New Ubin Seafood – New Location At Hillview, Truly Singaporean Zhi Char Fare

New Ubin Seafood has moved out of its venue at Sing Ming Road, to Lam Soon Industrial Building No. 63 Hillview Avenue.

Happier news for the Bukit Timah folks.

The new location can seat about 280 people, and has maintained the old kopitiam style mood and furniture. More or less.

As the NEW New Ubin Seafood is located at a “canteen” of the industrial building, it will also offer lunch time sets.

Finding this place can be challenging for those who don’t drive (and not good with GPS).

Located next to the carpark on Level 6, almost the entire restaurant was shone in dark yellow light.

Food bloggers/instagrammers, can keep your cameras already and just concentrate on eating. Some areas, especially those near the carpark, could feel warm, stuffy and cramped.

If you are seated in a big group, then perhaps you could land up in the cooler, more spacious ‘VIP’ rooms inside.

That is where most of the décor still retains.

New Ubin Seafood is one of my Top 10 Must Try Zi Char Places In Singapore.

And it has also been recently included into the Singapore Michelin Bib Gourmand Guide 2016. (Any chance of a star coming year?)

Will food remain the same standard over at Lam Soon?

What I like about this place: The breath of its variety, even Masala Chicken, which reflects our unique Singapore culture.

You won’t find just the typical zi char dishes, but US Ribeye, Chocolate Alexander, Fish Roe Masala, BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Satay Foie Gras, and BBQ Pork Collar among the top selling dishes.

How I look out for dishes to order is the floor-to-ceiling chalkboard where they would indicate their most popular dishes – Heart Attack Fried Rice, Chilli Crab, Crispy Pork Knuckles, Boss Style Bee Hoon, Great Shovel Nose Ray, and Hei Chor.

US Black Angus Ribeye Steak
Some customers call this the ‘ang moh’ zi char restaurant, and order the US Black Angus Ribeye Steak ($14 for 100 grams, we paid $84), served together with caramelised onions, Idaho potato wedges, sea salt flakes, and my favourite… fried rice cooked with beef drippings.

Super flavoursome.

The fried rice is probably the most tongue-pleasing, yet artery-clogging dish to look out for.

Fried Hokkien Mee Prawn Noodle Special
My personal must-order is their version of Hokkien Mee ($14), cooked in rich prawn stock so that the entire plate would become wet and gooey, almost sticky.

I have tried this same dish for about 5-6 times over the last 2-3 years.

However, this was kind of the most lacklustre version – lack of wok-hei, noodles a tad soft (perhaps over fried) and tasted off from the usual. Hope they can maintain some consistency.

Boss Beehoon
New found favourite dish of Boss Beehoon ($9) which seemed to be fried with an appetising and addictive black sauce (probably some fats added, because it was quite fragrant).

Warning: Could be ‘heaty’.

Chicken Satay
The satay ($8.50 for 10) ended up to be the most predictable, safest, yet one of the best dish of all we tried for its juicy meat, sweet glaze with a slight char.

Chye Poh Kway Teow
One of those seldom-seen before dishes in Singapore. The Chye Poh Kway Teow ($10) contained thin rice noodles (almost like Pad Thai’s width) fried with preserved radish.

Still, I liked it way better the first time I tried this, than over at this new location.

Chicken Masala
Quite power. The Chicken Masala ($24) tasted almost like the fillings of many spicy curry puffs came together into a pot.

Thick, greasy, appetising, spicy shiok, but won’t burn your tongue kind.

Though New Ubin Seafood has its beginnings from a restaurant Pulau Ubin’s north shore, they really made its name when it moved to the rustic Sin Ming area.

I still like this current New Ubin Seafood, and would place this as one of the places you can get the most unique “Truly Singaporean” zhi char dishes.

However, I couldn’t help feel that the last location was more ‘kampong’, airier, and food just somehow tasted 10%-20% better.

Perhaps the team is still getting used to the premises, and hope they can keep up with the consistency.

Seafood Paradise – NEW Location At MBS, With Awesome Chilli Crab & Crab Bee Hoon

$

The sight of the Wok-Fried Bee Hoon with Sri Lankan Crab, all looking sumptuously hot with wok-hei, and crab juices absorbed into the bee hoon, got me all anticipated to try the new Seafood Paradise.

Seafood Paradise originally at Defu Lane, is actually the very first restaurant launched by the local Paradise Group (which is definitely going places).

The flagship restaurant has recently moved to Marina Bay Sands Level 2 dining area.

My friends’ first reaction, “WOW, going atas already.”

However, prices are still kept reasonable considering it is located among the cluster of dining establishment by international celebrity chefs, boosting extensive variety of fresh seafood.

[Plus, Maybank Credit or Debit Cardmembers can get to earn 12.5% P$ Rebate at Paradise Group of Restaurants. There is also an Alaskan Crab Promotion at S$99/kg (U.P. S$188/kg) for Maybank Cardmembers, valid till 30 November 2016. More details at end of the post.]

The 177-seater restaurant is situated above the casino level, has a warm cosy interior, with eight luxurious private dining rooms that can accommodate groups of up to 15 people.

Here are some of my favourites from Seafood Paradise at Marina Bay Sands:

Singapore Style Chilli Sri Lankan Crab (S$8 per 100g)
If you need a crab recommendation at Seafood Paradise, I have considered this the best of their best.

Okay, chilli crab sauces can be very subjective, some like them spicier, while some prefer the sweet tomato ketchup tones.

I find Seafood Paradise’s rendition distinctly different from all others I have tried in Singapore – slight tinge to the spicier side.

The sauce had a fine balance of spiciness, sweetness and savouriness, all with a pleasurable, thick consistency.

Initially, my friends and I wanted to restrict the number of mantou buns to consume, but they were so fluffy, temptation craved in.

So shiok to sweep across the sauce. In the end, the plate became empty.

Signature Creamy Butter Sri Lankan Crab topped with Coconut Crumbs (S$8 per 100g)
This sauce is said to be Seafood Paradise’s unique creation. You cannot find it anywhere else.

Made fresh daily using aromatics such as curry leaves, white pepper, lemongrass and chilli padi, the sweetish creamy sauce complemented the fresh, succulent Dungeness crab meat well.

Warning: This milky butter sauce can be rather addictive.

Wok-Fried Bee Hoon with Sri Lankan Crab (S$8 per 100g)
The server explained this dish was prepared differently from the typical cooking methods.

Instead of cooking separately, the bee hoon was braised with the crabs above.

Therefore, the essence of the crab meat would be seeped and absorbed by the vermicelli, giving every strand fuller flavours.

Truly, being a bee hoon person, I found the flavours evenly infused within, making every bite quite scrumptious. On the flipside, in comparison, the crab meat felt drier than the other two crab dishes.

Crispy Kang Kong topped with Cuttlefish in Homemade Seafood Sauce (S$14.80, S$21.80, S$28.80)
Said to be inspired by the zhi char dish of “you he eng cai”, this was a kang kong dish not quite like any others.

The leaves were first individually dipped in batter, deep fried till light and crisp, then served with cuttlefish cut into shape like a flower.

The cuttlefish had a pleasant crunchy texture, not rubbery (my main fear if it was overcooked), and had an added dimension when dipped into a specially made spicy sweet sauce.

Braised Tiger Garoupa with Supreme Soya Sauce in Claypot (S$10 per 100g)
Claypot cooking is used so that the heat can be circulated around, cooking the fish slowly and evenly.

As the lid was lifted off, you would first smell the aroma, then hear the sizzling of the special soy sauce made with a house recipe.

The fish had a clean taste, with the sauce lightly enhancing the savour.

Other recommended dishes would include Poached Live Clams with Chinese Wine in Claypot (S$38, S$57, S$75), and Pan-fried Live South African Abalone (S$48).

With many international restaurants headlining Marina Bay Sands, I am glad to find Seafood Paradise there which offers decent, quality Chinese cuisine to dine with families and friends.

And the Chilli Crabs were really very good.

AquaMarine – Seafood Galore, Halal Certified Buffet Stations at Marina Mandarin. Promo: 15% OFF with UnionPay Cards!

$

It was a weekday lunch buffet, and AquaMarine at Marina Mandarin Level 4 known for its dazzling spread of seafood and international cuisine, was packed with diners.

Here is one possible reason why: There is just SO MUCH FOOD at Aquamarine, considered value for its money.

[There is also another reason: UnionPay Card appears to be their best companion in the hunting for delicacies owing to the convenience and privileges it offers. For further deals, check out the UnionPay Promotion at the end of the post. 15% off total food bill at AquaMarine with UnionPay card.]

After recceing a few rounds to survey the food, I must say this buffet restaurant has quite a wide sumptuous-looking spread, known for tasty Stone Crabs, Steamed Live Prawns, juicy Black Mussels from France, succulent Spanner Crabs and Fresh Clams.

