5 Korean Sandwich Places In Singapore – From Isaac Toast, Egg Stop, To The “Hidden” KToast

You may be wondering what’s a “Korean” Toast. Isn’t it just another sandwich.

Maybe that is true.

Over in Korea, this breakfast item is commonly served from street carts and kiosks target at the early morning office workers, to provide them with a convenient, economical and filling meal. Also easy to grab-and-go.

What distinguishes it, is perhaps the use of Korean sauces such as spicy gochujang within, and fillings with Korean seasoning such as Bulgogi beef and kimchi.

Here are 5 Korean Sandwich Places In Singapore:

NY Night Market – 313@somerset
313@somerset #01-29, 313 Orchard Rd, Singapore 238895
Tel: +65 6957 4620
Opening Hours: 8am – 11pm Last order 10.30pm (Sun – Thurs), 8am – 1am Last order 12.30am (Fri – Sat)

Ideal as a hearty breakfast, quick lunch or afternoon snack, NY Night Market’s sarnies ($5.90 – $6.90, only available at 313@somerset outlet) are hefty stacks composed with toasted brioche, sliced cheese, and shredded cabbage.

A dollop of a special secret-recipe jam in sandwiched in between.

There are seven choices available, including the best-selling Hawaiian Freestyle ($6.90) made with a chicken patty with corn omelette, grilled pineapple and BBQ sauce.

Another popular choice among Korean food lovers is the Bulgogi Babe ($6.90) which includes slices of bulgogi beef with corn omelette and pickles.

The third recommendation is a brekkie favourite: You’re Bacon Me Hungry ($6.90), sinfully offering strips of crispy bacon with scrambled egg and hash brown.

I enjoyed the freshly prepared creamy scrambled egg, which went well with sweetish jam which reminded me of pineapple. However, I did wish there was a spicy sauce in between to make it more distinctly “Korean”, but was thought they wanted to keep it suitable for the family. NY Night Market (313@somerset)

Isaac Toast Singapore
Plaza Singapura #B2-42, 68 Orchard Road Singapore 238839
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm Daily

Probably the most popular Korean Toast from Seoul itself, Isaac Toast’s first outlet in Singapore is located at Plaza Singapura Basement 2.

The varieties include Double Spicy Cutlet ($6.90), Bulgogi MVP ($6.50), Bulgalbi MVP ($6.50), Hot Chicken MVP ($6.50), Shrimp MVP ($6.90), Hot Tteokgalbi MVP ($6.50), Bacon Best ($4.90), Steak Ham ($5.90), and Ham Special ($4.90).

Prices listed are for ala carte order, and a set with a drink of Americano, Green Tea, or Earl Grey is at $2 extra.

As I have eaten Isaac Toast quite a number of times (even in other cities), I thought that the Singapore version was decent but won’t be that impressionable if this is my first time having it.

Somehow, the proportion of ingredients and sauces over in Korea feel just right, with elements nuances of sweetness and spiciness, and refreshing sliced cabbage. Isaac Toast Singapore (Plaza Singapura)

Egg Stop
60 Paya Lebar Road, Paya Lebar Square, #01-62 Singapore 409051 (Paya Lebar MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

“Is this the Egg Drop we saw in Korea?”, as passersby were sceptical and mumbling to themselves.

One’s Egg Drop, this is Egg Stop.

Not seeing double, Egg Stop is a local kiosk that offers “Korean sandwich shack with an influence of American style breakfast comfort food”.

There are so many similarities between Korea’s Egg Drop and Singapore’s Egg Stop, from the concept of American-styled toast to the different options on the menu and the white takeaway packaging.

Flavours include Signature Sandwich ($4.60), Chicken Ham & Cheese (4.90), Turkey Bacon & Cheese ($5.50), Smoked Chicken ($5.90), Beef Teriyaki ($7.40) and Avocado & Egg ($7.90).

My favourite is the Beef Teriyaki ($7.40) with thinly sliced marinated beef torched for smokiness, teriyaki sauce, caramelised onion, mayonnaise and a single raw egg yolk.

Korea’s better lah. Egg Stop (Paya Lebar)

KToast Sandwich & Coffee
Grantral Mall #01-23 (Cityvibe Clementi) Commonwealth Ave West Singapore 129581 (Clementi MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm (Mon – Sun)

The shop serves up “authentic Korean Toasts”, with a Korean chef behind the recipes and working in the kitchen. The chef is said to be recruited from Myeongdong and is a certified barista.

The sauces used are also imported from Korea, with ONE secret sauce created by the chef.

Items offered by the new KToast include the original Ktoast – which includes ham, egg and cheese ($2.90), Bacon Toast ($3.90), Bulgogi Toast ($4.90), Chicken Toast ($4.90) and Potato Toast ($3.90).

I was recommended to try the Hot Bulgogi Toast ($4.90). True enough, a Korean chef was working meticulously, pan-frying the ingredients and assembling the toast together.

In terms of packaging and varieties offered, KToast does remind us of Isaac Toast.

There were some elements that I liked – that it was freshly made and piping hot; that thinly shredded cabbage was added to balance off the ‘heatiness’; and both the bread and egg were fluffy. KToast (Clement)

52 Sandwich Shack
Raffles City Shopping Centre, 252 North Bridge Road, #B1-54, Singapore 179103
Tel: +65 6920 2922
Opening Hours: 8.30am – 10pm (Mon to Fri), 10.30am – 10pm (Sat & Sun)

Located at Raffles City, this is a takeaway kiosk which specializes in making stretchy cheese sandwich.

Using brioche bread, the sandwiches are toasted till golden brown before being served. There are variants of cheese sandwiches offering, ranging from plain to hearty meat fillings.

While technically, this is not a Korean sandwich shop, they do offer a Annyeong Fried Chikin – fried chicken drizzled with kimchi and filled generously with fried egg, mayonnaise and coral lettuce. 52 Sandwich Shack (Raffles City)

10 Best NEW Cafes In Singapore

Apartment Coffee
161 Lavender Street #01-12 Singapore 338750
Opening Hours: 9am – 6pm (Mon – Tues, Thurs – Sun), Closed Wed

Beautiful White Cafe That Makes You Feel Like Home
This specialty coffee place at Lavender Street is called “Apartment” because the owner wanted to create the vibes of inviting people home, to have chats with coffee lovers at the counter seats, and for them to feel welcomed.

I think a lot of instagrammers will start heading here, because the café fulfils many requirements needed for those ‘mood’ and ‘got-feel’ shots – natural daylight, white space, Scandinavian furniture, locally-designed ceramic cups.

I was recommended the Colombia La Falda ($6.50), a single origin with notes of plum, redcurrant and grapefruit.

It was indeed a well-balanced, refreshing cup with that obvious fruitiness that made a good perk-me-up. Apartment Coffee (Lavender Street)

Hvala CHIJMES
CHIJMES, 30 Victoria Street, Singapore 187996
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/HvalaSingapore/

Japanese Cafe & Teahouse Hidden Within CHIJMES
A Japanese teahouse located within the walls of the 19th-century built chapels at CHIJMES.

The space has a minimalist touch with wooden elements incorporated into every single details, yet brought out the beauty and the simplicity in the design. (Reminds me of Peace Oriental Teahouse from Bangkok.)

The tea apparatus and tableware are all neatly displayed at the bar counter, from the mini stone mill grinder, pour over apparatus, tea scoop to the whisk.

This is probably the best spot to witness all the actions and effort in preparing every cup of tea. They have recently expanded their space, and certainly feels more “zen” now.
Hvala (CHIJMES)

Clan Café
31 Bukit Pasoh Road Singapore 089845
Tel: +65 6320 9180
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sat), Closed Sun

Perhaps The Most Beautiful Café To Open This Year
Clan Café is located on the ground floor of Straits Clan – a members’ only club; and the space used to house New Majestic Hotel.

It was indeed a space I liked immediately upon walking in, actually from the moment I saw the Instagram account – and this is when reality looked as pleasant as the gallery on social media.

Designed by local firm Takenouchi Webb, there were the tropical elements that would make you want to sip on a Pina Colada, yet it felt classy enough to be able to hold a quick business meet-up.

My friend thought there were parts that reminded her of a beautiful and welcoming living room. Clan Café (Bt Pasoh)

Columbus Coffee Co.
220 Upper Thomson Rd Thomson Garden Estate, Singapore 574352
Phone: +65 6253 6024
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Tues – Sat), 9am – 7pm (Sun), Closed Mon

Popular Upper Thomson Café By Team Behind Atlas and Lunar
By the team behind Atlas Coffeehouse at Bukit Timah and Lunar Coffee Brewers at Downtown Gallery, Columbus Coffee Co is relatively new but very well received.

It is a bold step to open a new café in an area already swarming with a dozen others, but it definitely stands out. You should find yourself liking the general vibe as soon as you step in. It has a spacious seating area, looking chic and neat.

There are no so-called recommended items, but some dishes that appealed included Mushrooms on Sourdough ($14), Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($14.50), Mussels with Coconut Lemongrass & Ale ($17), Heart Meatballs On Toast ($18), Brown Butter Sardine Crumb Pasta ($18), to sweets of Butterscotch Banana Pancake ($18.50), Peanut Butter & Berries ($14) and Earl Grey Caramel Waffle ($12.50).

The Summer Chicken Stew ($18) seemed like an obvious choice.

This dish had a slight Asian-take as it reminded me of a home-cooked meal with roasted potatoes and carrots, except that the gravy was not as creamy as I imagined. Columbus Coffee Co. (Upper Thomson)

Five Oars Coffee Roasters
39 Tanjong Pagar Road Singapore 088462 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Melbourne Inspired Cafe With Loads Of Brunch Items
Five Oars Coffee Roasters along Tanjong Pagar Road is said to be Melbourne-café inspired.

It certainly looks attractive (ie instagrammable) from the outside, with effective use of greens and a square-shaped seating arranging to create an illusion of space.

For the menu, there is an extensive list of brunch items, followed by a couple of pastas and rice bowls. The recommended items included Cured Ocean Trout ($22.50), Strawberry Avocado ($18.00), Mentaiko Mac & Cheese ($20.50); while its dinner menu offers Beef Wellington ($32.00) and Duck Gnocchi ($21.00).

