those with international influences such as Naan ($6), Broccoli Fritters ($6), Zucchini Flatbread ($12), Spiced Lamb Samosa ($8) and Mezze Platte ($28 for 2) which includes a selection of dips, vine leaves, falafel and flat bread.

For something light, go for the Salmon Cracker topped with house smoked salmon and jalapeño cream – tangy with just that slight bit of heat.

COMO Burger ($26)
Other than the Lobster Roll, the COMO Burger is another popular choice – of juicy wagyu beef patty within a soft milk bun, with Gruyere cheese, pancetta, mustard aioli, and pickles.

Salad is served on the side, together with tomato relish that add as a tangy-sweet dip for the fries.

Fritto Misto ($32/$52)
This is a Classic Italian summer dish which consists of a medley of crispy fried seafood with green salsa verde sauce. Available as an individual or larger shared portion.

What you get is calamari, prawns, scallops, snapper and baby zucchini lightly beer-battered then dip-fried, which can work as a starter or an alternative to Fish & Chips.

Other all-time favourites mains include the Snapper Curry with coconut curry, tomatoes, tamarind, okra and saffron rice ($28), and Grilled Squid ($26).

If you are a light eater, there is the Wild Rice with mushrooms, cabbage, corn, avocado and tahini tamari dressing ($18) or the Roast Cauliflower with kale, tomato, pomegranate and garlic yoghurt ($18).

Pandan Crêpe with Mango, Passionfruit and Coconut Sorbet ($12)
To me, the desserts at COMO Cuisine are the must-orders.

My favourite of the lot is the Pandan Crêpe, which reminded me of the mango crepe wrap – a ‘staple’ in many Hong Kong dessert shops.

Except that this had a pandan crepe covering, which had that familiar fragrance, wrapping coconut sorbet (instead of cream) with a tangy mango-passionfruit centre.

Parfait with Butterfly Pea Flowers, Pineapple and Lemongrass Ice ($12)
The plating alone is fine-dining restaurant worthy. Chef revealed that this is a play on Singapore’s ice cream sandwich without the actual carbs, featuring a harmony of local and Asian flavours.

The sandwich layer in this case is replayed by butterfly pea ice, with soft pineapple ice cream within.

This was surrounded by lemongrass crushed ice, which reminded me of the old-school popsicle, all cooling and refreshing.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Corn Waffle and Chilli Maple ($26)
During the weekends, you can pamper with a gratifying brunch.

Featuring a spread that includes sandwiches like the Truffle Toastie with Parma ham, cheddar cheese and sourdough ($24), Burrata Tartine with spiced brioche and stone fruit jam ($20), or brunch favourites of Fluffy White Omelette with mushroom, leek, roast tomatoes ($20), Eggs Royale ($26) and COMO Breakfast of eggs, roast tomatoes, slab bacon, mushrooms and rosti ($22).

A highlight is the Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($26), not only because the chicken is marinated in 11 spices. The slab is also crumbed in cornflakes, making the outer layer ultra-crispy.

Also the savoury waffles base is mixed with corn and spring onion, then drizzled with corn puree.

If there is not on, the accompanying chilli-maple sauce makes it particularly tastier.

COMO Cuisine High Tea ($70 for two persons)
With the lush greenery of the Dempsey Hills as the backdrop, COMO Cuisine also offers an Instagram-perfect, dainty Hi-Tea Set.

Featuring a selection of sweets and savouries, this comes with a selection of bites from Crab Bun, Flaxseed Mille-Feuille, Smoked Ham, Warm Spiced Scones, Pandan Profiterole, Green Tea Opera to Calamansi Tartlet.

It is available every Tuesdays and Fridays (except public holidays) from 3pm to 5pm. For a supplement of $15, you get a sparkling Taittinger Champagne by the glass or as a refreshing Bellini.

Fook Kin 福劲 – Class 95 DJs The Muttons Open A Roast Pork Restaurant. So Is It Fook Kin Good?

The Muttons – famous Class 95 DJs Justin Ang and Vernon A, have opened a Roast Meat Restaurant at Killiney Road in collaboration with Roast Paradise. Roast Paradise currently have stalls at Old Airport Road Food Centre and Ang Mo Kio. Young hawkerpreneurs must support.

They sell many kinds of meats, but mutton. (Sorry, just had to add that in.)

Writing this review can be tricky leh. They are the ”Ah Ge” of radio – must show respect. Just like if Zoe Tay would to open a restaurant one day, who dare say not nice?