I walked further to a Terrace behind, and there was MORE FOOD there – Japanese and Chinese highlights of sashimi, tempura, soba and a live roast station (don’t miss stepping out and the entire section).

Better news: AquaMarine is certified Halal for its buffet stations. Good consideration if you need to organise a company or group dinner where there are Muslim friends and colleagues.

Perennial favourites at AquaMarine include Chili or Black Pepper Crabs, live stations with Roast Beef or Lamb, alongside Durian Pengat, Soft Serve Ice-Cream, Kueh Kuehs and Cakes.

The must-must have is the Hainanese Chicken Rice, also known as the “Legendary Mandarin Chicken Rice”.

The Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of the best you can find at a buffet restaurant in Singapore.

The chicken meats were succulently juicy, laying on a combination of soy sauce and oil that I couldn’t stop swiping the pieces across.

The fragrant, not-too-oily rice went well with the accompanying signature chili sauce, ginger paste and dark soy sauce.

Admittedly, not every item on the buffet was “wow”, some fell flat in terms of flavours.

This is understandably challenging because the team was trying to present a really wide spectrum on international and Asian fare, and you could even get Korean, Thai and Filipino food items.

Head for the seafood section and you would be treated freshness of salmon sashimi, crabs, oysters, mussels and prawns, all in endless flow.

Mediterranean Food Festival
What to look forward to: a thematic highlight at AquaMarine every month.

A Mediterranean Food Festival is available from 1 Nov to 30 Nov 2016, featuring key dishes such as Barramundi Baked in Rock Salt and Ash, with Charred Lemon Juice and Olive Oil, 16 hours of Slow Cooked Wagyu Beef Shortribs with Feta Cheese, Semi Dried Tomato and Oregano, Free Range Chicken and Mushroom Risotto served in whole Parmesan wheel, Zuppa Di Presce which is Sicilian Seafood Stew and Salmon Escabache with Capers and Pimento.

15 Best Unique Fries In Singapore, Not Just Truffle Fries

$

Fries, fries, fries… from straight cut, shoestring, curly, crinkle-cut, twister with flavours from truffle to poutine and chili cheese, we love them as part of a main or as an appetiser on its own.

These are some of the 15 Best Unique Fries In Singapore, And Not Just Truffle Fries.

Meat and Chill
805 Bukit Timah Road, 6th Avenue Centre #01-04 Singapore 279883 (Sixth Avenue MRT)
Tel: +65 6219 7460
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 2:30pm, 5:00pm-10:30pm (Tues – Thurs)
11:00am – 2:30pm, 5:00pm-11:00pm (Fri),
11:00am – 11:00pm (Sat)
11:00am – 10:30pm (Sun)
Closed Mons, last orders at half an hour before closing

Raclette Cheese Fries
Available as part of a Meat Platter, the Raclette Cheese takes the wheel (pardon the pun). The Swiss cheese dish involves heating a wheel of semi-hard cow’s milk cheese, and scrapping off (racler) the melted part onto fries.

That is not over.

Here is the cue for you to get your cameras ready for Instagram, bourbon will be poured over, and flamed up on the fries.

Otto’s Deli Fresh
Raffles @ Holland Village #02-01, 118 Holland Avenue Singapore 278990 (Holland Village MRT)
Tel +65 6694 3291
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm Daily

Fries with Salted Egg Yolk Cream
While I initially wanted to go easy on the Hand Cut Fries with Salted Egg Yolk Cream sauce ($6), they were irresistible.

Without exaggerating, these were probably the best fries I have eaten this entire year, perhaps even including last.

It has been a while since I last ate fries with that real potato taste (I know, sad), and these came soft and lightly salted, with house-made creamy salted egg sauce without that artificialness.

Wingstop Singapore
VivoCity #02-143, 1 Harbourfront Walk, Singapore 098585
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 10:00pm (Mon – Fri), 10:30am – 10:00pm

Jalapeno Cheese Fries
Hand-cut fries, cooked to order, and the cheese sauce was the-yums. Again, perhaps eat these fast, otherwise the fries would turn soggy quick.

Som Tam
181 Orchard Road, Orchard Central #08-13 Singapore 238896 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6238 6872
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 3:30pm, 5:30pm to 10pm (Mon-Thurs), 11:30am to 10pm (Fri-Sun)

Tom Yum Truffle Fries
With something like Tom Yum Truffle Fries ($6.80), we knew that was needed to fulfil our curiosity. “What on earth will the taste be like?”

Verdict. Like fries with salty tom yum power, while the truffle went missing.

South Union Park
101 Jalan Kembangan, Singapore 419139 (Kembangan MRT)
Tel: +65 9061 8703
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Mon), 5:30pm – 10pm (Wed), 11:30am – 10pm (Thurs), 11:30am – 11pm (Fri – Sat), 11:30am – 10pm (Sun), Closed Tues
https://www.facebook.com/southunionpark

Poutine
Poutine is a Canadian dish of fries in cream cheese and some kind of gravy.

Warning! This can be very addictive! The fries were soaked in duck gravy, cheese sauce and further added with crunchy duck skin – salty and sinfully good.

Vatos Urban Tacos
South Beach Quarter, 36 Beach Road Singapore 189767
Tel: +65 63856010
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 11pm (Mon – Thurs), 11:30am – 12am (Fri – Sat)

Kimchi Carnita Fries
The Kimchi Carnitas Fries ($16) was voted the “best dish in Korea” by 10 Magazine and one of the “six must-try foods in Seoul” by The Fodor’s Travel Guide.

It was actually good stuff. Shoestring fried drizzled with both sour cream and hot sauce, topped with fresh chopped onions, melted cheese, KIMCHI and a sprinkling of braised pork.

I find the mix of both sauces pleasurable, as one could lick off the creaminess at the edge, mixed with a dash of fieriness. Not overly spicy, I must say.

Cheng’s Gourmet Food Bar & Bistro BBQ
28 Clementi Road Singapore 129758
Tel: +65 6464 0617
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 5pm, 5:30pm – 11:45pm Daily
https://www.facebook.com/chengs.gourmetfoodbar

Yuan Yang Fries
Have the best of both worlds – half truffle fries, half sweet potato, with aioli on the side to drizzle over or dip. $14.

Café & Meal MUJI
Raffles City #02-20/22, 252 North Bridge Road, Singapore 179103 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

Soy-Sansho French Fries
The Soy-Sansho French Fries ($6.90) is a Café & Meal MUJI Singapore special.

That means fries coated with seasoning mix of Japanese Shoyu Powder and Parmaesan Cheese seasoning and Sansho spice (which may remind you of another fast-food restaurant).
Salty, good with a yuzu drink to wind down the time away.

Redpan
6 Raffles Boulevard, Marina Square #02-03/04 Singapore 039593 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 6255 5850
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 11am – 10pm (Sat, Sun, PH)
https://www.facebook.com/redpansg

Char Siew Chilli Fries
You can’t stop eating this. Truly a type of fries I won’t mind having again and again. I imagined drier form of char siew when I saw this on the menu.

Fortunately, the Char Siew Chilli Fries ($7)was covered with a moist saucy chew siew ragout, with sour cream and jalapeño salsa, which to me was an improved version of fries with meat sauce.

Truffle Floss Fries ($8)
Also available at Redpan.

Floss and sweet mayonnaise made a particular brand’s signature bread very famous. This fries had sweet-mayonnaise like drizzled over, which was adequately coated by chicken floss.

Wait, there was also truffle aioli which would satisfy truffle-fries fan.

Truffle fries? This is one level up.

The Butchers Club Burger
3A River Valley Road, #01-01B Clarke Quay, Singapore 179020
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am (Sun – Tues), 12pm – 2am (Wed – Thurs), 12pm – 4am (Fri – Sat)

Duck Fat Fries
Thrice-fried duck fat fries. But I was hesitating with the price $8 for a small pack.

Sin Lee Foods
Blk 4 Jalan Bukit Ho Swee #01-164 Singapore 162004
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 9pm (Tues-Fri), 9am – 9pm (Sat), 9am – 6pm (Sun), 11:30am – 6pm (PH), Closed Mon

Salted Egg Sweet Potato Fries
Strangely, this Salted Egg Sweet Potato Fries ($12) works. Twice fried so that it becomes golden crisp on the exterior but still soft inside, accompanied with curry leaves and grainy house-made salted egg sauce.

Dazzling Café Pink
277 Orchard Road #01-12 Orchardgateway Singapore 238858 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6385 3639
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Sun – Thurs), 11am – 10.30pm (Fri – Sat)

Mentaiko Fries
While Dazzling Café has been known for its Shibuya Toast, the Mentaiko Fries ($9.50) with creamy mentaiko sauce drizzled over shoe string fries turned out to be addictively pleasurable. Light and crisp.