However, the price is towards the expensive side. It certainly got a lot of attention from bloggers during the opening days, but think it can have a more enticing menu to keep people talking and coming back. Five Oars Coffee Roasters (Tanjong Pagar)

Halcyon & Crane
Paragon Level 3 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 9727 5121
Opening Hours: 9am – 10 pm (Mon – Sun)

Western Meets Sichuan Food In The Heart Of Orchard
Halcyon & Crane brings about Western-meets-Sichuan café-style dining and drinking at Orchard Paragon.

Its food is modern European with Sichuan influence, and has a well-designed chic and serene pavilion concept where you can take a break after all that shopping.

Some of their signature items include King’s Chicken Hash Benedict ($21) of English muffins topped with gong bao chicken, sous-vide egg and Cheddar cheese; Beetroot & Seafood Risotto ($32) made with Japanese pearl rice and given a touch of spice from pickled chilli; Baby Chicken Roulade ($32); and Chicken & Mushroom Capellini ($23), a nourishing soup of chicken and bamboo mushrooms with quality vermicelli noodles imported from Sichuan. Halcyon & Crane (Orchard Paragon)

Liberty Coffee Bar
387 Jalan Besar Singapore 209002
Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm (Tues – Thurs), 10am – 8pm (Fri), 9am – 6pm (Sat), Closed Sun, Mon, PH

Popular Cafe Is Back After 4 Years
After 4 years of absence, the NEW Liberty Coffee Bar is back and located at 387 Jalan Besar, steps away from Kam Leng Hotel.

Other than its signature coffee blends, there is a “simple but focused” food menu consisting of pastas, sandwiches and finger foods.

Unfortunately, the previously-popular Lemon Poppy Cake and Gular Melaka Café won’t be available anymore.

Offerings include Rodeo Hero Sandwich ($14) with Angus beef and homemade bacon & onion jam; Hot Butt Sub ($13) filled with Cubano-style pork hind; Ragu on Ribbons ($15) – a papardelle pasta in rich tomato-based beef & pork sauce; and Blue & Shells ($13) – pasta shells cooked with Gorgonzola cheese.

Good to have you back, Liberty. Liberty Coffee Bar (Jalan Besar)

Bearded Bella
8 Craig Road, Singapore 089668 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 7.30am – 5pm (Mon-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/beardedbella/

Melbourne Inspired Cafe At Tanjong Pagar
Melbourne-inspired brunch fare, white and spacious interior, glass rooftop with natural sunlight, are some of the promising pull factors for Bearded Bella – the promising brunch and coffee place at Craig Road.

The name may sound catchy: union of a Bearded man and a Bella, which represents the fun and quirkiness here.

A selection of healthy-looking breakfast items such as Toast, Chia Pudding, Smashed Avocado and brunch food such as Dill Cured Salmon, the Bearded Egg and Pulled Brisket Sliders are available.
Bearded Bella (Craig Road)

Benjamin Barker Café
8 Grange Road, #01-01, Cineleisure, Singapore 239695 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6732 2123
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Sun – Thurs), 10am – 12mn (Fri – Sat)

Popular Menswear Label Opens Stylish Café
Some may not know that the fashion label is a home-grown brand, with the name inspired by the expression “Benjamin Generation” – a prophetic name which implies astounding blessings.

One thing distinct about their stores is the thought put into the interior, as though you are walking into someone’s house, designed like a living room.

The Cineleisure Orchard clothing store is decorated with keepsakes the founder collected during his travels, and the vintage typewriter from London was the same one used when he proposed to his wife.

What appealed to me were the neon words of “It is swell with my soul.” – a clever play of words on a famous hymn. Benjamin Barker Café (Orchard Cineleisure)

Birdy’s
215F Upper Thomson Road Singapore 574349
Opening Hours: 10am – 11pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs), 10am – 12am (Fri), 8am – 12am (Sat), 8am – 4pm (Sun)

Under-Rated Café With Decent Brunch Items
Birdy’s is a newly-opened neighbourhood kitchen and bar at 215F Upper Thomson, which serves up breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, wines, craft beers and everything in between.

The strange name of “Birdy’s” comes from a fictional character who is peckish is all day, and the shop’s objective is to provide quality without the frills.

Its menu is divided into Day and Night, with the evening menu comprising of recommended dishes such as Charred Cauliflower “Steak” ($15) with semidried tomatoes, chives and hazelnut beurre noisette; Slow Cooked Pork ($25) of 12 hours braised pork belly in kecap manis, served with duck fat potatoes.

I would recommend the Eggs On Toast ($9). Not many cafes (even restaurants) in Singapore do the ‘simple’ Scrambled Eggs well, but Birdy’s got it just right in terms of the consistency, creaminess and fluffiness. Birdy’s (Upper Thomson)

Harry Potter Café In Hongdae Seoul
Potterheads may just want to apparate to the new 943 Kings Cross Harry Potter themed café, right smack in the heart of Hongdae – the popular hangout spot for Korean youths.

Your enchanted experience comes at a cost though, the staff will only allow people into the cafe batch by batch.

The atmosphere coupled with the down-to-dust detailed decorations doesn’t make this just a café, but an experience.

Every single corner was decorated carefully, and I was impressed by their impeccable detail. The chandeliers, the chess sets and even books related to Harry Potter.

However, let’s not kid anyone as we all know that people don’t come here for the coffee and food. 943 Kings Cross (Hongdae, Seoul)

Korean Café Inspired By The Comic Fantasy World Of “W”
This is one café that would make you feel like you stepped into a comic book, and to be more precise – a webtoon.

Called “CAFE 연남동 239-20” or “CAFE Yeonnam-dong 239-20”, it is simply named after its address.

There are two sections of the café – the outside with garden-like, relaxing vibes; and the inside which is styled like a comic book (the design extends all the way till the washroom).

The menu is lean, with signature drinks such as the W Coffee (6,000 Won), W Salty Latte (6,000 Won), Vanilla Café Latte (5,000 Won), Choco Choco Latte (5,000 Won) and Green Tea Latte (5,000 Won). That is between SGD6.10 (USD4.50) and SGD7.35 (USD5.40).

Photos of its black and white interior have made their way across varied social media platforms such as Instagram, but it is hard to imagine that it is just a 20-seater, single-handledly managed by one person. CAFE 연남동 239-20 (Hongdae, Seoul)

Fabulously Pink Café, Dine By The Indoor Pool
Decorated in perfectly delicate pink shades, the Pink Pool Cafe is a slice of girly paradise. (While you are here, the other popular pink café is Zapangi 자판기, also known as the pink vending machine café.)

Situated in both Seoul’s hip Hongdae and Myeongdong district, the premises have a dual function – as a cafe selling picture perfect sweet treats, and as a makeup and fashion store.

Trendsetters and coffee lovers can enjoy a drink and a snack from the cafes extensive menu.

The Pink Pool Café serves up a pretty menu of drinks from Shakes, Tea, Ade, to “Diet” drinks of Real Tomato Juice, Lemon Detox Water, Coconut Juice and Burdock Tea (6500 Won – 7000 Won, SGD7.90 – 8.50) for the health-conscious, considered slightly above the usual café pricing. Pretty In Pink Café Hidden Behind A Vending Machine
Zapangi, with its neon pink vending machine entrance is one that has quickly captured the hearts of Seoulites and expats in the city, both of whom will line up patiently outside so as to capture the perfect shot.

The name “Zapangi 자판기” meaning “vending machine” in Korean, is situated in Seoul’s Mangwon-dong, a hip up-and-coming neighbourhood filled with artisan hangouts, microbreweries and independent boutiques.

The cafe’s tagline is “bottles and tins” and this is reflected in its simple presentation – cold beverages are served in milk style glass bottles, cakes are served in tins.

Its “tin cakes” are served in perfectly polished metal tins with cute printed stickers that point towards what is inside.

The adorable confectionaries sold are often incredibly intricate and visually appealing – for example, cupcakes designed to look like a mermaid is diving inside. Zapangi 자판기 (Mapo-gu, Seoul)

Creative & Retro Looking Cafe Converted From A Mansion
Coffee by a barista champion, freshly-baked pastries, a café inside a converted mansion with a courtyard garden.

Finding Fritz Coffee Company may be slightly tricky, but once you get through the wooden doors into the tile-roofed house, you would feel like you are transported to olden-days of Korea.

They have an extensive selection of single-origin pour-overs to choose from (5000 Won, 7000 Won), as well as Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino, Latte, Vanilla Latte and Caffe Mocha (4200 Won – 5000 Won).

Bread is another key feature of the café, baked in-house daily, filling the space with buttery fragrance. Fritz Coffee Company (Mapo-gu, Seoul)

Spells “Industrial Chic” All Over
The Seongsu area around Seoul Forest has earned the reputation of being the “Brooklyn of Seoul”, with cafes such as Daelim Warehouse, Zagmachi, or.er, Café Cow&Dog being hangout places for the hip and young Koreans.

Café Onion itself which has fast become a popular landmark of the area, is converted from a metal factory. It was previously a supermarket and restaurant, built in the 1970s.

Food wise, Cafe Onion serves up bread from the famed Bread 05 Bakery, with over 20 varieties to choose from all freshly baked in-house.

The most popular choice would be the Pandoro (5,000 Won), an Italian-style bread covered in powdered sugar. Café Onion (Seongsu-dong, Seoul)

Hidden Café Behind Refrigerator Doors
Unknown to most people (tourists at least), Jean Frigo 장프리고 which lies amongst a row of shops in Dongdaemun, looks like an unassuming fruit stall from the outside.

But beyond those metallic doors, are not your cold-storage food and kimchi, but an entrance that leads to a café-pub.

When you open the doors, you feel as though you found an entirely different world. The kind of the feeling if you get to open Narnia’s wardrobe.

While Seoul has no lack of instagrammable cafes, the idea of a hidden ‘world’ behind a fridge door would attract a number of instagrammers down.

Even if you are not into fruit juices, I would recommend you coming here for their cocktails as well. Jean Frigo 장프리고 (Jung-gu, Seoul)

For those who are unaware, Kakao has become Korea’s number 1 mobile messenger operator, and this outlet located in the heart of Gangnam is the flagship store.

There are 3 stories which feature the popular characters of Ryan, Muzi, Apeach in various toys, clothes and accessories.