To be fair, Fook Kin 福劲 has already been enjoying a steady crowd despite being in the soft opening phase. Many of the previous restaurants here, did that really have that kind of privilege.

In terms of décor, mood and pricing, Fook Kin got it quite right.

It reminds me of a more casual version of Sum Yi Tai with its slightly dark lighting and neon pink signs. It is “In The Mood For Love” but Singapore version. They play remixed versions of oldies and Cantonese hits that would reveal your age if you know how to sing them.

They are known for Specialty Roast, with items such as Caramelised Char Siew ($6.80, $17, $34), Golden Crackling Siew Yoke ($6.80, $17, $34), and Roast Duck ($12, $16, $26, $50).

If you work at SingTel and nobody wants to have lunch with you, you can have the Roast Delight of Char Siew or Sio Yoke with rice or noodles, inexpensively priced at $8.80. (I know there will always be people who say hawker centre will cost half its price, but rental here expensive.)

There are small plates for sharing such as Crispy Squid ($12.80), Two Way Kai Lan ($9.80), Golden Lotus Roots Crisps ($7.80), Salted Egg Wings and Drumlets ($9.80), and Fluffy Omelette ($8.80).

Char Siew is the type of food item that gets people quite divided – some like them fatty, lean, super charred, thick, thin… it goes on.

Cannot Fook Kin please everybody.

The Caramelised Char Siew is KL-style and uses a top grade of pork, charcoal-fired roasted, with a good balance of both meat and fat. It is not the style you typically get from your wanton mee, in fact, I seldom see this version sold in Singapore.

Some would like that the outer layer was quite sweet and charred, and because there was a good proportion of fats, it did have a melt-in-the-mouth effect. I don’t mind having this again, but I can imagine diners wanting a meatier cut.

As for the Siew Yoke, I enjoyed its crispy crackling, though thought it was on the saltier side and the meat portion could be moister and more tender.

The other of the side dishes ordered, I thought were the weaker links.

The Triple Happiness ($9.80) of cold tofu, chopped salted and century egg and topped with floss and salmon roe, looked like a quickly assembled dish without much synergy.

Like you are forced to be part of a team with a bunch of colleagues who do not know you are all. Perhaps a more unifying, hotter sauce would have worked better.

You know what? The Night Owl Cinematics (NOC) team should just come and review this, and perhaps declare on Youtube, “Fook Kin is Food King Good”. I wanna know what Dee Kosh has to say.

For me, it is a 2-star (out of 3). Not bad, not bad.

The Living Room Eating House – Spacious, Pleasant Cafe With Inexpensive Pricing, Found Hidden Within Leng Kee Community Club

There seems to be a trend of cafes opening up in community centres, such as Daily Affairs Dining & Bar at Cairnhill Community Club opened by an ex-Hilton Chef, and SOD at Ci Yuan Community Centre.

With this in mind, I try to search for such cafes that nobody has written about – so that you know.

This brought me to The Living Room Eating House located at Leng Kee Community Club, which is a 10 to 15 minutes’ walk away from Redhill MRT station.

The café occupied quite a big space with friendly-cosy vibes, popular with families (you just pray that the children don’t cry too loudly and run around).

I can imagine that if customers can come in during non-peak hours to have a kopi and read a book.

Seems to be operated by a family, the café has rather personable service and serves up local delights in the likes of Nasi Lemak (from $3), Mee Siam ($3.50), Prawn Noodles ($4, $5, $6), Big Prawn Noodles ($8, $10), Bak Kut Teh ($6.5), and Chee Cheong Fun ($2).

These are your coffee shop pricing, or maybe just that 1 to 2 dollars more, with aircon-comfort.

When I ordered a couple of items with 2 drinks, I was once again pleasantly surprised that the bill came up just slightly above $10.

Wait, this cannot even buy one (or maybe half) eggs ben at another café.

The server highly recommended the Prawn Noodles which came with generous ingredients. I thought it had a “homely” feel, as though a lovely ah-ma or mother prepared it.

Thus, its weakest link was perhaps the soup – not as robust and hot as what you would get in a hawker centre. But it was not too bad.

The Mee Siam skewed towards the tangy side due to the addition of assam.

As for the Economic Bee Hoon (starts from $1), it was good-standard fare that would appeal to those who prefer your food to be not that oily and greasy.

If I stay in the vicinity, this would be my go-to place for simple local food, other than the Redhill 85 Food Centre.

Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke – Value-For-Money Quality Beef Bowls, With Chefs Cooking Right In Front Of You

$

What can I say? Keisuke does it again, this time with a Beef Sukiyaki Don concept.