Ninja Bowl
15 Duxton Road Singapore 089481
Tel: +65 6222 8055
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 7:30pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 6pm (Sat – Sun)

Poutine
These shoestring fries with melted cheese and so saucy shredded beef chunks covered all over. Warning, when you see the oily sauce left at the bottom of the dish, you may worry a tad bit.

Spuds and Aprons
109 Mount Faber Road Faber Peak, Level 2 Singapore 099203
Opening Hours: Lunch 12pm – 11pm Last Order 10pm (Mon – Fri)
Dinner 11am – 11pm Last Order 10pm (Sat – Sun)

Truffle Wicked Fries & Gravy
There are truffle fries and there is this – Truffle Wicked Fries & Gravy ($13).

A starter of steakhouse cut fries, with 6 types of cheeses melted or sprinkled over (emmental, gruyere, provolone, cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan), laced with truffle oil, and for the finishing touch… dipped in house-made brown gravy.

Chalong – Charcoal Grilled Meats Bowls At Tanjong Pagar Centre

$

[NEW] Chalong is one of the first shops that opened at the basement 2 of Tanjong Pagar Centre, which houses quite a number of F&B right next to Tanjong MRT station.

The kiosk with 4 seats serves up charcoal grilled meats bowls, added with egg and Yamagata Haenuki Japanese rice.

The varieties include an 18 hour Sous Vide Jowl bowl of apple wood smoked pork cheeks ($12), Gai of Thai basil chicken thigh ($9), Grass-fed Black Angus Sirloin ($14) and 30 Day Aged Iowa Prime Rib (coming soon).

Customers can also choose to add on grilled asparagus ($1) or grilled tomatoes on vine from Holland ($1).

All their meats are charcoal-grilled, apple wood smoked in a Josper oven to complement their savoury rice bowls.

Leading the kitchen is Chef Elin Boh, who has a grand diploma for pastry and cuisine from Le Cordon Bleu (Paris) and a grand diploma from Oliver Bajard International School of Patisserie (Perpignan, France).

The menu is revolved around different inspirations from their travels.

The inspiration to open a food shop in Singapore began on a holiday trip to Phuket, after they stumbled upon a popular restaurant where locals were enjoying a dish of charcoal grilled pork.

They fell in love immediately and decided to recreate their take on the dish in Singapore.

I had the signature, the Grass-fed Black Angus Striploin bowl ($14), glazed with French red wine (Bordeaux) sauce and yoghurt sauce.

Turned out to be a value-for-money and tasty option, the tender slices of meat covering in generous portions over the rice.

For a gym-goer who need a reasonable amount of protein (hahaha), I think Chalong managed to strike the balance of taste and being healthy at the same time. If only they had a salad option, they could give some of their competitors a run for their money.

Chalong
Tanjong Pagar Centre B2-21, 7 Wallich Street Singapore 078884 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2pm, 5:30pm – 7:30pm (Mon – Fri), 11:30am – 3pm (Sat), Closed Sun

The Epicurean Star Award 2016 organised by the Restaurant Association of Singapore RAS honours some of the best restaurants, cafes, and catering business in the country.

Restaurants are first nominated then judged anonymously by a group of judges, with criteria includes:
– Restaurant concept (e.g. design, ambience, unique selling points, key success factors)
– Food menu and quality
– Service quality

I was one of the judges (won’t say which categories), and I can vouch on the anonymity. Sometimes, this experience gives us more room to observe the other areas other than the taste of food.

This year, the entire process was mostly positive, and the winners I chose really excelled in all areas from food to service.

Service is an important component, and I am usually most impressed if the staff is knowledgeable about their menu, and are proactive in making recommendations. Anyway, time to lose those weight gained over the month.

10 Best NEW Cafés In Singapore 2016 – Got The Taste, Feel And Heart

$
0
0

[FOOD GUIDE] After visiting more than 100 NEW Cafes in Singapore this year, this is our guide to the Best NEW Cafes in Singapore for 2016.

Of course we all know “BEST” is subjective. Taste, price, service, ambience, the ‘cafe-feel’ all play a part.

Personally, we are also looking out for that X-Factor.

There are so many, many, many NEW cafes. Some are almost direct moulds from the other successful ones. Some try to survive on selling trendy instagrammable food. But got look, no taste. Or no look, no taste. Some still think eggs ben and waffles are very IN. Just saying.

Those cafes listed here, have that special edge or difference that makes them appealing. They may not be perfect, but they have the heart.

Ninja Bowl
15 Duxton Road Singapore 089481
Tel: +65 6222 8055
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 7:30pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 6pm (Sat – Sun)

Japanese Inspired Rice Bowls and That Beautiful French Toast
While friends initially had the impression that Ninja Bowl just serves “healthy bowls”, there are other intriguingly sounding brunch items such as Gyu & Tama ($17) – mushroom scrambled eggs with 24-hour braised beef cheek, Tonkotsu Spirit ($16) of aburi cha shu and poached eggs (no tonkotsu or spirits in this one), sandwiches, bites such as Bacon Tempura ($10) and Poutine Fries ($14), and cakes at the display counter.

This is quite the chillax cafe to go to.

It does get very packed during lunch time, and we would recommend going slightly off-peak (if you can afford to). Get your hands on their Poutine Fries ($14) and Una Tama ($14) of yaki unagi and creamy scrambled eggs on toast.

D’Good Café
391 Orchard Road #B1-56 Takashimaya S.C., Ngee Ann City Singapore 238872
Tel: +65 6694 1411
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

London Inspired Café At Takashimaya For Some Celeb Spotting
While there are already many cafés along the Orchard Road belt, friends still ask the same-old questions of, “Where to go for coffee in town ah?”

D’Good Café was my recommendation, and it turned out to be not too bad a choice.

Regular café-hoppers should be familiar with the brand, established in 2012 at a 2-storey shophouse in Holland Village.

We liked the garden-looking exterior with (fake) roses and swing-like chairs on the outside. Good for some mini tai-tai social gatherings.

Food wise, expect mains such as Ling Cod Fish and Chips ($22.00), The Scotch Egg ($13.00) and Poached Fresh Lobster pasta ($22.00), D’Lobster Roll ($22.00), Portobello Eggs Benedict ($14.50) and Maple Sea Salt Cheesecake ($9.00 per slice). Above the usual ‘town-standard’ (opps).

Atlas Coffeehouse
6 Duke’s Road, Singapore 268886 (Botanic Gardens MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 7pm (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/atlascoffeehouse

Assembly Coffee Opens A Sister Cafe At Bukit Timah. This, We Love.
Atlas Coffeehouse is helmed by the team behind Assembly Coffee, known for their Shibuya toasts, waffles and coffee to appeal to university undergraduates. This venture at Duke’s Road, a 5 minute walk from Botanic Gardens MRT on Downtown Line, takes on a rather earthy approach in both decor and food.

At las(t), not the usual repetitive brunch fares seen in the usual cafes. Presentation is straight-forward and you can tell they are not going for the bang-on-being-instagrammble direction. (Thank goodness.)

Think Salmon Soba Noodles ($17), Summer Chicken Stew ($17), Buttermilk Waffles ($12-$12.50) with various sauces and atas dishes (we mean Atlas dishes): ATLAS Super-Bowl ($17) and ATLAS Butterscotch Banana Pancake ($18).

DW Workshop
41 Rochester Drive Singapore 138582
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 11:00pm (Mon – Fri), 9:30am till late (Sat, Sun, PH)
https://dwworkshop.com

Cafe + Bistro + Design Workshop In A Colonial House
DW Workshop houses several concepts in one location. It is hard to gasp at first glance what they encompass, but it is like a café, brunch place, healthy dining restaurant and design workshop studio all within a heritage house.

For weekdays, lunch bowls ($19.00 each) are offered, with options such as Savoury Grilled Chicken, Grilled Ribeye, Pan Seared Duck Breast, Salmon in a Bag and Sweet Potato Frittata.

The Weekend Brunch choices sound quite enticing, that I wished they offered this during weekdays as well.

Other than the Signature Potato Rosti with Poached Eggs ($21.00), my favourite was the Crab Salad Croissant ($24.00) with fresh picked sweet crab in Japanese mayo in a freshly baked butter croissant.

Punch
32 North Canal Road, Singapore 059288 (Clarke Quay MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tue-Fri), 8am – 6:30pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon

This Cafe Packs A Punch
A courtyard in an open space with natural lighting, greenery, clean-contemporary look with Aussie vibes should be a big ‘punch’, I mean hit, among the foodies and executives working at the CBD.

Punch at North Canal Road (opposite Kreta Ayer Police Post) is a short walk away from Raffles Place. The décor of the café is as important to the owners behind Ronin Café and The Plain, who also run an interior design studio.

We loved the bite-sized Doughnuts that came with 3 flavour options: Jam, Nutella, Custard.

Each of them had a golden brown crisp, fluffy texture and was generously piped smooth fillings that oozed out at the ends.