Many are also there for the Ryan Cafe, serving up desserts such as Strawberry Cake (3,500 Won), Cupcake (6,500 Won), Strawberry Ice Cream (3,500 Won) to drinks of Green tea Latte (4,500 Won) and Citrus Grapefruit Ade (5,000 Won).

Sheep Cafe at Hongdae Seoul, For A Baa-Baa-ry Good Time
Located close to the Hongik University’s campus in the trendy neighborhood of Hongdae, Thanks Nature Café 땡스 네이쳐 카페 or also known as the Sheep Café is the only place in Seoul where you can eat banana-strawberry waffles in the company of two fluffy sheep.

They were kept in a sheep pen that is separated from the Thanks Nature Café, so you do not have to worry about sharing your fruit soda with them.

However, there was the ‘smell of nature’ which I did not quite mind. Thanks Nature Café (Hong Dae, Seoul)

Gorgeous Cake Café Known For Avocado Cake
With a concept of “Creative Dessert Box”, this is a dessert café and baking studio co-owned by Patissier Eun Ah Lee, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu London and previously worked at Hyatt Regency and Maman Gateaux.

Cakes are freshly baked and prepared, and available in limited quantities. Therefore, the popular ones run out fast, and you might want to arrive earlier in the day.

I was really there for the UNAS Avocado (9,000 Won), and did not take long to zoom in straight.

The dessert arrived simply, looking just like an avocado on a while plate. Ah, the shells are made of real avocados. But it is what goes on inside that got me curious.

As I dug in with the spoon, you would feel the smoothness of the avocado mousse; beneath it was lemon baked cheesecake, and mango & yuzu jelly. UNAS 우나스 (Gangnam, Seoul)

Powder Workshop Café – Famous For The Milo Mountain, Quaint Café At Taipei Near Yong Kang Street

$

0

[Taipei] Yong Kang Street in Taipei is known for its many charming cafes from YABOO Café, Elephant Machine, and Xiao Mijiu.

However, you can also make a short walk of about 10 minutes to get to Powder Workshop Café, which is also worth a visit.

Located close to East Gate Market and Dongmen Station, Powder Workshop Café is a comfortable place, a quiet café with a laid-back atmosphere.

It is also an ideal spot for people who are looking to get some work done, as it has plenty of power outlets and offers free Wi-Fi.

One side of this café in Taipei is reserved for the kitchen bar that features large coffee machines, while the other side is the guest area where you can unwind with a tasty cup of coffee or some comforting brunch food.

The interior can be best described as modern with a light wooden texture and simple Nordic arrangement. Its ceiling-to-floor windows offers plenty of natural light during the day

In case you wish to see how fresh coffee is prepared, you can sit on one of the bar stools. There are also several wooden tables with chairs available.

On its lean menu, expect to find brunch food such as Smoked Ham and Cheese Toast (TWD310), Cod Roe Baguette (TWD320), Smoked Chicken Baguette (TWD320), Egg Salad and Peanut Butter Sandwich (TWD330) and Smoked Ham with Mustard Sandwich (TWD340).

That is about SGD13.80 to SGD15.20 (USD10 to USD11).

What I was really there for was its Milo Mountain (TWD170, SGD7.58), which has made its round on Instagram.

They described it as a “Traditional Malaysian drink” added with their own twist of malt sugar, created to look like a little mountain suitable for summer.

This drink is certainly not cheap, considering that a cup of Milo back home comes at a fraction of the price.

But to be honest, there was a new interpretation and the powdered milo, smooth milo and layer of chocolate coating outside worked well.

I wished it was a bigger cup though, so that it would not feel that ‘heaty’.

Other popular drinks include Matcha Latte (TWD180) and Yuzu Honey Matcha (TWD190).

While “brown sugar” drinks have only started to gain traction in other parts of Asia, Taipei has been offering such drinks since years ago.

You can also find Brown Sugar Cream Americano (TWD160), Brown Sugar Coffee Latte (TWD160), and Brown Sugar Cream Tea (TWD170) offered here.

Pair with one of their signature cakes, such as the fragrant and light Tie Guan Yin Cheese Cake (TWD150), Banana Cake (TWD130) and Lemon Tart (TWD130).

Compared to some of the other more touristy food places across at Yong Kang Street, you may find some peace and quite time here, a great way to unwind or catch up with some reading.

Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園 – Cha Chaan Teng Famous For HK Milk Tea And Pork Chop Buns, At Hong Kong Central

[Hong Kong] When you talk about a “must-visit” Hong Kong cafe aka cha chaan teng in Hong Kong, Lan Fong Yuen蘭芳園 would be a shoo-in due to its historical significance.

You find tourists aimed with guide books and cameras, taking loads of food photos and selfies, making it one of the possible top 10 Hong Kong food destinations for first-timers.

Opened back in 1953, Lan Fong Yuen is one of the oldest and most famous cha chaan teng in Hong Kong, where you can experience the old-school vibes and bustling energy. (For those who not know, a cha chaan teng is practically a basic Hong Kong breakfast place.

They are also said to be the creator of the pantyhose milk tea (wonder how they even got it started) so it is the must-have here, even if it may not be the best around the city.

Lan Fong Yuen’s main branch is located on Gage Street, and there is another found at Kowloon side at the basement of Chung King Mansion at Tsim Sha Tsui.

The nearest MTR station for the main outlet is Central. Come out from Exit G and go for a short walk towards Queen’s Road Central. Once you cross to the opposite side of the road, turn left to D’Aguilar Road.

Continue walking until you reach the Wellington Street. Make a left turn into Lyndhurst Terrace and soon you’ll reach Gage Street where Lan Fong Yuen is located.

The café started as a ‘Dai Pai Dong’, thus the inconspicuous shop entrance.

You are likely to walk past and miss it. Look for the shop sign ‘Lan Fong Yuen’ and walk all the way inside. Don’t assume it is closed even though it looks like it.

The interior of this Hong Kong eatery is as nostalgic as it gets – crowded, possibly claustrophobic for some. The likelihood of you sharing a table with strangers is very high.

You will be passed a menu. Tip: Be sure what you want to order, don’t make changes, don’t hesitate. Be quick and swift before the server shows signs of impatience.

Lan Fong Yuen is most famous for two items: Pork Chop Burger (HKD36) and ‘Silk Stockings’ Milk Tea (HKD21 for hot, HKD23 for iced).

The other recommended dishes include French Toast (HKD32), Condensed Milk Bun with Butter (HKD32), Chicken Chop with Instant Noodles (HK38). There is also the strange-tasting Salty Lime 7-Up (HKD25).

While I suspect that the Pork Chop Burger may not be the best in the city, it is still worthy to get for that tender, juicy, yet thin slab of pork chop in the middle.

I found the bun slightly dry for my liking, and had trouble finishing it all together.

The other signature food item is the Chicken Chop with Instant Noodles (HKD38), a fuss-free dish made more appetising with the addition of scallion oil and addictive soy-base sauce.

The chicken chop, was also done well here, nicely pan-fried and moist to the bite.

As for the Hong Kong Milk Tea (HKD21 for hot, HKD23 for iced), it made a suitable thirst-quencher without an overly strong bitter tea taste, though I wished it was milkier and less diluted.

Not the best, but okay.

Coffee Lover’s Planet – Over 20 Coffee Options And 7 Brewing Methods, “Hidden” At Taipei’s Pacific Sogo Mall

$

[Taipei] Perhaps you may not venture to the basement of the Pacific Sogo Mall in Da’an district, but you can actually find two gems there – one’s the famous Sarabeth’s 紐約早餐女王 known for its brunch dishes and pancakes; the other is Coffee Lover’s Planet.

Unlike the typical coffee chains found in malls, Coffee Lover’s Planet offers over 20 different coffee options that range from fruity to bitter and light to strong.

Coffee connoisseurs will be happy to hear that the selection and quality of coffee here is note-worthy, and that you can choose the brewing method for each cup of coffee that you order.

Did I mention 7 different brewing methods?

Other than the usual espresso, they offer drip master, pour over, cold brew, water drip, siphon, French press.

Coffee is generally characterised into Africa (bright, acidic, fruity, medium body), Asia (earthy, chocolaty, sweet, heavy bodied) and America (mild and balanced, nutty/spicy, mild acidity).

Really something for everyone.

What I like about Coffee Lover’s Planet is that the description of each type of beans is written on a small card.

All you need to do is to turn the card over and you will see a little mark on a printed world map to let you know from where the bean comes from.

The only downside of Coffee Lover’s Planet is that the coffee prices reflect the quality of their products, which means that coffees are quite expensive and range between TWD220 – TWD450 (SGD9.80 to SGD20.00, USD7.10 USD14.60).

The most ‘affordable’ coffee you can get there is a Single Origin Espresso at TWD180 (SGD8, USD5.80).

If you are not sure what type of coffee to order, the waiters are always more than happy to make a recommendation for you.

There is also a small area where you can buy coffee related products.

For early risers, come before 12pm and get one of their brunch sets such as Dark Rye Toast, Three Cheese Tuna Melt Open Sandwich, or Avocado Shrimp and Apple Honey Bruschetta, priced between TWD280 to TWD320 with coffee.

There is a small cake selection with offerings of Rose Framboises (TWD 175), Mousse and Trois Chocolate (TWD160), Tarte Myrtille (TWD195), and Tarte Citron (TWD150).

While its coffee is generally on the expensive side, it is not common to be presented with a choice of such an extensive list of coffee choices from all over the world; and service is personable enough to lead through the process.

So it is not just about drink that cup of coffee anymore, but the experience.

[Taipei] Other than popular Bubble Teas shops and fruit juice stores, Taipei is also known for its quaint and indie coffee houses. Many of them are helmed by award-winning baristas.

The one distinguishing factor about cafes in Taipei, is the calming and peaceful environment, best described as “文青”.

I can’t find an English equivalent, but you often find the Taiwanese hanging out with a book at hand, or engaging in quiet conversations – probably discussing about politics, the arts and occasional gossips.

There appears to be a lack of English websites featuring these Taipei cafes as well. Armed with recommendations from friends and Chinese guidebooks / websites, here are 12 Must-Go Cafes In Taipei.