The group had some terrific ramen and Japanese food concepts, such as Ramen Keisuke Lobster King at Clarke Quay, and Keisuke Kani King at Orchard Cineleisure; as well as Teppanyaki Hamburg Nihonbashi Keisuke Bettei with hamburg and free-flow salad.

However, there were others that wasn’t my kind of thing – Champon King and Ginza Kamo Soba Kyudaime Keisuke serving duck ramen.

Despite the rather unheard-of location at Onze – it is actually just a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT, behind Tanjong Pagar Plaza (Block 5), this Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke should attract some crowd. My tip is come before the peak lunch and dinner time.

There are many Beef Bowl shops in Singapore, and at one point in time, there was at least one every single month.

But not every Beef Bowls are created equal. Some would glam it up by using wagyu and adding some truffle, and hope it will sell. Unfortunately, not.

Keisuke includes some “gimmicks” but they actually add to the taste profile or enhance the dining experience.

The menu is straight forward, with the offering of Beef Sukiyaki Don ($13.90) or Kiwami Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($29.90). You can top up beef at $10 and $25 respectively.

This is when you deliberate between the cheaper US Prime Beef option, or indulge in Yonezawa Beef A4.
Someone told me, ”Actually, not much of a difference….” Sorry, I would like to say there is A LOT of difference. If it is pay-day, just order the Wagyu and make yourself very much happier.

Here’s how this is different from just any other Beef Bowl shops: there will be a dedicated chef who cooks the food in front of you. They wear white jackets and ties, which reminds me of those in the higher end tempura shops in Japan.

The Koshihikari grains is not cooked in a normal rice cooker per se, but in a double-lidded Japanese donabe that helps retain heat and cook up moist and fluffier tasting rice.

The beef is cooked ala minute. As a customer, you smell that sweet tare aroma and hear and enticing sizzling even before eating. Despite the small restaurant with narrow space, it doesn’t “smell” that strongly.

Towards the end, the chef would pour the rest of the sukiyaki sauce into a separate bowl, so that you can include to your liking and “manage your own saltiness”.

The marbling of the Wagyu beef was superb for its price, the slices meaty and slightly fatty and could down your throat.

While some diners may frown at “sukiyaki” items because they tend to be too sweet-savoury, the balance was just right for this bowl.

If you are feeling on a budget, the normal Beef Sukiyaki Don at $13.90 with its tougher slices, still makes a satisfying, enjoyable meal with all those ingredients and interactive experience. I think I will come back for this.

Dopa Dopa – Artisanal Gelato Cafe With Creamy Roasted Pistachio And Hojicha Flavours, At South Bridge Road

During a trip to Italy, the tour guide told us ”Don’t trust shops with gelato piled up like mountains, but those kept within metallic containers”.

He also told us to look out for the colours of the gelato – it should look natural and pale, not brightly coloured ones like they belong to a fantasy world.

Why I am saying this?

Not many gelato shops in Singapore keep their stuff in those round metallic Pozzetti tubs with a flat lid, and I happened to find those in Dopa Dopa.

Dopa Dopa Creamery located at South Bridge Road has been earning generally positive reviews with its gelato churned from scratch, included with natural ingredients such as nuts, fruits and tea leaves.

The small café has limited seating and only serves up 8 different flavours at any one time.

These include home roasted Pistachio, Hazelnut, Ferrero, Green Tea Toasted Rice, Hojicha, Speculoos with Lotus Biscuit, Watermelon Mint and Apple Ginger sorbet.

A single scoop goes for $3.90, while you can also opt for a double or triple ($7.50, $11).

What worked for me was its consistency. You could tell as the server pulled (or scraped) the contents out from the tub – the gelato was creamy, slightly sticky. The colours also looked right, close to the ingredients used to make them.

The flavours were slightly more ‘intense’ than the usual ice cream. For example, there would be that slight roasted tea aroma as you savour your Hojicha gelato.

The only thing I found that could be worked upon was its sweetness, perhaps it could be a tad lower (like 10%) because it ‘covered’ the natural flavours of the nutty variants.

I checked around with three other friends who went on separate occasions – two agreed with me; one said the sweetness was already lower than most other shops (I also tend to find ice cream here, meaning Singapore, generally on the sweeter side.)

Dopa Dopa Creamery

Thrill of the Grill – All-You-Can-Eat BBQ Buffet With Wagyu Beef and Seafood, At Lime Restaurant PARKROYAL on Pickering

This is for the barbecue lovers, yet still want to have your food in air-conditioned comfort.