Butterknife Folk
238 River Valley Road Singapore 238296
Tel: +65 6734 7855
Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm (Mon – Fri), 10am – 9pm, Closed Sun

Humble Cakes & Gelato Cafe With Arresting Bakes
While the shop boasts of a relatively small space and is mainly a takeaway concept (you can sit by the counter at the back which can occupy 3 to 4 people), there are glimpses that has reminded us of Adriano Zumbo’s bakes.

Top on the list is the Marletti’s Mountain ($8), the name a tribute to the owner’s favourite Pâtissier from Paris – Carl Marletti.

The show-stopper was the Fruit Loop ($8), looking like a glossy-donut version of the favourite cereal type.

The real surprise comes when you cut across the lemon mousse cake, revealing a strawberry jelly centre, seated on pistachio sponge.

Butterknife Folk is certainly very promising. we do think they can afford to be more experimental and fun to push that boundary.

Chong Wen Ge Café
168 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 068619 (next to Thian Hock Keng Temple, 5 minutes walk from Telok Ayer MRT Downtown Line)
Tel: +65 8688 3028
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 6pm, 9am – 6pm Daily

Peranakan Café Next To A Temple, Within The CBD
Chong Wen Ge Café’s 崇文阁 location alone may raise a few eyebrows – right next to Thian Hock Keng Temple, and that is still within Singapore’s CBD we are talking about.

There are no typical brunch and waffle items here, but local delights that can literally delight many locals (okay, pardon the pun) – Nyonya Laksa ($8.80), Nyonya Mee Siam ($6.80), Satay Bee Hoon ($8.80), Nyonya Curry Chicken ($9.80), Nonya Otah Sandwich ($4.80) and a selection of Peranakan Kuehs (cakes).

While service can take a while, and not all the noodle dishes are on point, the Nonya Kuehs are worth the walk in.

The Botanist
74 Neil Road Singapore 088839 (Outram Park)
Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Tues – Sun)

Last drink order: 5.30pm
Last food order: 5pm

Brunch Classics In A Garden
Botanist is run by the same team behind Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, Alchemist and Knockhouse Supply Co, so people would come with a certain expectation, especially for their coffee.

For seating areas, the garden part has a more outdoorsy, relaxing vibes, though it can be rather warm.

The Botanist offers Aussie-Melbourne inspired brunch classics of Baked Egg ($19), French Toast ($18), Maple Pancake ($18), Breakfast Platter ($23), Croque Madame ($18), Corn Fritters ($18) and Corned Beef Hash ($19).

The coffee, exclusively roasted in-house, can be described as a comforting cup – bold, low acidity, with sweet, chocolate undertones.

Epiphyte
47 Neil Road 088827 Singapore (Near to Outram Park MRT Station)
Tel: +65 9451 8873
Opening Hours: 10am – 11pm (Mon – Thurs), 10am – 1am (Fri – Sat)

Garden Themed Café with Gorgeous Galaxy Cake
The owners believe that dining becomes a personal affair here, and they try to appeal to the 5 senses. (It is true, there was a light fragrance of jasmine when we entered the shop.)

There is an indoor vertical garden (lovely orchids) and art pieces from the co-owner’s personal collection.

Their signature items and desserts include the Pink Risotto ($22), Chicken with Indonesian Spices ($21), Grilled Striploin ($27), Crab Cakes ($13), Twilight which is a ‘galaxy’ style chocolate cointreau mousse cake ($10) and Terrarium ($8, +$3 for shot of rum).

The Terrarium, a floral-garden dessert which blends with the vibes and feel, is the most widely instagrammed dessert here so far. Not my favourite though.

The Twilight containing cointreau orange curd, chocolate sponge, and marbling chocolate mousse, this was probably one of the best versions of “Galaxy Cake we had in Singapore.

Ollella and The Pourover Bar
Residence@Somme, 3 Petain Road, #01-01, Singapore 208108 (Farrer Park MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Wed-Mon), Closed Tue
https://www.facebook.com/Ollella-993784270680749/?fref=ts

Colourful Choux Pastries, With Pourover Coffee From The Pourover Bar
Opened by two sisters from Indonesia, Ollella is the combination of their names – OLLyvia and MarcELLA.

Ollella’s flavours include Vanilla ($4),Apple Cinnamon ($4), Raspberry ($5), Lemon Meringue ($4), Matcha Azuki ($4.50), Tiramisu ($5) and lastly Dark Chocolate ($4.50), listed in terms in flavours intensity.

This is a collaboration with The Pourover Bar, so fret-not if you need some coffee.

Coffee is served The Pourover Bar with coffee beans from Ninety Plus Coffee, opened by fashion blogger Karen Ashley Ng (better known as @renzze) and Raphael Ou.

A cup of handpoured coffee will vary from $8 to $45 depending on the beans. Yes, $45.

We enjoyed the Cold Brew with milk ($9) made from Ethiopia Hachira N2 with a smooth and silky texture.

Here’s my wish list for 2017: To see more cafes serving locally inspired food.

Kanshoku Ramen Bar ION Orchard – Truffle Dry & Truffle Broth Ramen Going Strong

$

0

Kanshoku Ramen Bar is popular for being one of the first (and most successful) ramen shops in Singapore to introduce Truffle Ramen – in both dry and broth versions. Posts went viral , word got out, and queues started to form.

It has opened its 3rd branch at ION Orchard at #B3-18 (above MUJI).

I remember the first experience when I found Kanshoku Ramen at Metropolis. It was a purposeful visit, as I was curious.

At a time when Japanese-originated ramen shops were in a rage, a local brand became both refreshing and risky.

Their Hakata-style noodles wasn’t fanciful, ingredients straight-forward, but I was then impressed how simple yet tasty the bowl was. The blog entry then was titled ”One Of The Best New Openings”.

Fast forward a year plus later, owner Melvin was nervous when he knew I visited the 2nd branch of Kanshoku Ramen at OrchardGateway anonymously a few times.

”How? My truffle ramen.”

I frankly told him, I liked it, but not enough. And suggested adding an egg and some meat.

Which he did. And it was much, much better after.

Kanshoku means ‘to finish eating every last bit of your food’ in Japanese. It wasn’t perfect in the beginning, but the team kept on pressing on.

One valuable point is, they are receptive to customers’ feedback (provided they are constructive of course).

Here are some of the recommended items from Kanshoku Ramen Bar:

Truffle Ramen Dry ($16.90)
THE ramen that propelled Kanshoku to further fame. Some friends liked it precisely because the dish of hot, straight, thin noodles reminded them of Truffle Angel Hair Pasta (of this famous French restaurant), except that this is hot.

There is a balanced combination of kombu, shaved black truffle and truffle oil – when tossed would emit that light alluring aroma.

The current incarnation also included an onsen egg and torched caramelized charshu marinated in a slight sweetish sauce. Wonderful additions.

Truffle Broth Ramen ($17.90)
Camps are divided. There is sizable group that preferred the Truffle Broth Ramen.

Initially, I thought that the soup was on the light side, but recently the broth was creamier and richer, but still could go a notch higher. The taste does grow on you.

Add $2.00 for a premium ramen egg from Japan, specially marinated for over an hour to make the bowl complete.

(You tell me which you prefer.)

Signature Kanshoku Ramen ($13.90)
The signature ramen that started it all. The tonkotsu based broth is first boiled over 8 hours with filtered water without the addition of added salt and preservatives.

My favourite part is the Hakata style noodles – long, thin, firm threads which are produced fresh daily. They are springy, al dente with a good bite.

Black Garlic Ramen ($14.90)
I prefer this version that the signature (which can be on the light side). The black garlic mayu adds a layer of complexity and more depth to the broth.

Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen ($14.90)
I have the feeling this spicy ramen threads on the safe side, refusing to push to the deeper end (of spiciness) for fear that customers may not be able to take it. You think?

Shoyu Ramen ($13.90)

Black Truffle Edamame ($5.90)
Still worth a try, for that novelty factor.

Pork Gyoza ($5.90)
Oh, this is so much better than before (which was pale and limpy). Could have more crisp, but at least the inside was wet and juicy. MUST have while it’s hot.

Nagoya Chicken Wings ($6.90)

Did I mention that the ramen bowls here at specially imported from Japan, in my favourite blue. Anyway…

Two years ago, I wrote that Kanshoku Ramen had “No Michelin star, or some award-winning chef’s backing… but is easily one of the best new ramen openings.”

Interesting, how this, is still relevant to its 3rd branch at ION Orchard.

Central Perk Singapore – F.R.I.E.N.D.S Café With Nostalgic Space, Decent Food But Expensive

$

0

[REVIEW] Some people have ‘crazy’ dreams, like this. So yes, a F.R.I.E.N.D.S themed café Central Perk Singapore has finally opened at Central Mall Magazine Road (Note: NOT Clarke Quay Central, though they are nearby.)