Scandinavian Style Cafe In Taipei By Award-Winning Barista
Located in Zhongshan, Fika Fika Café is an award-winning Scandinavian-style café that specializes in Nordic single-origin Aeropress-brewed coffee.

The café’s owner is famous for being the winner in both espresso and roasting categories at the popular Nordic Barista Cup in 2013.

This naturally-lit café is furnished with pinewood chairs and tables, with an open-style kitchen that allows customers and baristas to interact.

The café is also known for its Brown Sugar Latte (TWD200, SGD8.90) which provided this tinge of caramelised sweetness without overriding the coffee component. A lovely drink.

Other stand-out drinks are the Cube Latte (TWD250, SGD11.60) with frothed warm milk poured over ice coffee cubes; and Espresso Sparkling (TWD200, SGD8.90).

Prices are on the slight-expensive side if you compare to other cafés in Taipei. Fika Fika Café (Zhongshan District, Taipei)

Lifestyle Hipster Cafe Among Greenery, At Fujin Street Taipei
Fujin Street 富錦街 located at Minsheng Community 民生社區 is lined with trees, and better known as Fujin Tree Street 富錦樹街.

Selection of food is limited though. You can choose from a Pork Ham with Coby Jack Cheese and Salad Sandwich (TWD190, SGD8.40), or Salami with Coby and Salami with Coby Jack Cheese and Salad (TWD190, SGD8.40).

Popular dessert choices would be the Castella (TWD190, SGD8.40), Tiramisu (TWD220, SGD9.80) and Green Tea Roll Cake (TWD170, SGD7.50).

My first impression of Fujin Tree Café was its leafy and shadowy exterior that made for a great flatlay of food (Sorry, instagrammer talk).

Every part of the cafe had been carefully designed, and attention was paid to details.

Otherwise, just sip on some Okinawan coffee while people watching. FYI, café owner Berg Wu is the Barista Champion of Taiwan in 2014. Fujin Tree 353 富錦樹咖啡 (Fujin Street, Taipei)

Cafe By World Barista Champion In Taipei
The Lobby of Simple Kaffa was founded by 2016’s World Barista Champion Berg Wu – the first person from Taiwan to win the World Barista Championship.

It was on my to-go list, also because of the irresistible Matcha Swiss roll with oozing matcha in the centre.

Even though The Lobby of Simple Kaffa is located within the East District (東區), a popular shopping district for young and hipsters, the premise is tucked away at the basement of design Hotel V.

I had the Caramel Latte (TWD170 Hot/ TWD180 Iced, SGD8 Hot/ SGD8.40 Cold) which was smooth, rich with distinct caramel notes.

The highlight was definitely the Matcha Swiss Roll (TWD140 dine-in/ TWD180 takeaway, SGD6.50 dine-in/ SGD8.40 takeaway), made using Morihan Kyoto Uji Matcha powder known for its premium grade quality.

It was light and airy, with oozing matcha in the centre that made me go “Oishii”! The Lobby of Simple Kaffa (Dunhua South, Taipei)

Creative Coffee from Award-Winning Barista
Located at Songshan District near Zhongshan Junior High School station, GaBee is a café with a big declaration, “We do everything about coffee.”

True enough, it offers coffee in different brewing styles, ingredients, and presentation.

Van Lin has won several awards and was the first barista from Taiwan to compete in the World Barista Championship (WBC).

Known for Van Lin’s award-winning beverage Sweet Potato Coffee, GaBee lets you enjoy this drink for TWD130 (SGD5.86).

It’s Taiwan’s answer to the Pumpkin Spice Latte of the west. Combining sweet potato paste with frothed milk and espresso, it’s topped with whipped cream, potato chip, coffee bean and sweet potato slivers.

Van Lin describes it as more of a dessert, a fusion of a familiar homeland flavor with foreign influences.

It is also an ideal spot for people who are looking to get some work done, as it has plenty of power outlets and offers free Wi-Fi.

What I was really there for was its Milo Mountain (TWD170, SGD7.58), which has made its round on Instagram.

Daily Limited Earl Grey Crème Brulee With Pour Over Coffee
A small cozy coffee store located in the quaint neighbourhood of Wanhua district. I liked how they put in effort in curating their space – from the lush greenery exterior to simple yet comfortable interior.

Monga carries a variety of single origin coffee beans used for pour over, price ranging from TWD120 to TWD250 (SGD5.50 to SGD11.50).

They also do their own coffee roasting, and generally kept their coffee beans lightly roasted.

The other highlight would be their signature dessert named as 倉豆花丸 (TWD70, SGD3.20) but was in fact Earl Grey Crème Brûlée.

Available daily in limited quantity, I liked how the jiggly dessert had texture similar to ‘tau huey’ (beancurd), but infused with earl grey tea fragrance. Monga Coffee Roasters 丸花豆倉 (Wanhua District, Taipei)

Located at Taipei Neihu District, the coffee store is found right next to his production studio. However, this may not be entirely convenient for overseas fans to pay a visit.

A cup of Latte/Cappuccino cost TWD95 (SGD4.40), Espresso/Americano at TWD75 (SGD3.50) and Hand Drip at TWD100 (SGD4.60).

The baristas are happy to share everything there is to know about the coffee making process. Expect to hear soft Jazz music in the background while watching the baristas prepare your cup of coffee.

I flipped to the first page of the coffee menu. 18 different types of Pour Over Coffee, with beans from Costa Rica, Panama to Burundi. Amazing at how they are dedicated to their craft.

They serve up two types of cheesecake, a New York Cheesecake (TWD100, SGD4.50) provided by Little Explosions Sweets Studio; and a Baked Tea Cheeecake (TWD90, SGD4.00) making a suitable pairing with coffee with its non-rich texture and delicate tea fragrance. Popular Marble Cube Cake And Marble Cheese Cake
One of Taipei’s most instagrammable dessert café of late has to be Sugar Miss, with photos of their famed Marble Cube Cake trending in several social media feeds (at least the Chinese ones).

Each is priced about TWD240 – 265 (SGD10.80 – SGD11.90), considered on the higher side for Taiwan, though Singaporeans should be used to these prices for cakes.

While the top molten layer looked melty, it was solidified and didn’t add much taste wise. Beneath was a chiffon layer and raspberry fillings that didn’t quite flow at all.

Unfortunately, taste wise, it wasn’t the most impressive. It was OKAY. Sugar Miss (Da’an District, Taipei)

Tamed Fox is known to offer nutritious yet tasty food. Their motto is, “Eat well and heal thy self”.

Food options include Sandwich (TWD260-300, SGD12.10-14), Salmon Belly/ Baked Chicken Bowl (TWD330, SGD15.50) and Greek Yogurt (TWD150, SGD7), which make such attractive food options after a workout session.

Also available are Power Fruit Bowl (TWD180, SGD8.10), Banana Bread (TWD80, SGD3.60), and Flourless Brownie (TWD100, SGD4.50).

The Doughnuts (TWD80, SGD3.80) interestingly tasted slightly different from the norm.

It almost felt like having a carrot cake in the form of a doughnut, with tiny bits of shredded carrots found within, coupled with cinnamon. Tamed Fox (Ren’ai Road, Taipei)

The Ruins Come To Life At Taipei’s Best Kept Secret Café
Ruins Coffee Roaster is hidden behind a lamp post, along a stretch of almost ruined shophouses, and you may inadvertently walk pass without noticing its frontage.

Ruins terms themselves as a “Café Junkie X Leisure Café”.

Like most coffee roasters in Taipei, expect just coffee to be served with a wide range of Single Origin (all 11 of them) and Cold Brew. Lattes and hand drips are from TWD130 (SGD5.50) – TWD 200 (SGD9).

The café has recently found a resident baker to complement their brews.

The cakes go for around TWD130 (SGD5.50) a slice. The most popular dessert was the light and fluffy Strawberry Chiffon, though I also spotted an interest Maple Syrup Bacon Cupcake.

I found it an opportunity to take a more relaxing and reflective holiday, taking a scenic walk down the river banks. Ruins Coffee Roaster 小廢墟咖啡 (Wenshan District, Taipei)

Hototogisu Ramen – Michelin-Starred Ramen From Tokyo, Offering Unique Oyster Ramen At Great World City

Great World City has finally undergone a revamp, and looks set to welcome a couple of NEW F&B tenants include Tim Ho Wan, Din Tai Fung, Marvx Coffee Bar, Imperial Treasure Steamboat, Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken, Four Seas Fish Grill, and Hototogisu Ramen.

Hototogisu Ramen will probably get some of the limelight, as it is one of the first to open at the new wing.

Its parent shop – Sobahouse Kiniro Hototogisu 金色不如帰 from Tokyo was just awarded a Michelin Star in the Tokyo Michelin Guide.

Its first store in Singapore Konjiki Hototogisu located at CHIJMES, has received quite positive feedback, known for its base cooked using Hamaguri clams and pork broth.

What distinguishes the Great World City outlet is the introduction of “Oyster Ramen”, exclusive to this branch.

There are two versions for this – the clear soup based Oyster Shio Ramen ($15.90) and Oyster Paitan Ramen ($15.90) with creamier broth.

The broth is said to be prepared by slow-cooking oyster consommé at a lower temperature for a number of hours, then added with roasted paprika for a more invigorating base.

When the Oyster Shio Ramen ($15.90) was presented, I noticed many elements going on, from Oyster Paste, Oyster Oil, Wild Rocket leaves, roasted paprika, red onions to garlic lemon butter.

One bowl, many ways of eating.

There are 4 recommended ways of savouring that bowl: from drinking the Oyster Consommé on its own, to trying the Oyster Oil, Oyster Paste, to mixing in the Garlic Lemon Butter.

This is not like your typical ramen, as the soup had varied layers, and indeed quite exciting to the taste buds. Complex yet coming together balanced.

Also, it didn’t feel that heavy, and I had no trouble finishing the entire bowl.

The weakness, as I previously pointed out before, was its Ajitama Egg which could have been more molten and flavoured.

Some diners may find the noodles cooked soft and limp as well, but I didn’t quite mind it.

If you prefer something creamier with more robust flavours, then get the Oyster Paitan Ramen ($15.90), which I suspect is more suitable for those used to Tonkotsu styles.

I also noted a sliced of baked lemon, and it added this interesting zest.