Many of us love the experience of outdoor BBQing, yet hate to ‘suffer’ under the hot weather and smoke, and worst end up with burnt (and wasted) chao-tar food. We are after all, not professional chefs.

(Click PLAY for highlights of “Thrill of the Grill”.)

To resolve that ‘problem’, Lime Restaurant at PARKROYAL on Pickering has launched a NEW outdoor meat and seafood grill, where you can enjoy All-You-Eat Barbecued Food.

The only catch is that the special buffet has a limited run from Friday 5 to 21 Sunday October 2018, so you got to make your bookings soon.

The concept came about due to popular demand, as previous smaller runs of an outdoor grill proved to be popular with diners.

You get to pick and choose meats and seafood to be prepared, char-grilled by professional chefs – so you don’t end up under or overcooking.

All the chosen ingredients are cooked over authentic charcoal grills at the wooden-decked barbeque station, and diners can watch food being cooked and interact with the chefs.

The food will then be sent to your table for you to savour in the stylish interiors and air-conditioned comfort. There are also some seats for you to experience alfresco dining, best when there is a breeze in the evening.

Lime’s newly appointed Executive Chef Yap Wai Lunn has also shared that he added some Asian elements to literally spice things up, and therefore you can get interesting and varied choices such as Lamb Shish Kebabs, Chicken Tandoori, and Oysters with Kicap Manis sauce.

Wagyu Beef Cubes
Generally cooked till medium, the Wagyu Beef Cubes are likely to be the most popular barbecued item here – succulent and juicy especially when some of the fats has melted throughout the meat.

If you need more flavours to your meat, there is also a variety of Asian sauces to choose from.

Lamb Shish Kebabs
Not the most common buffet food in Singapore, but great that Lime has quite a selection there.

To get the flavours into the lamb, the meat is marinated long enough, then grilled hot and fast on skewers over moderate heat.

The chefs would also constantly turn the skewers to keep the heat consistent, until the pieces are slightly brown and charred on the outside, and still moist on the inside.

The tasty flavour is a combination of both the marinate and the lamb. And here’s a tip: this would go well with some salads from the buffet spread.

Pork Belly Char Siew
While the this is called “Char Siew”, the meat is actually cut to longer, square pieces, completed with aromatic marinated flavour.

While there was a good balance of fats to lean meat, I wished that the top layer could have more of a “crackling” for more contrast.

Chicken Tandoori
A dish of chicken leg marinated in yoghurt, lemon juice and other aromatic apices, then grilled on a skewer.

The good-old classic item had that luscious, smoky flavour; and I would recommend pairing this with some grilled vegetables and roasted corn on the cob to balance it out.

Seabass in Spicy Yellow Sauce
Cooked in an aluminium container and possibly not the most photogenic dish, this was in reality my favourite item that I would go seconds for.

Loved that soft, flaky fish with the mildly spicy kick with that touch of sweetness.

Sambal Marinated Squid
Perhaps you can save that one trip to Newton Food Centre, and enjoy the sambal sotong here.

The succulent squid (no rubbery textures here) was marinated with a special thick spicy sambal sauce, that could make you go ”Shiok”.

Oyster Kicap Manis
I have yet to have tried Oysters prepared like this – fresh ocean-trawled oysters added with Kicap Manis sauce.

This is an Indonesia-originated sauce, which is like a sweetened soy sauce with dark colour and thick syrupy consistency. It provides a distinct and unique Asian touch to the plump oysters, with its pronounced and sweet tang.

Clams with Kam Heong sauce
If you are into zhi-char dishes, you should be familiar with “Kam Heong” (金香) which literally translates as “golden fragrance”.

Typically used in Malaysian-style stir-fry, the spice blend includes dried shrimps, curry powder, shallots and garlic, therefore has a distinct fragrance, pairing very well with clams.

Just so that you get things clear, the outdoor barbecue grill is just one component of the extensive Lime buffet.

The interactive kitchens inside Lime will also feature a line-up of International specialties and local favourites such as Mushroom Risotto, Potato Rosti, Laksa Noodles, Chilli Crab Pasta, and Kueh Pie Tee.

Also save stomach space for desserts and rotational cakes such as the rich and luscious Peanut Butter Chocolate Cup with Gianduja Chantilly, Passionfruit Meringue Tart, Coconut Pandan Mousse, and assortment of Nonya Kueh.

Not forgetting about the iconic Matcha Chocolate Fondue Fountain.

