[Bangkok] Roast has propelled to be one of the best cafés and brunch place to look out for in Bangkok. Its newest and second branch at The Helix of swanky mall EmQuartier makes it all the convenient to visit, connected right next to Phrom Phong BTS Station. (Read: Original Roast at Thong Lor)
The reasons for its success are aplenty, and I will attribute Roast for having the whole package of excellent coffee, wide-ranging food items, relaxing ambience and professional staff.
It ticks all the right boxes.
The brunch available until 4pm is impressive on its range and components, though taste wise it can be a hit or miss.
There is a slight variation in the familiar brunch items. For example, the Eggs Benedict (280 baht) is served on flaky home-made croissant, or on Crab Cake and potato rosti (360 baht).
Also, there is a strong emphasis on home-made constituents. All the pasta including gnocchi and squid ink fettuccini, bread, fries, and some accompanying sauces are made in-house. Watercress used is specially grown for them by a Bangkok-based urban farmer.
For mains this time, I had the Slow Roasted Fried Chicken (480 baht). This is different from what I am used to. The chicken is first slow-roasted, marinated for 48 hours with buttermilk and homemade hot sauce, coated with a crispy herb batter then fried.
Served to the table with an orange-brown hue, the meat seemed to be on the drier side, but it was soft on texture, mildly tasty on every bite. It did not scream oily-greasy deep fried chicken, but a dish with a lot less guilt.
Also, I noticed the lemon was wrapped in a bag, so that hands remained clean and seeds didn’t fell off when squeezed. A nice touch.
The dessert I had was a brilliant combination – Chocolate Nutella Tart (280 baht) topped with tangy refreshing and cooling grapefruit and grapefruit sorbet.
Coffee wise, you can choose between Roast’s original “Journey Blend” or “Farmer Project” – sourced from Thai farmers, and part of the profits will be shared back to the farmers to improve their working conditions.
One of the signature drinks is the Iced Espresso Latte (120 baht), worked by a reverse engineered process in which expresso is turned into ice cream, then added with warm milk for consumption.
In that way, the coffee does not get diluted over them (if usual ice cubes are used) and you can customised your taste of preference by varying the milk and syrup proportion.
What you sense from Roast is its dedication to doing the cafe business well, from the creation of collaterals, its passion to provide artisanal coffee sourced locally, to its well-crafted menu.
Certainly a strong team behind this place.
