[Bangkok] Rocket Coffeebar S49 at Thong Lor was one of those cafes after entering, I wished immediately that my future home could look like this. “This is simply gorgeous.”
The coffee bar on Sukhumvit Soi 49 looks like it can land on the cover of a home and interior décor magazine.

It was those particular shades of blue – the pale-sky blue and Facebook blue. Seldom would I talk about the colours used in a café, but the blue used in the logo, the apron, the cups hit right at my weak spot.

The ceiling to floor windows allowed natural light to come in, matched with light food furniture, marbled tables, lights hanging from copper pipes and plants ornamenting.
You could seat at a corner, do work, chit-chat for hours away.

Walk up to the second level and the Scandinavian aura would be more apparent. Oh, there is a cosier seating area upstairs, flanked by tall potted plants.

Homely, comfortable, bright, welcoming. I hate to say this, but it can be an instagrammer’s dream cafe.

Just to add on: Rocket’s website contains a blog which entry includes “Seven tips for food instagrams.” Win.

Menu is wide-ranging and leans to a health-slant, offering breakfast bites, salads, sandwiches, pasta, desserts and Nordic dishes. Eggs are so-called produced by “hill tribe hens” which are pasture-based, 100% organic-fed with space to roam freely.

A selection of in-house baked breads and pastries such as Mazarin Almond Tart (90 baht), Cinnamon Bun (75 baht), Chocolate & Oat Ball (60 baht), Chocolate Fudge Brownie (95 baht) and Rocky Road cake (60 baht) are available.

One of the plated desserts, the Ichigo (240 baht) was garden-like in presentation, comprising bright pink strawberry and raspberry sorbet, meringue, vanilla bean pudding, lemon curd.
While slightly on the sweet side, I appreciated its play of textures (loved the sorbet), and springy fruity-tanginess on parts.

The ‘Rocket Exclusive’ Hot Cocoa (180 baht) is part-gimmickry part-substance. You are supposed to stir an Ecuadorian cocoa stick over a large cup of steam milk; the drink would slowly turn brown upon ‘stirring’, and subsequently consumed like a cup of rich cocoa.
To its credit, it did taste not bad, plus you could vary the intensity and add clotted cream.

Rocket Coffeebar is known to use produce its artisanal coffee from carefully selected small-batch roasted beans, then prepared with Synesso Hydra espresso machine (expensive equipment!).
We had the Cold Brew (105 baht for small, 315 for large), medium bodied, slightly acidic and fruity. (Personally preferred Roast’s, but this could also work.
The attention to the details and theme at Rocket 49 is quite amazing. And you would realise the cafe experience is not just about food and coffee, but the being-there. Yes, I will come back here again – it is like home.