”Thrill of the Grill” Dates & Pricing
The themed buffet is available daily from 5th (Fri) to 21st October (Sun) 2018, between 6.30pm and 10.30pm.

SGD88++ per adult inclusive of free flow coffee and tea SGD44++ per child between 4 and 12 years old.

KToast – Korean Sandwich Cafe Opens At Clementi, Said To Be “Totally 100% Korean Toast By Korean Chef”

An “Isaac Toast-ish” Korean Toast café has opened in the heart of Clementi, located at Grantral Mall. This building used to be known as Cityvibe, next to Clementi Mall (just in case you have never heard of “Grantral”).

The shop serves up “authentic Korean Toasts”, with a Korean chef behind the recipes and working in the kitchen. The chef is said to be recruited from Myeongdong and is a certified barista.

The sauces used are also imported from Korea, with ONE secret sauce created by the chef.

You may wonder what exactly is Korean street toast?

These breakfast item is commonly served from street carts and kiosks target at the early morning office workers, to provide them with a convenient, economical and filling meal. Also easy to grab-and-go.

In Singapore, the two most prominent stores are Isaac Toast and Egg Stop (not to be confused with the original Egg Drop 에그드랍).

Items offered by the new KToast include the original Ktoast – which includes ham, egg and cheese ($2.90), Bacon Toast ($3.90), Bulgogi Toast ($4.90), Chicken Toast ($4.90) and Potato Toast ($3.90).

Also available are coffee drinks, ade, juices and smoothies ($2.50 to $4.50).

I was recommended to try the Hot Bulgogi Toast ($4.90). True enough, a Korean chef was working meticulously, pan-frying the ingredients and assembling the toast together (How do these Korean men get their porcelain glowing skin again?)

In terms of packaging and varieties offered, KToast does remind us of Isaac Toast.

There were some elements that I liked – that it was freshly made and piping hot; that thinly shredded cabbage was added to balance off the ‘heatiness’; and both the bread and egg were fluffy.

The sauces provided an interesting mix of flavours, so you get some honey-sweetness as you are taking bites. The main thing I wished for, would be there could be more “punch” to the spiciness.

As sandwiches are freshly made, customers have to wait about 5 minutes or so (again, depending on the queue), so be slightly patient.

10 New Cafes In October – Cafes You Probably Haven’t Heard About, Serving Korean Toast, Sugar-Free Cakes, Sichuan Brunch

If you have read DanielFoodDiary.com for a while, you would realise that I have a special liking of featuring cafes that nobody heard and has written about.

Some of these cafes are located in obscure places; while there are many others who are clueless about marketing and advertising (No, merely setting up a Facebook and Instagram account doesn’t count.)

My “job” would have been easier if a) these new café owners / administrators actually reply their emails. I would say only 30 – 40% do, and that is despite reminders from Facebook and IG DMs; b) while there are shops who are actually closed despite publishing they are opened.

No telephone numbers to reach out to them either. Tough ah.

Anyway, I would say 8 or 9 out of the 10 cafes listed here are mostly unheard of, with the exception of My Little Pony Café which would gather some interest from fans.

Also, that is because the owner takes pains to craft a press release, send the menu, along with taking high resolution photos. (So new café owners: things don’t just drop from the sky; customers don’t just walk in like that.)

All righty. Enough of my ranting (just needed to get it out). Hope you enjoy October’s edition. 2 more months to Christmas. Time really flies!

Halcyon & Crane
Paragon Level 3 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 9727 5121
Opening Hours: 9am – 10 pm (Mon – Sun)

Western Meets Sichuan Food In The Heart Of Orchard
Halcyon & Crane brings about Western-meets-Sichuan café-style dining and drinking at Orchard Paragon.

Its food is modern European with Sichuan influence, and has a well-designed chic and serene pavilion concept where you can take a break after all that shopping.

Some of their signature items include King’s Chicken Hash Benedict ($21) of English muffins topped with gong bao chicken, sous-vide egg and Cheddar cheese; Beetroot & Seafood Risotto ($32) made with Japanese pearl rice and given a touch of spice from pickled chilli; Baby Chicken Roulade ($32); and Chicken & Mushroom Capellini ($23), a nourishing soup of chicken and bamboo mushrooms with quality vermicelli noodles imported from Sichuan.

Soft launch phase, give them time to settle in.

Duxton 41
41 Duxton Road, Singapore 089505 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Tel: +65 6224 1941
Opening Hours: 10 am – 10 pm (Mon – Sat), 10 am – 6 pm (Sun)

Café Serving Sugar Free Cakes
Duxton 41 isn’t your typical café. This is probably the first cake cafe that is completely sugar free in Singapore. What?

