If there is one thing lacking in Saint Pierre Market, it would be variety. Perhaps the word ‘market’ gives the impression that there will be more to expect.

Saint Pierre Market located at Ngee Ann City is the latest concept by Chef Emmanuel Stroobant, who is behind some successful restaurants such as Saint Pierre, Brussels Sprouts, Picotin and Rocks Urban Grlll + Bar.

The location can be hard to find. I met a few different friends there, and they ALL lost their way. Well… Saint Pierre Market is outside Tower B (look out for Loewe), a short walk away from the taxi stand, where Marmalade Toast used to be.

The offering includes soups, salads, sandwiches, pastries, wraps, and some healthier sweet treats, with emphasis on more vegetables, more fruits and less meat.

I do believe there is a time, place and targeted customer base for this market, but not entirely sure if this specific location will help them gain enough traction.

A set of Croissant and Coffee (Nespresso, nevertheless) was at $7. To its credit, we did like its croissant enough, not as buttery as we wished (understandably), but still light and fluffy.

The challenge is that some bakes may not appear as fresh, especially when less covered after hours.

Six types of pre-packed ready-to-eat salads ($12.80-$14.80), with choices of dressings such as Avocado, Balsamic, Caesar, Gomadare, Honey-Mustard and Olive Oil Vinaigrette are supposed to be available.

When we visited, only two types were on the shelf – Chef’s Favourite and Caesar Bacon, which didn’t leave us with much of a choice. (Thank you to the very helpful staff who made recommendations.)

I liked the Chef’s Favourite ($14.80), but perhaps not enough to want to have it again. Price point was one of my consideration. There were some components that I liked, namely the organic chickpea, shaved 24-month-old parmesan cheese, and Avocado dressing. My dining partner was less impressed with its portion.

Saint Pierre Market has an approach to fresh produce, healthy eating and using few elements to create that taste. There are some bright sparks here and there, but I just wished for more.