Did Central Perk Singapore come 10, or 15 years too late?

How many times do friends gather and say, ”Hey, let’s open a café…”, throw out insane ideas, and one of them actually come to fruition?

Even if they do, how many of such businesses last?

The team led by a rather young (28) Jit Min has made this possible, through a crowd-funding exercise which led to the interest of investors.

Central Perk is THE coffee house from the once-super-popular TV sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S, in which the show’s characters were often seen hanging together.

This is the only cafe outside of the United States that has been granted the intellectual property rights by Warner Brothers. You have to give it to the local team who has made something possible out of initial imagination.

To be honest, I had my reservations. So when my friend texted me to ”Let’s queue together”, I had the inkling it won’t be as packed, despite the media fanfare and hype. I wasn’t totally wrong.

Fans can take a wonderful memory lane at Central Perk, get into the nostalgia mode, as much attention has been put into the details and décor.

There are pieces of Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross found all around. Some iconic features include Monica’s kitchen, Rachel’s runaway wedding dress, Phoebe’s cat (found in the guitar case), Chandler and Joey’s foosball table.

The dishes on the menu are decided after the team watched the entire show and picked out representative food items.

The mains include Janice’s Oh My God Baby Back Ribs ($39), Ahh Unagi ($36), Phoebe’s I Can’t Eat Meat Steak ($69), Chandler’s Thanksgiving Whole Roasted Chicken ($36), Joey’s Fisherman Stew ($38) and Joey’s You’re My Everest Turkey ($36).

Prices look way up north, and are probably 30-40% than the typical café benchmark level. Jit Min explained that this price range was due to the high franchise fee.

I ordered a “You’re My Lobster Salad” ($32), Monica’s Marinara Pasta ($32) and Iced Matcha Coffee ($8). After taxes, the bill came up to about $80. The heart did ache a little.

Food wise, a couple of hits and misses, but considered respectable for a themed café (Give and take, yah?)

My favourite was the “You’re My Lobster Salad” ($32) in which the pan-seared lobster was fleshy and sweet. Then again, at this price, I probably won’t order this again.

The Monica’ Marinara ($32) had a good al dente bite to the pasta, though overall could have been saucier.

Didn’t quite fancy the Phoebe’s Mushroom Soup ($15) which had a well, smoothie-like consistency.

Good to know: There are 6 different blends of coffee profiled to the 6 different F.R.I.E.N.D.S. characters, sourced from 4 coffee roasters.

The greatest attraction to me was the space, how it was recreated from the original sitcom, with the cool chill-out vibes. I could imagine getting a couple of friends to hang out for coffee and long chats to talk about the good old days.

Sustainability in a long run (and for long, I mean 1-2 years) is probably one of Central Perk’s Singapore greatest challenge, considering how fickle minded the modern consumers can be, and how trends come and go faster than superficial friendships.

Will you be there for them?

LeTAO Singapore – Famous Hokkaido Cheesecake Shop Opening At Ion Orchard, 8th December

$

[NEW] Another Hokkaido food product is coming to Singapore. Other than BAKE Cheese Tart, that is.

LeTAO which sells one of Japan’s most popular Cheesecake, will open a takeaway kiosk at basement 1 of ION Orchard.

From the Otaru city in Hokkaido, LeTAO is famous for its Double Fromage – a double layered cheesecake in which the upper layer compromises of creamy smooth no-bake cheesecake, and the lower layer is rich, tasty baked cheesecake.

Quality ingredients of fresh cream, wheat, and eggs from Hokkaido are used, while mascarpone from the Lombardy region in North Italy by Ambrosi gives the dessert a rich, milky flavour.

The cakes made in Hokkaido are frozen with a special technology, then sent over to Singapore.

Similar to Bangkok’s branches, the outlet at ION Orchard will be a takeaway kiosk, selling each cake at $28.

While BAKE Cheese Tart is still generating a short queue, the amount of attention on LeTAO may not be as strong due to its price point, and lack of mass appeal.

The shop will open December 8th.

10 Must-Have Christmas Takeaway Goodies From Mandarin Orchard Singapore + Festive Special At Triple Three

$

0

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

If you are searching for Christmas roasts, log cakes and pastries for the year-end Christmas house parties and office celebrations, consider getting them from Mandarin Orchard Singapore.

From 23rd November till 31st of December 2016, there will be a special Festive Booth at the Level 1 Lobby, and at Coffee & Crust Level 5. These booths are set up for you to get your Christmas Takeaway Goodies conveniently.

For the Festive savouries, other than the signatures of Premium Honey Glazed Gammon Ham and Roasted USA Turkey, look out for the NEW items of Roasted London Duck with Chinese Herbs, Roasted US Black Angus Beef Rib Eye with Green Peppers, Baked Norwegian Salmon Fillet with Watercress Crust, and Roasted Sakura Chicken with Konbu-soy Glaze.

Not forgetting the sweets of Valrhona Delicious Dulcey Yule Log, Red Velvet Yule Log, Hazelnut Mango Yule Log and other traditional Christmas pies, chocolate, cookies and cakes.

Here are some 10 of the Delectable Takeaway Delights From Mandarin Orchard Singapore:

Premium Honey Glazed Gammon Ham ($318 for 4.2 – 4.5kg boneless, $415 for 6-7kg bone-in)
A perpetual Christmas favourite – golden brown and gorgeous on the outside, succulent and decadent on the inside.

Will be a show-stopping ‘centrepiece’ during the Christmas dinners.

You can have it hot with special homemade honey pineapple sauce, or cold wrapped in your favourite sandwich bread.

Roasted London Duck with Chinese Herbs ($85 for 2.8kg)
Something different for this year? Since London Duck is very popular in Singapore…

This London Roast Duck is newly introduced, created by chefs at Shisen Hanten – the 2 star Michelin Restaurant. In fact, the only 2-star Michelin Chinese restaurant in Singapore.

This Irish duck meat is meticulously marinated, cooked in Chinese herbs, and tenderly soft. (Think your parents should enjoy this.)

Oven Roasted Berkshire Pork Rack with Yuzu-Himalayan Salt Crust ($230 for 3kg)
Berkshire pork is known as the “Kobe beef of pork”, boosting more flavour, juiciness and richness than the regular pork.

This comes encapsulated with a Himalayan salt crust with hints of sweet-tangy-bitter yuzu. When cut open, reveals a slight pink centre.

Spread some of the morel mushroom yuzu sauce over for a more tantalising serve.

Roasted US Black Angus Beef Rib Eye with Green Peppers ($270 for 3kg boneless, $428 for 3.5kg bone-in)
The (bone-in) rib eye is the fattiest of high-end steaks, also with the boldest, most intense flavours.

Therefore, I find the meat good enough to eat on its own.

If not, pair with some Roasted Forest Mushrooms with Herbs, Roasted New Potatoes or Assorted Vegetables to balance the richness off.

Roasted USA Turkey ($218 for 6kg M, $238 for 8kg L)
The signature Thanksgiving dish.

To be honest, I am not usually the biggest fan of turkey meat, but this was really not bad – moist enough, and didn’t have that overly meaty savour.

Tastily flavoured with herbs and chestnut stuffing.

Baked Norwegian Salmon Fillet with Watercress Crust ($135 for 1.5kg)
Great for the family, and one of my personal favourites – also because it is rich in protein and omega 3.

I liked that when the fish was cut apart, the meat was moist and flaky with a thin crisp crust. To be accompanied with mustard dill sauce.

Assorted Sushi Platter ($98 for Deluxe, $130 for Premium, 50 pieces)
Sushi platters work best for my Christmas parties, popular with guests who will take a ‘pop’ at their favourites of salmon and tamago.

Valrhona Delicious Dulcey Yule Log ($80 for 1kg)
Making a sweet comeback to Mandarin Orchard’s festive menu is the Valrhona Delicious Dulcey Yule Log.

Chocolate lovers would be able to appreciate this ensemble of chocolate cremeux, with sweet and salty candied hazelnuts on moist flourless sponge, topped with praline mousse.

Perfect indulgence.

Red Velvet Yule Log ($80 for 1kg)

Hazelnut Mango Yule Log ($80 for 1kg)
These two beautifully created desserts of the Red Velvet Cheese Yule Log and Mango Hazelnut Yule Log, have also been popular with customers for that sweet ending to the festive meal.

Other than the Yule Logs, other favourites for takeaways include Gingerbread House ($38), Christmas Stollen ($38 for 500g), Christmas Pudding ($28 for 400g), Festive Chocolate Puzzles ($25 for 150g), and Festive Praline Box ($35 for 12 pcs).

Kyu Coffee Bar – Minimalist Coffee Kiosk At Raffles Place, Outside Prudential Tower

$
0
0

[NEW] CBD friends will get another choice for your caffeine fix, with coffee kiosk Kyu Coffee Bar right outside Prudential Tower along Cecil Street.