Other ramen items such as the Tonkotsu Original Ramen ($13.90), Tonkotsu Spicy Ramen ($14.90) and Tonkotsu Smoke and Pepper Ramen ($13.90).

In a market saturated with that many ramen stores, I am glad to find a comforting yet unconventional treat of “Oyster Ramen”.

And if you are wondering if there is any of that ‘fishy’ seafood smell or taste, nope there wasn’t.

A Summer In Paris – Pretty French Patisserie Cafe By Award-Winning Chef Opens In Singapore, At Vivocity

$

0

It has been a while since the opening of Mad About Sucre and Non Entrée Desserts that I got excited over the opening of a cake café.

Don’t get me wrong.

There were some pretty good cake shops introduced in Singapore during the last few years, but few went in the direction of “French Haute-Pattiserie”.

A Summer in Paris is launched at Vivocity, in collaboration with the famous Pastry Chef Yann Brys, awarded the “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” (MOF).

Held once every 4 years, this is France’s highest accolade awarded for expertise and excellence, considered the “holy grail” to be achieved by French pastry chefs.

I read that a French chef hopes for two things, Michelin stars and the MOF.

Only about 200 chefs have been honoured with the title since the competition’s debut during the 1920s. That is how precious the award is.

To find the café, it is located at Level 1 near the drop-off point (Giant Supermarket) at Vivocity.

Loved the interior decorated in colourful pastels, contemporary chic, matched with poster-sized graphics featuring their desserts.

This is where the tai-tais (wannabes) could spend a lazy afternoon, though there are only about 20 seats around.

Some of the recommended items include the Tourbillion Lemon Tart ($8.80) of coconut soft sponge, lemon marmalade, yuzu and lemon curd, yuzu light meringue; Choco’ Dough ($8.80) of almond and milk chocolate crunchy, dulcey cremeux, almond teacake, orange and mandarin marmalade, milk chocolate mousse; and Exotique ($9.30) included with corn flakes crunchy, vanilla teacake, exotic fruits compote, exotic fruits cream and ganache.

When the Tourbillion Fruit’ The ($9.30) was sold out during my first visit, I made it a point to get it without hesitation the next time I went back.

It was an elegant, pretty-in-pink good looker, made of citrus shortbread, jasmine tea sponge, raspberry and grapefruit compote, jasmine tea mousse and lychee cremeux.

Perhaps falling in love with this cake would be fairly easy. Just look at how delicate it looks.

The slightly-tart flavour of the raspberry and grapefruit stood out the most, but the rest of the other components helped balance it out.

I would give my vote to the Pompom ($9.30), striking in appearance looking like a green apple.

On its base is a crumbly citrus shortbread, with the soft green apple cream and jelly adding some subtle sourness which blended well with the sweetness.

The texture itself was very delightful as well.

A Summer in Paris does not disappoint. While prices are on the pricier end, they have the goods with cakes that want to make you fall in love again.

Naganuma Ice – Famous Hokkaido Soft Serve Shop Opens In Singapore, With Crème Brûlée Soft Serve At Tanjong Pagar

Here’s why the fuss: Naganuma Ice’s soft serve is raved for using 100% Hokkaido raw milk, and with queues in Japan and Taiwan that lasts for up to an hour.

It is also the only softserve company from Hokkaido known to use 100% Hokkaido raw milk and Hokkaido ingredients.

The soft serve and gelato shop has opened a kiosk concept store at Carlton City Hotel.

Strange choice of a first location as that is the side that does not get much foot-traffic.

Perhaps they are banking that diners from the Japanese restaurants across at Orchid Hotel would walk over for some desserts after their meal.

Compared to many soft serve shops that offer say maximum of 2 to 3 flavours, there are actually 9 that you can pick from. No twists though.

They include Rich Milk, Matcha, Corn, Yubari Melon, Ebisu Pumpkin, Red Wine, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Aomori Apple.

Priced at $5.00 per cup, $5.50 on a cone. There is also a Singapore-exclusive Crème Brûlée Soft Serve ($8) powdered with sugar at the top, then torched.

I was recommended the Matcha Soft Serve ($5.50), which I thought was a decent treat – smooth, moderately light and milky.

The bitter matcha notes were not too heavy on this, if you were expecting that lingering tea taste.

On the flipside, I thought the soft serve was fairly watery and started melting away as soon as I got my hands on the cone. This is despite the fact that the weather is quite cool of late.

The Yubari Melon was pleasantly not too sweet, though I wished that the melon flavour could be more pronounced.

While I think Naganuma Ice is a not-bad soft serve, there are actually many fairly good brands available – like those in pop-up stores at Meida-ya Supermarket. In fact, Matchaya right across at Icon Village, is not that bad. Yah?

Sugar Thieves – Hole-In-The-Wall Cafe With Strawberry Watermelon Cake, At Kreta Ayer Road

Apart from The Botanist, Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist 基记面家, The Social Space at Kreta Ayer, Sugar Thieves is the latest addition to the Chinatown neighbourhood.

Unlike most other cafes that serves full size brunch menu items, Sugar Thieves focuses on their specialised craft. In this case, their pastries.

With a great variety of presentable sweet treats lined up against the glass window like a well curated dessert table, many passersby cannot help but whipped out their phones to capture an Instagram shot.

There is a certain Melbourne vibe such as natural sunlight, glass window, red-bricked walls, lots of pastries on display that adds the charm to this cosy space.

When I say “cosy”, it also means that there are limited seats here.

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, Australia, the owner Caleen had worked at various established bakeries such as the Black Star Pastry known for its Insta-famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake.

She then started her online baking business for a few years before settling down their central kitchen right here at Kreta Ayer.

True enough, the first dessert that caught my attention was the Strawberry Watermelon Cake ($8,90).

Other choices include Matcha Strawberry Roll ($7.90), Chai Latte Reindeer Tart ($8.90), Sticky Date Bundt ($5.50) , Coffee Frosting on Carrot Bundt Cake ($6.90) and the only savoury item Kimchi Tuna Quiche.

Coffee is provided by Habitat Coffee in the form of 250ml Cold Brew bottles: White ($6.50) and Matcha ($7).

While most matcha drinks come in the form of Matcha Latte (matcha and milk) or Military Matcha (matcha and chocolate), the Matcha Cold Brew ($7) is an uncommon combination of matcha with espresso instead, with smooth and distinctive notes of matcha and coffee in it.

My favourite is the Kimchi Tuna Quiche with a combination of sweet, savoury and spiciness in it, coupled with melted cheese on top.

The pastry is best eaten when it is hot to experience the warm, flaky crust and the flavourful and balanced fillings in it.

If you had previously tried Black Star Pastry’s Strawberry Watermelon Cake, the one at Sugar Thieves had a somewhat similar look and taste, with rosewater infused compressed watermelon that eludes a faint floral taste.

Somehow, I guess working at that famous shop pays off.

The cutest looking pastry goes to the Chai Latte Reindeer Tart ($8.90), made up of chocolate sponge, salted caramel goo and specula’s crumbs to give it a sweet and savoury taste with a crunch.

With a rotating menu every 3 months due to the seasonal produce used, we can expect more tasty bakes from Caleen and her team in the upcoming months.

FlagWhite – Charming Cafe With Brunch And Cakes Made In-House, At Bukit Timah

$

While many hipster cafes around the world are called “Flat White” – named after one of the quintessential styles of 3rd wave coffee, this café located at Bukit Timah is called “FlagWhite”.

Other than the name being a pun on the flat white coffee, it came about when the team of owners almost thought of surrendering aka “raising a white flag”.

Of course, they didn’t.

A couple of years back, the number of such new café openings are a dime in a dozen. While the trend has been stagnant, the opening of a café like FlagWhite is still worth looking forward to.

It is a cosy and homely space nestled in the peaceful Bukit Timah neighbourhood, located opposite Bukit Timah Community Club.

They pride themselves in three things: good coffee, wholesome food, desserts made in-house.

The majority of their products such as coffee, chocolates and tea are sourced from local suppliers and craftspeople, as they believe in supporting local SMEs.

Other than Single Origin Teas ($7), Locally roasted Coffees ($3-7), FlagWhite offers a different Yay Chang Pin single origin espresso from Myanmar.

This is the first harvest of specialty grade coffees from the Yay Chang Pin Specialty Coffee Group.

The coffee is described as “a tropical fruit bomb in sweet strawberry cream”, with notes of pineapples, sweet prunes and dark grapes.

I often find many coffee blends in Singapore too acidic and strong (but it is all personal preference and popularity), so I happen to find this coffee more balanced, pleasant and smooth, while not losing its strength.

Bukit Timah folks who need good coffee know where to head to now.

Food wise, the recommended items are Chicken Parmigiana ($15) of brine breaded chicken, tomato concasse, sautéed mushroom, with mozzarella gouda cheese mix; and Flagwhite Burger ($16) comprising of sunny side egg, streaky bacon, cheddar, beetroot, onion crisp, BBQ aioli, all in a housemade brioche burger bun.

Unfortunately, I headed down during the opening days, and the full menu was not available yet.

Many Singapore cafes source cakes from elsewhere. This may not necessary be a bad thing, just that I see the same cakes surfacing in every other café, which make the place less unique.

Thankfully, FlagWhite also bakes its own cakes.

I would recommend their Signature Double Cheese, light and fluffy, with the cheese component not being overly rich.

Other choices include Single Origin Chocolate Tart with Almond Cream, and Lemon Meringue Tart with Almond Cream.

Interesting trivia: FlagWhite’s logo came about from a love for the whale as a symbol of peace and tranquility, which reflects the ambience and environment we strive to have.

The flag the whale is holding is pointed downwards, as a reminder to never give up, despite all the challenges faced.

Xing Fu Tang 幸福堂 – Popular Brown Sugar Bubble Milk From Taiwan, Use “Traditional” Method To Cook The Pearls

[Taipei] As the brown sugar bubble milk wave is combing across Asia (and even parts of North America), that one brand to look out for is 幸福堂 Xing Fu Tang.

What is especially noteworthy is that 幸福堂 Xing Fu Tang only first opened in Taiwan in January 2018, and has more than 40 stores by the end of the year.