All the desserts have no added sugar but still taste sweet. The rationale is because the owners who are fitness enthusiasts wanted to provide an alternative for people who try to be healthy or just cut down on the sugar consumption.

Their Souflee Cheesecake is gluten free, soft serve is diary free and they even have a vegan chocolate brownie.

This is also where you can get handwoven Thai Silk from Almeta, Bangkok.

Charming Chic Café With Dusty Pink Interiors At Serangoon
Amber Ember, a chic café located at Upper Serangoon Road, at a standalone building situated next to Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre.

While marble white with cement grey are the norm café colours (too many actually), I was greeted with a store dressed with dusty pink interiors. Which was charming in its own ways.

Their brunch menu revolves around a range of jaffles options. From savoury; Truffle Shrooms ($11) and K-Pork ($10) to sweets; PB & Jelly ($8) and Chocobanana ($8).

I went for the Pablo’s Beef ($10) which came with minced beef, capsicum and loads of melted morzerella cheese. Sinful, but I like.

Spagtacular
54 South Bridge Road Singapore 058685 (10 min walk from Clarke Quay MRT)
Tel: +65 9326 9599
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri – Sat), Closed Sun

Under-The-Radar Spaghetti Café
Spagtacular at South Bridge Road (just opposite Law Society) offers an array of pasta dishes with a local twist.

Therefore, you can expect dishes such as Chilli Crab Pasta, Salted Egg Pasta and the likes.

The starter of Har Cheong Kai Nibblets ($10) was in reality quite decent for its price – not the typical ones deep-fried from defrosted generic packs.

Spagtacular (South Bridge Road)

Dopa Dopa Creamery
29 South Bridge Rd, #01-01, Singapore 058665
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Sun – Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri – Sat)

Artisanal Gelato Cafe With Creamy Roasted Pistachio Flavour

The flavours were slightly more ‘intense’ than the usual ice cream. For example, there would be that slight roasted tea aroma as you savour your Hojicha gelato.

The Living Room Eating House
400 Lengkok Bahru, #01-01, Singapore 159049
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 5:30pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Spacious, Pleasant “Community Centre” Cafe With Inexpensive Pricing
The Living Room Eating House is located at Leng Kee Community Club, which is a 10 to 15 minutes’ walk away from Redhill MRT station.

The café occupied quite a big space with friendly-cosy vibes, popular with families.

It has rather personable service and serves up local delights in the likes of Nasi Lemak (from $3), Mee Siam ($3.50), Prawn Noodles ($4, $5, $6), Big Prawn Noodles ($8, $10), Bak Kut Teh ($6.5), and Chee Cheong Fun ($2).

These are your coffee shop pricing, or maybe just that 1 to 2 dollars more, with aircon-comfort. The Living Room Eating House (Lengkok Bahru)

Items offered by the new KToast include the original Ktoast – which includes ham, egg and cheese ($2.90), Bacon Toast ($3.90), Bulgogi Toast ($4.90), Chicken Toast ($4.90) and Potato Toast ($3.90).

I was recommended to try the Hot Bulgogi Toast ($4.90). True enough, a Korean chef was working meticulously, pan-frying the ingredients and assembling the toast together.

There were some elements that I liked – that it was freshly made and piping hot; that thinly shredded cabbage was added to balance off the ‘heatiness’; and both the bread and egg were fluffy. KToast (Clement)

Opening Hours: 10.00am – 6.00pm (Mon – Wed, Fri – Sat), 10:30am – 6:00pm (Sun), Closed Thurs

Well Hidden Workshop Cafe In The East
From the appearance alone, you would not expect to find such a café here, located at a quiet Upper Aljunied HDB estate un-obstructively on the ground floor.

The place has an interesting name as well – “Make Your Own”, which is actually a D.I.Y. workshop studio, recently expanded with a workshop café concept.

They have a small menu selection – all vegan friendly, eggs and dairy free. Coffee is served with organic soymilk. Also offered are a couple of homely light bites such as Vegan Triple Chocolate Brownie ($4.00), Vegan Choco Walnut Banana Muffin ($3.80), and Vegan Mushroom & Veg Tofu Frittata ($5.80), and Cranberry Coconut Scones.

Perhaps this is not the kind of place you will go out-of-the-way just to have a cup of cuppa, but if you intend to have a reprise, get involved in such kind of crafts, this could be the café to spend a leisure afternoon at.