The name “KYU” is the Japanese numeric for “nine”.

That is because Kyu Coffee Bar is the project launch by Nine Press Group, which focuses on spreading coffee knowledge. (One of the directors is C.R @xlbcr, and I have mad love for his food photos.)

Like a minimalist theme Japanese café, the appearance and offering of Kyu Coffee Bar is simple.

Selection includes White Coffee roasted by Knockhouse ($5, $6), Black Coffee ($4.50, $5.50), Mocha ($5.50), Matcha ($5.50), Chocolate ($5.50) with iced versions costing a dollar more.

Drip Coffee (roasted by Knockhouse and Nylon) is also available at $4 – $6, along with light bites such as Earl Grey Tea Cake and Croissant from PAUL.

As I do buy coffee often enough Raffles Place, I thought that the price range could be a 50c to a dollar more than the average, especially when this is not a sit-down concept.

I am a fan of Knockhouse’s coffee (available at Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, The Botanist) so it was not difficult for me to like Kyu’s cup, which had a deep yet balanced touch.

Time flies! It is time to get into the Christmas and New Year festivities, and many of my friends are already planning where to go for their ‘traditional’ Christmas Buffet meals.

Perched on the 32nd floor, Seasonal Tastes at The Westin Singapore boasts of a wonderful view of Singapore’s CBD area.

This is one Christmas feast with festive specialities, a live interactive kitchen concept, tantalising desserts and breath-taking views of the Singapore city skyline.

You can expect hearty roasts, yule log cakes, Christmas-themed desserts (some of them are really cute), and a selection of Seasonal Tastes signatures.

Executive Chef Aaron Foster is dedicated to prepare some of his personal favourites and home-style comfort food, like what his own family would eat back home at Ontario Canada.

If you are not going down during the exact Christmas and New Year periods, you can still expect a “crab-tivating” selection of seafood and mouth-watering crab dishes such as the perennial favourites of Chilli Crabs and Salted Egg Prawns. Available daily, 6pm to 10pm.

Christmas Eve Lunch Buffet

Christmas Eve Dinner Buffet, Christmas Brunch Buffet and Christmas Day Dinner Buffet

End it with a selection of desserts such as Port Wine-poached Pears, Chocolate, Whiskey & Chestnut Yule Log and Vanilla, Raspberry & Pistachio Cheese Yule Log.

Free-flow champagne, beers, wines, soft drinks and juices. What a way to celebrate!

New Year’s Eve Dinner Buffet
Goodbye 2016. Hello 2017. End the last and start the next year right with offerings such as 24-hour Slow-roasted Prime Rib, Jerusalem Artichoke Soup, and Mortadelle-stuffed Squid with Salsa Rosa.

For seafood lovers, the special highlights include fresh picks of oysters and prawns like Marmite Baked Oysters, Oyster Rockefeller, and Prawn Thermidor.

Here are some of the highlights from Seasonal Tastes Christmas Buffet Feast!

Whole Roasted Turkey wrapped with Smoked Bacon. Turkey wrapped with bacon and roasted. The result? A bird which picked up both the bacon and smokey flavours.

Leg of Ham stuffed with Turkey and Roasted Peppers. Do you call this a “Turham”? Absolutely glistening in the sticky glaze, succulently stuffed.

Slow-roasted Striploin with Black Pepper Crust

Whole Baked Salmon with Curry Scallops. Simple, fresh-tasting, amazing depth of flavours.

Whiskey & Chestnut Yule Log. Rich, creamy, decadent in chocolate, slightly alcoholic. What’s there not to love?

Raspberry & Pistachio Cheese Yule Log. The inner cheese mousse was soft and creamy, with an inner layer of tanginess.

Port Wine-poached Pears. Such a Christmassy-treat, and haven’t had this in a while. In a deep elegant maroon red. Tip: Eat this with some the gelato on the side.

Snowman Cake Pops. These are cute and popular with the kids.

Blueberry Crème Brulee. I liked this a lot, and the blueberries added a touch of citrus-sweet bite.

10 New Cafes In Singapore December 2016 – DOTS, FRIENDS, Gudetama, Japan Rail Café. Very Exciting

I pen this down on a rainy afternoon of December 1st. This monthly cafe guide, which I have pushed for to be delivered consistently the 1st day of the month since years back, has literally become a kind of a diary for me. A reminder that the year is going past, fast.

Since then, many other websites have also started a monthly compilation. It’s great, provides all of us with more points of reference.

This IS the month of Christmas, a reminder that sometimes it would be good to gather friends to have a chat over coffee. A SLOW one. No constant checking of handphones, no Instagram-food-over-friends, no rush.

Anyway…pardon me, it’s just me getting into the December mood, while I am still imagining myself having iced latte at some faraway place.

10 New Cafes In Singapore December 2016 – DOTS, FRIENDS, Gudetama, Japan Rail Café. Very Exciting

dal.komm Coffee
The Centrepoint #01-01/06 and #01-102/103, 176 Orchard Road
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm Daily

Fans of Descendants Of The Sun DOTS should be familiar with this café, where “Big Boss” Song Joong Ki had coffee with Song Hye-kyo in the drama series, several times.

The good news is, the Korean cafe is going to open in Singapore at The Centrepoint this December.

Located on the first floor of The Centrepoint, the 3,000 sq ft space will be designed to exude a modern pop vibe, and is decorated with speakers, gallery frames and other unique music-themed ornaments.

Descendants of the Sun fans will be happy to take some photos with the brand’s iconic plushies from the show. Other dal.komm COFFEE merchandise such as mugs and tumblers are also available for purchase from the retail corner. Dal.Komm Coffee

Central Perk Singapore
01-01 Central Mall, 1 Magazine Road Singapore 059567
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

A F.R.I.E.N.D.S themed café Central Perk Singapore has finally opened at Central Mall Magazine Road (Note: NOT Clarke Quay Central, though they are nearby.)

This is the only cafe outside of the United States that has been granted the intellectual property rights by Warner Brothers.

Prices look way up north though. Central Perk Singapore (Central Mall)

Gudetama Café Singapore
Suntec City Mall #01-361/362/363/364 (West Wing), 3 Temasek Boulevard Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 8am – 10pm (Fri – Sun) Last Order 9:30pm

Popular Sanrio Character Gudetama finally has its own café in Singapore at Suntec City. How EGG-citing.

In terms of food, I would say better than Hong Kong’s, more promising than some of the other character cafes in Singapore, but will probably need some tweaking. Some of the savouries were slightly on the saltier side. Cakes could have been more moist.

My personal favourite are the Gude Pudding, “Are You Busy” Burger, and a tie between the Eggs Benedict and Lobster Onsen bisque soup. Gudetama Café (Suntec City)

Amiral Atelier
Paragon Shopping Centre B1-25 Singapore
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

High-end Paragon Mall has quite a new food outlets, one of them is Amiral Atelier, a cakes and chocolate cafe.

The Japanese-French inspired café offers cakes, tarts, eclairs and choux, with a small selection of beverages such as black coffee, cold brew tea and matcha tea.

Expect the likes of Fig Éclair ($7.50), Vanilla Rum Slice, Gateau de Voyage Chocolate ($9.50), Chocolate Mousse Cake with Coffee and Caramel ($8.50), and Matcha Brownie.

Okay, I honestly think it’s going to be tough for them. Amiral Atelier (Paragon)

The Coconut Club
NO. 6 Ann Siang Hill, Singapore 069787 (Chinatown MRT)
Tel: +65 6635 2999
Opening Hours: 11am – 3pm (Tues – Sat)

The Coconut Club got into the foodie limelight recently with their $12.80 Nasi Lemak, served at the hipster district of Ann Siang Hill.

They specialise in serving up plates of fragrant Nasi Lemak ($12.80), coupled with traditional local sides such as charcoal-grilled Otak Otak ($8.50), Ikan Goreng (market price) and Cendol ($3.80).

Here is what’s so special about the rice: Old crop Thai Jasmine Rice is used. Coconuts are from one specific plantation in Sabak Bernam, and type is called the MAWA (The Malaysian West African strain).

This coconut milk is squeezed in-house, and has a creamier, richer texture. The Coconut Club (Ann Siang)

Tai Cheong Bakery
31 Lorong Liput Singapore 277742 (Holland Village MRT)
Opening Hours: Pastries and Drinks 10am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat, Sun, Eve of PH)
Mains: 11am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 9:30pm

Tai Cheong Bakery has officially opened a NEW Cha Chaan Teng eatery at 31 Lorong Liput Holland Village.
Unlike the outlet at Ngee Ann City, this will be a 60-seater sit-down eatery. This is the brand’s FIRST dine-in concept ever.

Exclusive items to look forward to include a Durian and Cheese tart, just sold at this outlet.