You can find it at various parts of Taipei, from Ximending, Da’an, Jiu Fen, Gong Guan, Shi Da, Rao He Night Market, Shi Lin Night Market, Tong Hua Night Market, Kee Lung Temple, and Taipei Train Station.

They are best known for its “stir-fried” Brown Sugar Boba Milk (NT$55 for iced, NT$65 for hot, SGD2.46 and SGD2.91), with the pearls done the “traditional way”.

The boba pearls are steeped in brown sugar, “stir-fried in front of you, and scooped quickly into the cup.

The server would make turns of the cup so that there would be “tiger stripes” formed on the inside of the cup.

That is not over. After adding milk, cream and sprinkling of brown sugar is included on the top, then torched for a caramelised finished.

Gimmicky, eh?

Verdict. I loved that crisp, caramelised layer so that you can taste bits of brown sugar throughout the drink. I have drunk various versions of the “brûlée” drink, but this is one in which the burnt sugar taste is the most obvious.

Other than that, I didn’t quite fancy the milk part – too creamy and rich.

The pearls were chewy and on the harder side (comparatively), though they had that pleasant brown sugar taste infused within. Though it makes other more tasteless generic-branded boba pearls pale in comparison.

Other Xing Fu Tang signature drinks include Strawberry Boba Milk, Matcha Boba Milk, Grapefruit Green Tea, Brown Sugar Boba Black Tea Latte, Mango Smoothie and “Rabbit” Jelly, and Lemon Black Tea.

I think it is only a matter of time it reaches Singapore.

Tiger Sugar 老虎堂 – Limited Tiger Sugar Milk With Golden Pudding, Opening At Orchard Paragon 12th Jan

[Taipei] Having queued up and bought the trending Tiger Sugar Brown Sugar Bubble Milk a number of times, I wanted to try how it is like from its country of origin.

(You can read about the Singapore outlet here: Tiger Sugar Singapore at Capitol Singapore and 16 Brown Sugar Milk Tea In Singapore.)

The brand originated from Taichung in Taiwan, known for its milk drink added with dark brown sugar syrup, and ‘tiger stripes’ formed a layer of sugar is coated on the inner side of the cup.

I walked past the Taipei Train Station outlet, and joined the line of about 10 people.

While there is always a constant line and delivery orders, the queue cleared fast, say within 5 to 10 minutes.

One thing I noticed was its price, with a drink between NT$40 to NT$55 (SGD1.79 to SGD2.46).

The signature cup is SGD5.30 back home, more than double the price in Taipei. Anyway…

If you are unsure what to get for a first timer, get the Brown Sugar Boba and Pearls Milk with Cream Mousse 虎虎生风厚鲜奶含奶霜,波霸加珍珠混搭 (NT$55).

This includes both the large Boba pearls for a chewier bite, and smaller pearls (slightly bigger than sago). The added cream mousse at the top gives a layer of richness.

There is also the “Tea Latte” series, which I thought wasn’t was impressionable as the Milk to experience the smoothness and full flavours.

Interestingly, the “tiger stripes” were so much more ‘beautiful’ here and stuck on the cup for a couple of minutes before they disintegrated (I am a food blogger in foreign land who brings his cup to further away places for photos.)

Tiger Sugar recommends shaking the cup for 15 times before consumption.

Just as a note: Shake BEFORE you insert the straw in, because I have seen someone do that after putting in the straw and wondered why her dress had all those white stuff.

The brown sugar was indeed fragrant with that distinct caramel flavour here. Have to say it is indeed more prominent and tastier than what I previously drank. A friend commented it is almost like having chendol in a cup.

The milk was also cold and smoothly-creamy at the same time, with softer than usual boba pearls. It was an enjoyable drink.

Also available was a limited-edition Golden Pudding Brown Sugar Milk or Tea Latte (NT$55), with the drinks added with a pudding.

The pudding was like very-soft panna cotta added to the drink, though I thought it did little to enhance the taste of the drink overall (You spend your time struggling to suck it up.) And could be distracting as the main stars to me are the brown sugar, milk and pearls.

Coincidentally, this Golden Pudding Brown Sugar Milk would be offered at Tiger Sugar Singapore at Capitol Singapore, Chinatown Point and NEW outlet at Orchard Paragon.

For 10 days, limited to 150 cups per day at each outlet. (Date it starts offered is tentatively going to be 12th January.)

So yes, Tiger Sugar is opening its 3rd outlet in Singapore at Orchard Paragon 12th January (Saturday).

10 New Cafes In Singapore January 2019 – Pusheen Café, Baristart Coffee From Sapporo, Berthold Delikatessen From Germany

Happy New Year! Am starting the first post of 2019 with a NEW cafe compilation.

To be honest, I have been writing this “New Cafes Guide” every single month without fail since 2014, and did toy with the idea of stopping it. Especially when I am travelling and would be good to take a break.

Decided to push on with it, because I think new unknown cafes and business owners in Singapore need even more exposure with the increasing competition. I hope this cafe guide comes in useful for readers as well, to discover some unheard of places.

So here it is (typing this on New Year’s Day…), 10 New Cafes In Singapore January 2019

Baristart Coffee Singapore
65 Tras Street Singapore 079004

(Opening mid January 2019)

Popular “Hidden Gem” in Hokkaido Coming To Singapore In January
Baristart is where the Japanese in downtown Sapporo head for a cup of specialty coffee with bespoke latte art, free-poured by a world-class award-winning latte art master.

One unique aspect is that the café offers 3 different types of premium imported Hokkaido milk to pair with high quality coffee beans.

In particular, the Brown Jersey cows’ milk – known to be rich and cream with a tinge of sweetness, is extremely popular among customers as the cows make up only about 1% of the cow population in Hokkaido.

Also included is a range of desserts made of Hokkaido milk. The café will open at Tras Street.

ARTEA
Vivocity #01-100/101 1 Harbourfront Walk, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/arteasg

Floral Themed Café With Specialty Teas And Soufflé Pancakes
What makes ARTEA different is that it is an original brand, focuses on tea and soufflé pancakes, with a lifestyle-café concept.

As its name “ARTEA” suggests, the café seeks to combine tea-drinking with art, with an obvious “floral” theme.

While ARTEA may not be a known dessert house, surprisingly they got their Japanese style Soufflé pancakes quite right – airy, wobbly and delicious.

The big draw are its Soufflé pancakes, freshly baked and assembled on the spot. It is recommended to take your photos quick, because they are best tasted warm and fluffy.

As a note, as all of them are made only upon order, be prepared to wait a while for your dessert treat. ARTEA (Vivocity)

A Summer in Paris
1 Harbourfront Walk, #01-13 VivoCity, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront Station)

Held once every 4 years, this is France’s highest accolade awarded for expertise and excellence, considered the “holy grail” to be achieved by French pastry chefs.

I would give my vote to the Pompom ($9.30), striking in appearance looking like a green apple.

On its base is a crumbly citrus shortbread, with the soft green apple cream and jelly adding some subtle sourness which blended well with the sweetness. A Summer In Paris (Vivocity)

Cosmo Restaurant & Wine Bar is an understated new establishment located at Forum The Shopping Mall, where California Pizza Kitchen used to be.

It offers a modern European take on classic cosmopolitan dishes using premium ingredients to create culinary indulgences.

Not to be outdone in its offerings, the trendy wine bar boasts a stellar line up of over 70 wines, plus beers and spirits.

The recommended dish is the Beignets de Crabe ($20). These appetizing crab cakes are handmade with an array of Mediterranean flavours, shaped and pan-fried until crisp.

Another special highlight which I discovered after re-visiting was the Chef’s “Omakase”, priced at a super wallet-friendly $38++ only.

The 5-course meal for me includes tasting portions of Foie Gras, Porcini Cappuccino, Sous Vide “Chicken”, Joue De Boeuf, and Dessert of the Day – which was Crème Brulee made in-house. Note: Items rotate regularly.

Zaku Zaku 棒棒泡芙 – Matcha Choco and Berry Choco Choux Cream Sticks In Taipei

$

[Taipei] Despite opening in Taipei for more than a year, Croquant Chou Zaku Zaku 棒棒泡芙 still enjoys popularity among the youths.

Zaku Zaku ザクザク which means “crunchy” in Japanese, was one of the hottest snacks you can find in Japan, Taipei and Bangkok.

The store in Taipei is located within A11 Shinkong Mitsukoshi Taipei, right next to LINE Café.

It is essentially a long choux pastry made by baking almonds, coated with sugar and egg whites, filled with creamy smooth custard.

The original Croquant Chou (NT$98, SGD4.36) is priced higher than the Japan’s counterpart.

There are 3 “principles” on where they are so delicious: they are baked fresh in store (in fact you can smell them a distance away); milk from free range cattle raised in the stress free environment of Hokkaido is used; and the fine custard cream used is made with the high speed vacuum cooker.

Also, shoppers who walk past can see how the pastries are prepared through the glass window, or at least smell the aroma can get tempted to get at least one to try.

The appeal is really in its almond nuttiness, along with milky smooth fillings which are not that sweet.

I loved it very much when I first tried in Tokyo However, having tasted the same thing in Japan, I thought that the one here wasn’t was crisp-hot and lacked that buttery fragrance.

So it was kind of disappointing, but if you have yet to try it before, I still think it’s worthwhile getting one to taste what the whole fuss is about.

My recommendation is to eat it fresh and immediately, otherwise it just gets soggy.

For the seasonal special, there is the introduction of Berry Choco and Matcha Choco, both priced at NT$98.

It was probably more choco than matcha, as the sweetness of the milk chocolate covered the taste of the green tea. People usually get both for its “instagrammable” qualities.

15 Must-Try Fruit Teas In Singapore – From HEYTEA, Nayuki, ARTEA To MuYoo+

It is undeniable that the bubble tea trend has returned once again. (Of course I remember during my teenager years when it was a must-have to have these drinks, until the bubble burst.)

“Bubble tea” is no longer the same as it is the past, as brands are finding ways to chut-pattern – from the rainbow coloured or ombre drinks, cheese milk tea, to the recent Brown Sugar milk craze in which many shops continue to enjoy long lines.

I wonder if the folks at HPB drink their bubble tea. Anyway, as 2019 is here, and everyone’s focus is on going healthy and losing weight once again, here’s a look at the Fruit Teas available in Singapore.
The Fruit Teas which are packed with fruits, looking all colourful in tall cups, make them attractive drink for takeaways.