When the popular Splash n Decker outlets serving sandwiches at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic closed, students were left disappointed.

The shop has “re-appeared”, and renamed as Sandwich Lab at basement 4 of ION Orchard, operated under the Four Leaves Bakery group.

Other than the previous popular favorites of Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich ($4.80), Spicy Chicken Potato Sandwich ($4.00), Bacon & Egg Sandwich ($4.50), there are new offerings such as the Peri Peri Chicken Sandwich ($4.80) and Tom Yum Seafood Sandwich ($4.50). Sandwich Lab (ION Orchard)

Gyu Nami – $10 Wagyu Beef Bowl From Amoy, Now Found At Orchard Gateway. Still $10

$
0
0

The stall known to sell $10 Wagyu Beef Bowls at Amoy Street Food Centre, has opened a shop in the heart of Orchard Road.

The question that could be on your mind… Yes, the bowls are still sold at $10 each.

Recently, there are a couple of hawker stall owners who opened eatery or restaurants, who met with fairly successful results.

Some examples are Hai Kee Brothers (Coffeeshop stall at Bedok to Chinatown Point); Fook Kin 福劲 (Old Airport Road stall to roast restaurant in Killiney); and Ah Ter Teochew Fishball Noodle Bar (Amoy Street stall to Noodle Bar near Boat Quay).

The new Gyu Nami is located at the basement of Orchard Gateway, the space previously occupied by Alfero Gelato and Andiamo Gelato). However, the shop is not as conspicuous and may not attract that much foot traffic.

The Signature Wagyu Roast Beef Don is still sold at $10, however there is also a large option at $13. You can top up $2 to make is a set with miso soup and mochi. (I wasn’t that keen in the mochi.)

But wait ah, there is also service tax here.

I ordered the large because I noticed that the other tables’ bowls looked quite shallow, and I needed more protein after a gym workout.

The roasted wagyu beef slices continued to be both soft and tender, all reasonably large slices with that beautiful pinkiness on the surface.

The accompanying sous vide egg and creamy yogurt sauce helped ease the dryness, and added that element of stickiness (otherwise could have been a tad dry).

Compared to the poster and what I had in Amoy, the $10 bowl didn’t look as tall and well-presented, but this is understandable considering the town-rental.

There is also an Ungai Don ($12) offered with sous vide egg hidden below the eel.

Overall, a straight-forward bowl with little surprises and the portion may not be enough for hungry diners.

The Orchard crowd can be fairly unpredictable, compared to the CBD diners who won’t mind a quick-fix of $10 Roast Beef Bowls – and lunch time crowd WILL be there rain or shine.

I reckon with a shop, the young owners may need to experiment more with providing options of varied sizing (example, an even bigger bowl), offering sides, and speeding up the assembling process.

Edge – Brand NEW Sunday Champagne Brunch, With Indulgent Spread From Alaskan King Crab, Penang Signatures & Thai Delights

$

7 live food theatres, 16 stations of signature premium delights, more than 150 dishes and over 40 different types of desserts, for a 3-and-a-half hours long brunch outing.

Edge at Pan Pacific Singapore has recently revamped its Sunday Champagne Brunch, and looks set to be one of the most extensive and impressive Sunday brunches around.

Where do I even start?

(Click PLAY for highlights of Edge’s Brand New Sunday Champagne Brunch Experience)

I genuinely think that this brand-new brunch designed by Chef de Cuisine Howard Leong and team, has (pardon the cliché) something for everyone.

Other than the familiar favourites such as Edge’s signature satays, the new additions include a larger variety of interesting food, and activities for the family.

The two activity sessions you can look forward to include a cooking or baking demonstration, and cocktail making where you can get your hands on creating your favourite drinks… after a potentially heavy meal.

Here are 20 reasons (I am sure there are more) why you should experience Edge’s Brand New Sunday Champagne Brunch:

1. Seven interactive live food theatres
Not just one or two, but seven live food theatres that features quite an international spread of food, all prepared a la minute.

What I appreciated was that it was not just about the usual food (though you will still find the crowd favourite Laksa with prawns and quail eggs here), you get a range from Penang Fried Rice Cake, Whole Alaksan King Crab Leg, Charcoal Waffles with Boston Lobster, Pan Seared Togarashi Foie Gras, to Sea Urchin Squid Ink Tagliolini.

Feel free to observe or interact with the chefs to find out more about the food, or customise the items to your liking.

2. 16 stations of signature premium delights
If there are two main tips for the Sunday Brunch, I would say recee first; then pace yourself.