There will be other typical Hong Kong cha chaan teng dishes such as Scrambled Egg Toast Stack with Chicken Chop ($9.50), French Toast ($6.50), Macaroni Soup ($8.50), Three-Egg Macaroni Soup with Luncheon Meat ($8.50), and six-hour braised Beef Brisket Curry Rice ($10.90+).

The Botanist
74 Neil Road Singapore 088839 (Outram Park)
Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Tues – Sun)

Last drink order: 5.30pm
Last food order: 5pm

The Botanist (Neil Road)

Kyu Coffee Bar
30 Cecil Street, Prudential Tower Level 1, S049712 (Raffles Place MRT Exit F)
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 4:30pm (Mon – Fri), Closed PH & Weekends

CBD friends will get another choice for your caffeine fix, with coffee kiosk Kyu Coffee Bar right outside Prudential Tower along Cecil Street.

Kyu Coffee Bar (Raffles Place)

Sugarhaus
10 Jalan Serene, #01-03a, Serene Centre S(258748)
Tel: +656314 2247
Opening Hours: 12 noon – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Galaxy with a difference. This comes with Taro.

Sugargaus’ Taro Galaxy ($8.80 per slice) comes with a stunning galaxy mirror glaze over layers of taro sponge and swiss meringue buttercream.

Though I found this slightly too sweet for my liking, so not exactly yum-yum for me.I expected that taro layer to be softer and more moist (even like orh nee), which would bring the overall taste a level up.

Plus point: their cakes are supposedly made traditionally from scratch without using any pre-mix.

Japan Rail Café
Tanjong Pagar Centre, Level 1
5 Wallich Street, #01-20 Tanjong Pagar Centre Singapore 078883

The East Japan Railway Company, also known as JR EAST, will be opening a Japan-bound themed café at the ground level of the new Tanjong Pagar Centre.

It is anticipated to open this coming December (4th December) and will be connected to Tanjong Pagar MRT Station.

The upcoming Japan Rail Café will provide Japanese food, kawaii Japanese items, travel information to Japan, and a convenient rail ticketing service for Japan rail passes.

That means you can purchase first a variety of train passes before you get over to Japan (and maybe not needing to queue that long there).

10 Must-Try NEW Signature Dishes From Capitol Piazza

$

0

If you are looking for restaurants and cafes near town that are not the typical choices, Capitol Piazza offers number of dining choices not found anywhere else.

Famous brands that arrived overseas to set up their FIRST outpost in Singapore include Angelina, Dazzling Café, Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant, Naughty Nuri’s and Teuscher Chocolates.

For new-to-market restaurants and cafes, you can find 1933 By Toast Box, Equilibrium, Ramen & Tonkatsu Ma Maison, Ryu’s Dining & Bar, and Tap Craft Beer Bar.

That is quite a number of refreshing choices.

For familiar favourites, go for Food Republic, Hoshino Coffee, J-Story, Oriole Coffee + Bar, and Nalan Restaurant.

Here are 10 Must-Try NEW Signature Dishes From Capitol Piazza:

Dazzling Café
Unit No: 01-85 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 3310

This is popular Taiwanese brand Dazzling Café’s first foray into Singapore. The chic meets cutesy café is famous for their Shibuya Honey Toasts which boost of fun innovative flavours and instagrammable platings.

Friends and couples love to hang out here for relaxing afternoon teas, sharing pastas, desserts and calories.

Do you know: There are ‘4 generations’ of Dazzling’s Honey Toast, from strips, cubed, stacked ones, and those topped with whipped cream.

Featured Dish: Dazzling Potato Doughnut with Bratwurst Filling ($21.00)
This is looking quite the bomb. The crisp hand-made potato doughnut arrived topped with soft boiled egg and apple caramel sauce. Cut it apart, and let the oozing yolk mix with the shallot confit.

That was not the end of the surprise.

Within the donut was juicy pork bratwurst, making it a slightly sweetish-savoury treat.

Angelina
Unit No: 01-82 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 0481

Angelina is the Parisian tearoom famous for their Old-Fashioned Hot Chocolate “L’Africain”, signature cake Mont Blanc and brunch items.

The hot chocolate remains as one of my favourites, made with three different kinds of African cocoa from Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoir, served in an elegant pitcher alongside a little cup of whipped cream.

Do you know: Angelina has a history from 1903, where Proust and Coco Chanel have been customers at the tearoom room at Rue Du Rivoli in Paris. “Angelina” was named after the founder’s daughter-in-law, Angeline Rumpelmayer.

Featured Dish: Roasted Chicken Supreme, seasonal Vegetables and creamy poultry gravy ($24.00)
Other than sweets, Angelina does serve a range of savoury and brunch food, such as Croque Madame, Parisian Club Sandwiches, Truffle Omelette, Wild Mushroom Risotto and Truffle Ravioli.

The Roasted Chicken was cooked classic French style, and in a deboned manner for easier consumption. Pour over some creamy poultry gravy for a moister and tantalising finish.

1933 by Toast Box
Unit No: 01-83 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 3660

1933 is so named because the cuisine is inspired from local favourites from the 1930s, such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, Nanyang Curry Chicken, Handmade Yam Cake, Hainanese-style Satay and Laksa Pasta.

Enjoy dishes of Asian flavours with Western influences or all-day breakfast favourites, and sip on their signature Nanyang Coffee as you unwind at 1933.

Do You Know: This is a café concept launched by the popular Toast Box brand.

Featured Dish: Hainanese Chicken Rice ($12.90)
To be honest, the Hainanese Chicken Rice was not too bad and better than expected.

Chicken was prepared and poached in the traditional Hainanese style, therefore retained the flavours of the meat and moisture.

It was served with fragrant rice cooked in rich chicken broth, a side of bean sprouts, with special chilli-lime and fresh ginger dipping sauces.

Naughty Nuri’s
Unit No: 01-84 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 7955

The famous signature pork ribs which originated from Ubud, Indonesia. This is Naughty Nuri’s first and only restaurant in Singapore currently.

Although Naughty Nuri’s Singapore specialises in grilled meats, it also offers an array of Indonesian classic dishes such as Wagyu Short Rib Rendang, Nasi Goreng and Ayam Lemak.

An affordable Nasi Campur lunch set is also available, priced at $12.80++ which includes a choice of Wagyu Short Rib Rendang or Ayam Lemak, Classic Tumis Kacang Panjang , Ikan Billis, Spicy Hijau Chili and clear soup.

Do You Know: The name came from the owner’s Javanese chef-wife, Isnuri Suryatmi.

Featured Dish: Signature St.Louis Full Rack ($24.90 Half Rack, $38.90 Full Rack)
The signature ribs was marinated with authentic Balinese spices, glazed with a secret ‘Pangang’ sauce before grilling over charcoal flames for a wholesome smoky flavour.

When put to the test, the ribs were fork-tender and fell apart almost immediately. There must be some magic added to the sauce – it was freaking good.

Equilibrium Modern Italian Bacaro & Ristorante
Unit No: 01-86 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 4069

Equilibrium offers a menu of popular cicchettis, antipastos, mains and desserts cooked using modern techniques. You may get some exciting flavours of pastas and pizzas over there. If not, you can also create your own pizzas with 5 toppings of your choice.

The bistro also incorporates a bespoke bar serving up creative handcrafted cocktails, perfect for large groups and private functions.

Do You Know: Equilibrium is by the same team behind popular Supply & Demand, which was just awarded “Best Western Casual Restaurant” by the Epicurean Star Awards.

Featured Dish: Squid Ink Risotto with Seafood ($29.00)
NEW on the menu, the Risotto was simmered with squid ink, white wine, seafood such as prawns and calamari, and topped with shaved Grana Padano (a semi-fat cheese from Italy).

The squid ink added an inky black sheen to the risotto, which also gave a slight salty flavour which paired well with the seafood.

Ryu’s Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar
Unit No: 01-87 | Galleria
Tel: +65 6384 9087

This Japanese restaurant is quite under-the-radar but worth a visit. The first venture out of Japan, Ryu’s specialise in traditional Japanese cuisine and omakase meals at reasonable prices.

Some of the popular selections include Okamochi Bara Chirashi-Sushi Set, Stewed Iberian Pork set, Beef Stew Set, Nizakana Set, Japanese Grilled Chicken Set, Special Tendon Set and Vegetables Tendon Set.

Do You Know: Ryu’s is fully owned by a Japanese family with 3 other restaurants in Tokyo, backed by 33 years of operating experience.

Featured Dish: Okamochi Barachirashi ($45.00)
Ryu’s Okamochi Barachirashi Set was served in a traditional 3-drawer wooden ‘Okamochi’ box, hardly seen around in Singapore.

The sashimi slices of tuna, scallop, greater amberjack and shrimp were fresh-tasting, imported from Tsukiji Market, matched with sweet sticky sushi rice lined with roe, egg and marinated mushrooms.

The other two drawers contained grilled chicken with salad, and appetizers. So while the set seemed slightly expensive, the number of items they offered made it value for its money.