My recommendation is always to go for the minimum sugar, so that you can taste the natural flavours of both the tea and sweetness from fruits.

If you want to sip on a stimulating tea with chunks of fruits in your cup, check out the following 15 places that serve some of the best Fruit Teas in Singapore.

HEYTEA Singapore
ION Orchard Mall, 2 Orchard Turn, #B4-29, Singapore 238801 (Orchard MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

https://www.facebook.com/heyteacn

Of the fruit tea range introduced by HEYTEA in Singapore, I suspect that the Grapefruit Boom Tea 满杯红柚 ($5.90) would end up to be one of the most popular.

The jasmine green tea (Aqua Green) has subtly sweet and fragrant notes, and the slices of grapefruit added shines through with that burst of sharp-fruitiness.

Good to know that all HEYTEA’s Fruity Boom tea are created using 100% natural fresh fruit juices only, with no additional fruit syrup or flavouring. HEYTEA Singapore 喜茶 (ION Orchard)

Nayuki – Vivocity
Vivocity, #01-207 1 Harbourfront Walk, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
www.facebook.com/nayukisg

My favourite cup from the Nayuki’s “Supreme Fresh Fruit Tea” series is the Supreme Mixed Fruits 霸气缤纷水果 ($5.90).

It is especially refreshing with various elements from the different fruits – citrusy-sweetness from the orange slices, crisp-fruitiness from watermelon, and passionfruit providing that light tartness.

If not, you can get the Supreme Orange 霸气橙子 ($6.50). The cup that ensure you get your Vitamin C. Every cup actually consists of 2 whole oranges – a fruit one sliced, and the other freshly squeezed into juice.

This juice is then blast-frozen from Taiwan, for maximum nutrients and taste before it is imported into Singapore. Nayuki 奈雪の茶 (Vivocity)

ARTEA
Vivocity #01-100/101 1 Harbourfront Walk, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/arteasg

ARTRA’s Signature Fruit Tea ($8.20) is probably the fruit tea with the most variety of fruits in a single cup – all seven of them.

These include watermelon, rock melon, strawberries, mango, orange, passionfruit, and lime. Though yes, it is slightly pricey.

A mixture of orange juice and quality “Four Seasons Spring Oolong” 四季春 is used as the base – so named because the tea produces four flushes (or harvests) each year that still have the flavour of a spring flush.

The fragrant tea has a light floral aroma of spring flowers, and clean and sweet aftertaste, which makes it ultra-refreshing in the hot Singapore weather.

Also, the drink comes in a 1000cc cup, making it more value for its money, included generous chunks of fruits. ARTEA (Vivocity)

MuYoo+
Bedok Mall, 311 New Upper Changi Road, #01-94 (Bedok MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 11pm (Mon – Sun)
www.facebook.com/MuYooSG

MuYoo – Nurtured by Nature

Muyoo’s menu is centred around fruit-based beverages, namely the Cheese Cloud Fruit Teas, Fun Fruit Teas and Fruit Smoothies. If you would like a healthy, no-frills drink, you can go for the “Fun Fruit Tea”.

The Fruit Teas are known to comprise of fresh ingredients, with sliced fruits in full view within the cup.

Popular offerings include Green Tea Jelly with Lemon, Grapefruit with Jasmine, Pear with Pineapple, Passion Fruit with Aloe Vera and Cucumber, and Peach with Kalamansi and Passion Fruit.

The Peach with Kalamansi and Passion Fruit has that added slight sour and zingy-ness that I liked, making it a refreshing drink for the hot Singapore weather. MuYoo+ (Bedok Mall)

TaiGai @ NEX
NEX Serangoon, #B2-34, Singapore 556083 (Opposite BreadTalk)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

In TaiGai’s “Fresh Fruit Tea” 鲜果茶 category, there are offerings of Fresh Lemon Burst (Black Tea) 鲜果柠檬红茶 (红茶), Fresh Golden Kumquat Burst 鲜果金桔柠檬, Fresh Premium Orange Burst 满满特级橙子 , Kiwi-Nata de Coco Burst 满满奇异椰果茶 and Fresh Green Lemon Burst (Green Tea) 鲜果绿柠檬 (绿茶).

The recommended drink is the Fresh Premium Orange Burst ($5.90), in which the fruits are freshly sliced (via a machine), which helps retain the natural fragrance and sweetness.

The calming orange and cooling tea makes it the delightful drink for the afternoon. TaiGai 台盖 (NEX)

ParTea
Suntec City: 3 Temasek Boulevard, Suntec City Mall (North Wing), #02-470

They have up to 30 options to choose from, and each tea is paired with chunks of fruits, juices, tofu, and cheese cream.

There is ParTea‘s signature Rainbow Tea ($6.90); the delicious brew is loaded with various fruits such as mangoes, watermelon and strawberries. If you prefer your tea with milk, go for Fluffy Cloud Tea ($2.90) or Milky Mist Tea ($4.90).

True Boss 醋頭家 Singapore
Northpoint City B2-134, 1 Northpoint Drive, Singapore 768019 (Yishun MRT)
Opening Hours: 10:00am – 10:00pm

True Boss 醋頭家 is the first fruit vinegar specialty tea shop in Singapore, a brand which hails from Taiwan.

The popular chain store which originated from Tainan specialises in fruit vinegar, bubble tea, fruit smoothies and vinegar yogurt.

A recommended is the Apple Vinegar with Fruits ($3.90, $4.90). The fruits used to make the vinegar include apple, plum, peach, cranberry and grape (limited), to produce flavours which remind customers of the original fruit.

It was almost like drinking apple juice, but with that slight fruity tang of the vinegar. Yet it was not as sharp and sour say contrasted with Apple Cider vinegar. True Boss 醋頭家 (Northpoint City)

Hi-Tea
14 Scotts Road, Far East Plaza, #01, 14B, Singapore, 228213
Tel: +65 8816 7966

Highly popular among millennials, Hi-Tea has sold almost 30,000 cups of tea in just the span of 6 months.

The tea is brewed with Jasmine or Oolong tea leaves and is infused with fruits. From toasty to floral tones, Hi Tea brings an uplifting change.

Hi Tea has also just launched a D24 Premium Durian Jasmine Tea, probably the first of its kind in the world, with a mild top layer of cream and pure durian fruit.

R&B 巡茶 Outlets

Marina Square @ Cookhouse, 6 Raffles Boulevard #04-101/102 Singapore 039594

Singapore Polytechnic, Foodcourt 4 AeroHub (AE106) Singapore 139651
Oasis Terraces, 681 Punggol Drive #B1-03 Singapore 820681

If you think you will hear the notes of Rhythm & Blues flowing through the cafe, you are mistaken. The name stands for the owners ‘Rex and Bruce’, who decided to venture out and open their own tea place.

You will find about 30 concoctions of fruit-infused teas, bubble tea and tea topped with cheese cream and pearls.

A popular choice is the Zesty Lusi, of aromatic Jing Xuan tea, infused with mixed fruits such as lemon and watermelon slices.

The refreshing drink is filled with an assortment of tropical fruits such as Watermelon, Lime, Lemon and freshly squeezed Oranges, included with Hawaiian Red Tea.

A “Baby Luffy” is also available at $6.30. For the price difference, may as well get the large? R&B 巡茶 (Marina Bay Sands)

HeeTea
SingPost Centre 10 Eunos Rd 8, Singapore 408600
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)

While this cheese milk-foam tea shop is from Guangzhou, do not confuse it with Hey Tea 喜茶 – which is the more popular brand.

Apart from their famous cheese tea, the tea franchise offers fruit teas, cold brew tea, four seasons tea ad much more.

Fruit Tea choices include Pomelo Tea, Super Four Seasons Fruit Tea, Orange Green Tea, Passion Fruit Mango Tea, and Pineapple Fruit Tea. A cup is priced between $4.80 and $6.00.

Look out for seasonal specials such as the Orange On the Pomelo.

LiHo
Various Branches In Singapore

Like other tea chains, home-grown brand LiHo has a wide range of cheesy smoothies and fruit-infused teas.

They sometimes offer Fruit Teas which are not the usual offerings, such as Dragonfruit Green Tea –
jasmine green tea topped with dragonfruit juice; and Pineapple Fruit Tea – a summer-like combination of pineapples with slices of grapefruit and lime.

U-Cha
313 Orchard Road, #01-37, Singapore 238895
Tel: +65 9898 5300
Opening Hours: 11am –10:30pm (Sun – Thurs), 11am – 11pm (Fri – Sat)

As compared to other well-known tea chains, U-Cha is somewhat underrated. They have limited options on their menu that might put off some tea-enthusiasts.

From cheese tea and pure tea to lychee black tea , U-Cha has your usual and unusual options. The recommended favourites include Jasmine Passion Fruit Tea ($4.80), Ruby Passion Fruit Tea ($.80) and Jasmine Grapefruit Tea ($4.80).

Their must-try is Hsinchu Peach Fresh Milk Tea that brings a burst of unique floral tones in every sip.

iTea
Our Tampines Hub #B1-K29
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Established in 2011, homegrown beand iTea serves up revitalizing Fresh Lemon Green Tea ($2.70) or Fresh Lemon Earl Grey ($2.90) included with fresh lemon juice which is packed with Vitamin C, and provides that citrusy summer feel.

The shop also offers Fresh Lemon Yakult ($3.30), along with other flavours of Mango, Peach, Passion Fruit, and Green Apple Yakult, which is another great option with probiotics to enhance immunity and digestion.

Tea Folia
20 Tampines Central 1, #01-29/30, Singapore 529538
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm

Calling themselves ‘honest folks’, the people of Teafolia wish to serve with the nutritiously rich cup of tea. The cafe has a casual air about it which makes it a great hangout spot.

The collection of Fruit Teas on the menu uses either Four Seasons Tea from Taiwan, Royal Ceylon Black Tea from Sri Lanka or Green Tea paired with an assortment of fruits to create the different drinks.

My favourite was the Signature Fruit Tea ($5.90) which comes with Four Seasons Tea and fresh pineapple pulp as the base, topped with lime, watermelon, a slice of lemon and green apple.