There is an extensive variety of both Western (European) and Asian delicacies, featuring a selection of almost 150 dishes.

If you are lost, some of my personal highlights are the Penang and Thai cuisine live stations, Edge’s signature Satays, and the magnificent dessert spread.

3. Seafood on ice
I cannot remember exactly how many Alaskan King Crab claws I took, but I just knew they were sweet, succulent and absolutely delicious.

Other than the crabs, the other ocean-fresh seafood on ice you can look forward to include Boston Lobsters, Black Mussels, Flower Crab, Prawns, Crayfish, Poached Clams, and freshly shucked Oysters.

4. Whole Alaskan king crab leg station
If you like your Alaskan King Crab hot, also included is a new station in which the crustacean would be poached in a court-bouillon broth for a comforting treat.

5. Selection of sashimi and chirashi sushi
The glorious presentation of the sashimi and the salmon cubes lined with caviar was like a dream come true.

On another note, do not miss out the “Japanese Masters” right near this section for some crispy Tempura delights including White Bait, Okonomiyaki and Chef’s special of Nikujaga beef served in a mini claypot.

6. Seasonal flambé trolley
What happens is that the chefs will push a flambé trolley around for an interactive experience.

The food changes seasonably, so you can get anything from Strawberry and Champagne Risotto, Squid Ink and Crab Risotto and Scallop and Citrus Risotto. I had the creamy Squid Ink and Crab Risotto.

7. New Thai highlights
This is a new section featuring Thai favourites of Seafood Pad Thai, Grilled Pork Belly Skewer, Thai Fish Cake and Pad Kra Pao – minced pork with Thai basil. They toned down on the spiciness, making the food more suitable for the family.

8. Penang delights
If you miss Penang street food, just head over to the Duck Egg Fried “Koay Kak” live station which showcases Fried Rice Cake.

This is very similar to the local version of “Chai Tau Kueh”, featuring soft homemade rice cakes fried with bean sprouts, pickled radish, duck egg, complete with the iconic dark sauce. The wok-hei was everything.

Other than that, the opposite station is where you can find “Kimberly Street Kway Chap”, and the bowl was quite authentic tasting and I relished on how soft the pork belly and intestines were.

9. A la minute grills
Freshly-grilled Herb Garlic Tiger Prawns, Marinated Honey Chicken and assorted signature “Pan Pacific Homemade Sausages” which are chunky and juicy, paired with condiments tableside.

10. Pastas
Pastas cooked to order. Choose from the richer Sea Urchin Squid Ink Tagliolini with cherry tomatoes and parsley; or the lighter and refreshing Chilled Angel Hair Pasta with Kombu and White Truffle Vinaigrette.

11. Modern Western interpretations
The popular choice would be the decadent Pan-seared Togarashi Foie Gras served with churros and berries dip.

The Charcoal Waffles corner feature two types of savoury options, choose from either the poached egg with deep-fried baby squids or the sambal boston lobster with spinach and hollandaise sauce.

12. Farmer’s cheese theatre
Up to 18 types of artisanal cheeses available including Kikorangi Blue (New Zealand), Cranberry Wesleydale (England) and Cahill’s Porter Cheddar (Ireland). Do check out the indulgent Swiss Cheese Fondue Station.

13. Dessert theatre
An outstanding display of over 40 sweet treats at Edge’s dessert theatre, from Red Velvet Cake, Mango Coconut Cake, Lychee Rose Raspberry St Honore, Strawberry Madeleines, Matcha Mango Passion Gateau, Lychee Rose, Yam Soft Cake, to Matcha Yuzu.

Or enjoy desserts of Chocolate Lava Cake with Gelato, Matcha Waffle with Azuki Beans, and Imagawayaki (Japanese pancake).

14. Jumbo desserts
Also included are the jumbo desserts – and I mean larger than your face jumbo, which includes a rotational selection of Giant Choux Puff, Giant Pastry Burger or Giant Apple Tart Tartin.

15. Kids’ desserts
For families with children, you will be glad to know that the young ones will be sufficiently ‘distracted’ with the activities available, such as a roving balloon sculptor and cotton candy machine.

16. Cooking demonstration
Adding to the theatrical element of Edge’s Sunday Brunch are two activity sessions.

If cooking or baking is preferred, join the Chefs from 2pm to 2.30pm where diners can learn how to cook one highlight from the Sunday brunch spread, such as Coriander Crab Cake with Curry Mayo or Sticky Date Pudding.

17. Cocktail making demonstration