Nalan Restaurant
Unit No: B2-54 | Neue

Need to find an Indian vegetarian restaurant to host guests?

Established in 2009, Nalan is one of Singapore’s most known contemporary Indian vegetarian restaurants, which serves up an array of North and South Indian cuisine.

Get your fix of Biriyani Poori, Rava Thosai, Pongal, Idly, Uthappam, and Paneer Tikka Masala here.

Do You Know: Nalan used to be located at Funan Centre, and has moved over to Capitol Piazza.

Featured Dishes: Gobi Manchurian ($12.00) & Paneer Fried Rice ($11.00)
You get a home-cooked experience here, where every dish is cooked to order.

Two of their recommendations include Gobi Manchurian, a deep fried cauliflower sautéed in schezwan spicy sauce which is not quite what you would have expected in an Indian dish; and Paneer Fried Rice – grated cottage cheese tossed with basmati rice and soya sauce.

Ramen & Tonkatsu Ma Maison
Unit No: B2-51 | Neue
Tel: +65 6384 6211

Ma Maison, known for their Japanese-Western cuisine, Tonkatsu and gorgeous Japanese fruit tarts has opened a ramen restaurant at Capitol Piazza.

The soup is specially cooked from “Japanese domestic pork bones”, heated for 10 hours to create a creamy white coloured broth. This version lighter than the usual soup so it would be perfect to pair it up with a Tonkatsu pork cutlet.

Do You Know: This is Ma Maison’s first official foray to ramen in Singapore.

Featured Dish: Hokkaido Cheese Tonkotsu Ramen ($17.80)
CHEESE Ramen?! Yes, the signature is the Ma Maison Original Creamy Cheese Ramen, where the handmade cheese is imported from a farm from Hanabatake Bokujo, Hokkaido.

What you get is grated cheese on top of the noodles and tonkotsu soup. Stir it in to create a creamy slight-salty cheese soup base, which is kind of an unusual taste.

Hoshino Coffee
Unit No: B2-55 | Neue
Tel: +65 6384 5131

Famous for “Hand-dripped” coffee and Western style Japanese dishes, some of my favourite to order at Hoshino Coffee include the Hoshino Pot-Baked Curry Rice, Lobster Bisque Spaghetti, and Tonkatsu Curry Rice.

Featured Dish: “Omu Rice” & Angus Beef Steak Plate with Salad ($18.80)
To celebrate Hoshino Coffee’s 4th year in Singapore, they have come out with a number of NEW dishes which include Hamburg Steak Plate ($17.80), Angus Beef Steak Plate ($21.80), Beef Stew Plate ($18.80), Beef Stew “Omu” Rice ($16.80) and “Fuwa Fuwa” Hoshino Souffle with Beef Stew Doria ($17.00).

I was recommended the Omu Rice with Angus Beef Steak, topped with rich roast beef sauce and accompanied by a side salad.

Cut through the omu egg in the middle, which would reveal fragrant fried rice.

How pure and white. The White Forest Christmas Wreath ($42 for 500g, $80 for 1 kg) is a show-stopper as well – a homemade almond cake filled with luscious Amarena cherry coulis and caramel cremeux.

A log cake that looks like a Santa Belt and buckle? Yes, the Praline Chestnut Pear log cake ($42 for 500g, $80 for 1 kg), made of redcurrant genoa sponge with chestnut mousse, William pear confit and intense hazelnut praline crunch is so elegantly presented.

dal.komm Coffee – Descendants Of The Sun Cafe At The Centrepoint

[NEW] ”Ohhhhhh… Every time I see you 그대 눈을 볼 때면…” Cue Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo and dal.komm Coffee.

Fans of the Korean series Descendants Of The Sun should be familiar with the dal.komm coffee chain, where the D.O.T.S characters were seen trashing their hearts out in the café during iconic scenes.

Even dal.komm Coffee has arrived in Singapore at The Centrepoint (opening 3rd Dec), but is it 9 months too late?

Hmm… I suspect there won’t be THAT much fanfare.

D.O.T.S aside, there are a few key features of dal.komm Coffee – specialty Arabica bean brews made with a proprietary selection of three blends K1 to K3; highlights music as a way to enhance the café experience, and a rather big area.

The 3000 square feet space has a section for Open Mic, and there is a ‘hidden’ part at the back (you may miss it), which can be booked and cordoned off for private events.

Highlight drink creations include Hot Choco Cube ($8.50), Iced Honey Grapefruit ($8.90) and Hot Sweet Potato Latte ($7.00, $7.50 for cold).

Some of the drinks such as the Honey Grapefruit ($8.90), though thirst-quenching, are about a dollar or two more than what I will be willing to pay.

The menu also offers a variety of snacks and bites, such as Korean shaved ice dessert Bingsu, flatbreads, sandwiches and pastries.

The recommended is a Cherry Tomato Bingsu ($10.90, $15.90), probably the first of its kind in Singapore, which features freshly cut cherry tomatoes over fluffy shaved ice. The surprise is at the middle with some added plum powder.

D.O.T.S fans may be disappointed to know that the only appearances of Song Joong Ki are in a television showing re-runs of those scenes (*melts*), and that same-old-same-old tie-shoe-lack poster stand.

They should really put the Wolf & Rabbit Plushie Toys EVERYWHERE for more photo moments. Just a suggestion.

But okay lah, got cute Korean baristas. (Why their skin so so so good ah?)

Anyway, I won’t mind sipping through a cup of Cube ($8.50) – blocks of frozen espresso in milk, while taking a respite from busy Orchard Road here.

Japan Rail Café Singapore – JR Pass Ticketing, Retail and Japanese Cafe At Tanjong Pagar Centre

[NEW] Cafes of all different kinds open in Singapore, but a Japan Rail Café seems rather different.

Rail pass ticketing, retail and Japanese style cafe.

This is the first overseas venture by East Japan Railway Company, located on Level 1 of Tanjong Pagar Centre, right next to Tanjong Pagar MRT Station.

Walking in, the first thing you may notice is a convenient rail ticket service for Japan rail passes.

You can purchase exchange orders for JR passes before their trips at the instore rail pass ticketing counter operated by JTB Pte Ltd.

The range of rail passes covers not only JR East but all other passes issued by the 5 other Japan Railway companies namely JR Kyushu, JR West, JR Shikoku, JR Central and JR Hokkaido.

My question was: Why would commuters want to get passes here, rather than in Japan itself?

I have learnt that the passes could be $10 – $20 cheaper when purchased here, and some Singaporeans like to feel ‘safe’ and more prepared before travelling. The type J personality in some can attest to that.

There is also a small retail area which provides a small selection of food items, clothing and accessories, in line with the brand’s “Eki Naka” philosophy, which means “in-station shopping”.

Spotted a section of handkerchiefs, the same brand I actually get from in Toyko. Excited, though more expensive. But of course.

Food wise, the menu did feel rather ‘Western-Japanese’, with a selection of burgers ($19 – $22), sandwiches ($15 – $18) and rice plates ($16 – $18). There is a selection of pastries from Asanoya Bakery.

Slightly on the higher end, that the OLs in the vicinity may think twice before visiting regularly.

The signatures included The Ultimate Burger ($19) – coupling avocado, bacon, cheddar cheese and 160g wagyu beef patty; Kaisen Avocado Don ($18) which comes with Japanese soup for customers to make their own Ochazuke by pouring the soup (original or dashi) over the rice.

Drinks wise, I would recommend the Uji-Maccha Latte ($$6.20).

Will update this post after I tried the food. Opens officially 4th December.

Truffle Dry & Truffle Broth Ramen Going Strong
Kanshoku Ramen Bar is popular for being one of the first (and most successful) ramen shops in Singapore to introduce Truffle Ramen – in both dry and broth versions.

It has opened its 3rd branch at ION Orchard at #B3-18 (above MUJI).

As for the Truffle Ramen Dry ($16.90), some friends liked it precisely because the dish of hot, straight, thin noodles reminded them of Truffle Angel Hair Pasta (of this famous French restaurant), except that this is hot.

There is a balanced combination of kombu, shaved black truffle and truffle oil – when tossed would emit that light alluring aroma.

The current incarnation also included an onsen egg and torched caramelized charshu marinated in a slight sweetish sauce. Wonderful additions. Kanshoku Ramen Bar (ION Orchard)

New Location At Hillview, Truly Singaporean Zhi Char Fare
New Ubin Seafood has moved out of its venue at Sing Ming Road, to Lam Soon Industrial Building No. 63 Hillview Avenue. As the NEW New Ubin Seafood is located at a “canteen” of the industrial building, it will also offer lunch time sets.

However, I couldn’t help feel that the last location was more ‘kampong’, airier, and food just somehow tasted 10%-20% better. Perhaps the team is still getting used to the premises, and hope they can keep up with the consistency. New Ubin Seafood (Hillview Ave)