Refreshing with a citrusy taste, the Signature Fruit Tea ($5.90) was strong, not that diluted in flavour. Teafolia (Tampines)

Kurotaki Chabann 黑泷太郎
180 Rangoon Road, Singapore 218442
Opening Hours: 10am – 2:30pm, 3:30pm – 7:30pm, 8:30pm – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Founded in China, the Kurotaki Chabann brand has over 1700 shops in China, though not as widely heard of here in Singapore.

While most tea places are meant for takeaway, Kurotaki Chabann at Rangoon Road has a cozy setup for heart-to-heart conversations – after your Bak Kut Teh meal nearby.

Their Fruit Tea selection includes Mixed Fruits Tea, Kumquat Green Tea, Orange Lime Tea, Lime Green Tea, Kumquat Lime, Gold Grapefruit Oolong Tea, and Honey Gold Grapefruit Tea, priced from $4.20 to $5.90. There is a $6.90 X-Large option.

15 Stamford by Alvin Leung – Creative Asian Cuisine Such as “Bak Kut Teh” Pork Chop, At The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore

$

0

This is quite a restaurant like no others.

While “Mod-Sin” cuisine is gaining traction, perhaps this is a restaurant that can be described as “Mod-Asian”.

15 Stamford by Alvin Leung is conceptualised by the maverick celebrity chef Alvin Leung, unveiled at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore.

Known for his 3 Michelin-starred restaurant Bo Innovation in Hong Kong and creative spin on food, Chef Alvin Leung positions 15 Stamford as a venue where he serves his take on Southeast Asian food while maintaining its flavours and DNA.

The menu showcases a multi-faceted hybrid of several recipes from his journeys around Asia, paying tribute to cuisines from Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

So while most of the dishes should taste more or less familiar, there are components that are unconventional and may excite your taste-buds once again.

While Bo Innovation is known for molecular dining, there is nothing too “X-Treme” here, but creative dishes of quite substantial portions.

What you can expect include the Singapore Chilli Crab inspired dish of Whole Alaskan King Crab in Chilli Crab Sauce and served with Cornbread; Whole Boston Lobster with Mangosteen, Tomato and Spicy Thai Dressing; and Hokkaido Scallop with Adobo Butter and Ginger which pays tribute to the iconic Filipino dish Adobo.

Here are other recommended dishes from 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung:

Singapore Laksa with Jasmine Tea-smoked Onsen Quail Eggs, Housemade Dried Shrimp Oil, Shrimp Floss and Charcoal-Grilled Tiger Prawns ($32)
A generous portion of Laksa made Katong-style, where the thick beehoon rice noodles are cut into shorter bite-sized strands so the dish can be eaten with a spoon alone sans chopsticks or fork.

The creamy coconut-based lemak broth made with house-made rempah, is further enhanced with special dried shrimp and sprinkling of dried shrimp floss.

I would recommend having this hot straight after it is served, so that you can better taste that light crisp from the floss.

There are two other selling points of the Laksa: the 3 pieces of onsen quail eggs in which you can savour some subtle Jasmine tea fragrance; and 2 large char-grilled Tiger Prawns with appealing smokiness.

Chargrilled “Bak Kut Teh” Pork Chop with Compressed Watermelon, Angelica, Barbecue Sauce ($38)
Unlike the peppery Teochew-style Bak Kut Teh, Chef Alvin’s rendition of this grilled dish is more on the herbal Malaysian variety.

It also deliberately lacks the soup this local dish is known to have.

The large slab of bone-in pork chop is marinated over 8 different herbal spices for 12 hours, and chargrilled until tender.

Accompanied with blocks of compressed watermelon soaked in a fragrant angelica syrup, the grilled steak comes with a serving of sweet house-made barbecue sauce that reminded me of a more fragrant dark sauce often accompanied with the dish.

Because of the way it is presented, you can enjoy this like a Western-style pork chop, but obviously infused with recognisable Asian flavours.

Bone in Beef Short Ribs Rendang served with Cabbage Salad ($68)
Of all the food served, I thought that the element of surprise was the strongest for this.

The Malaysia-inspired dish features bone-in US beef ribs that has been cooked sous vide for 72 hours, long enough to bring out the beef’s ultimate tenderness and flavour.

Marinated in a sweet rendang sauce reminiscent of the stew, I say let those flavours linger in your mouth.

Served with a house-made pink preserved cabbage salad that is like an Asian version of the German sauerkraut, and topped with fried scallions.

Bluefin Tuna Tartare in Gochujang Sauce served with Son-in-Law Egg ($36)
Recently, I tried Chef Alvin Leung’s lesser-known modern Korean concept Bib n Hops in Hong Kong, and was impressed with the interpretation of several of the dishes.

Therefore I was glad to see a couple of Korean-inspired food items here, such as this Bluefin Tuna Tartare.

Served as a starter and part of the bar menu, this dish comprising of soft cubes of raw Bluefin tuna is an interplay of textures and flavours.

Providing some heat (but not that much) is the house-made gochujang (Korean red chilli paste) to balance off the chilled fish meat.

This spicy appetiser is topped with a runny “son-in-law egg”.

Son-in-law egg? It’s also known as “kai loug kheuh” in Thailand, boosting crisp golden exterior, creamy centre sizzled in rich, sweet and sour caramel-like sauce.

Three-style Corn, Heirloom Tomatoes and Cucumbers in Hong Kong “Pat Chun” Sweet Vinegar ($18)
It is not often you find popcorn in a salad. This unique salad combines three types of corn – smoky charred butter corn, tender ears of baby corn, and crunchy popcorn.

The syrupy dressing used is a ba zhen or “eight treasures” vinaigrette, based on the Hong Kong popular “Pat Chun” sweet vinegar.

Tossed into the mix are peeled heirloom cherry tomatoes and pieces of juicy cucumber, which go well with the dry, chewy popcorn.

Hokkaido Scallop with Salted Plum and Shiso
A Japanese Scallop Sashimi starter that looks like a mini-garden, garnished with Japanese green shiso leaves, chives and Japanese sesame oil.

There is an reinvigorating factor with the addition of special salted plum sauce.

Hamachi with Calamansi Ponzu and Roasted Sesame
Hamachi sashimi tossed in calamansi ponzu sauce, finished off with calamansi gel and fried garlic chips for extra crunch.

Mango Pomelo Sago with Coconut Snow ($16)
A classic Cantonese dessert gets molecularized when the traditional trio of mango, pomelo and sago meet nitrogen coconut ice.

Inspired by the Asian “Ice Kachang”, the thick and rich fruit base carries a hint of citrus from the addition of refreshing yuzu, and capped to a heap with coconut snow.

15 Stamford is a modern 150-seater restaurant, with a private room that can accommodate up to 12 persons.

There are various sections that you can dine at; some that faces the open-kitchen, circular booth seats that can accommodate groups for a more intimate session; and long tables for a get-together with family and friends.

The interiors blends with the beautifully conserved architecture of Stamford House. There was that strong Art Deco elegance and decadence, yet with Asian elements in the details.

A beautiful space.

Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles 林東芳牛肉麵 – Perhaps The Best Taiwanese Beef Noodles In Taipei, With Flavourful Soup & Tender Beef

[Taipei] When people talk about the “Best Beef Noodles in Taipei”, it is usually a toss-up between Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 or Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles 林東芳牛肉麵.

Though there are also supporters for other humble-looking but renowned shops such as Liu Shandong Beef Noodles 劉山東牛肉麵, Niu Dian Beef Noodles 牛店精燉牛肉麵, and Halal Chinese Beef Noodles 清真中國牛肉麵食館.

All of them were awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand by the way.

When I arrived at Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles 林東芳牛肉麵 at Andong Street before the opening hour of 11am, the queue was even longer than before.

The shop also had a spanking-new look, much different from the “hole-in-the-wall” eatery that it used to be like.

It has “dintaifung-nified”, meaning it has probably gone more commercial.

Despite the rather long line, customers were let in with a orderly fashion.

Though do not expect the very-friendly Taiwanese service, as the service staff looked more ‘functional’ but were quick to get orders through and do their work.

On the menu are the signature bowls of Beef Noodles (NT$160, NT$190), Half Tendon Half Beef Noodles (NT$210, NT$260), Beef Tripe Noodles (NT$210, NT$240), and Beef Tendon Noodles (NT$240, NT$270).

I ordered a bowl of Beef Noodles, at NT$160 is an affordable SGD7 or USD5.20.

The light aroma arrived before the bowl, and while the soup looked slightly clear, it was surprisingly flavourful underlying with taste of herbs and spices that didn’t overpower the rest.

Compared to other beef noodle soups that are more robust (especially if you order a ”hong shao”), this had a cleaner, pleasing taste that was still complex and appetising.

The stock is said to be cooked over 20 hours, using beef bones and a secret blend of herbs.

However, I could imagine diners feeling this soup would be too light as many other shops tend to be on the heavy end full of beef flavours.

If you need some spice in your soup, add a small, small portion of the specially-made chilli paste available at the side of the table.

The meat slices were lean and meaty (not the fatty type) yet melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

At some of the other noodle shops, I tend not to finish the noodles because I usually find them too thick and heavy.

Lin Dong Fang’s noodles somehow had this QQ al-dente and chewy bite, didn’t get too soggy and worked well with the clear beef stock.

As for the side dishes, the must-order is recommended to be the “Hua Gan” (NT$40) – dried tofu cooked in beef stock.

I was more or less just-okay with this, didn’t quite understand the fuss though there were raving reviews.

The taxi driver who picked me remarked that this side dish used to taste more better and more ”ru wei” (absorbed flavours better.)

Other side dishes available include Dried Tofu, Tofu Skin (I like), Mustard Greens, Pickled Cucumbers, Dried Fish and Pickled Cabbage.

Note: These side dishes are taken from the fridge on your own, but the Hua Gan needs to be ordered from the service staff.

Of all the Taiwanese Beef Noodles I had in Taipei recently, I actually do enjoy Lin Dong Fang the most for its light and complex beef broth and tender beef slices.

Note: Only cash is accepted, no credit cards.

There is also an outlet within the foodcourt at the departure hall of the Taipei Songshan Airport, just in case you need to satisfy a beef noodle craving before you fly off.
