Another café at TP? The Larder Café has opened recently at the obscure side of Toa Payoh Central, a 5 minute walk from Toa Payoh Public Library, diagonally opposite Toa Payoh Central Community Club.
Its name “Larder” (pronounced as lahr-der, not ladder) represents a place where food is kept, not exactly a place where food is cooked with lard.

A non-fanciful, in simple conditions, down-to-earth decor, with an earthly tone in their interior: cemented walls and floor, ambient bespoke lighting and pipe structures on the walls.

Their menu selection is overmuch similar to that of JQ Chef Café nearby, with choices such as Smoked Salmon Egg Benedict ($16), Duck Confit ($18), Lamb Rack ($23), Pan Seared Sea Bass ($16).
Isn’t it important for cafes nowadays to differentiate themselves, especially when they are located in such close proximity??

Larder’s brunch menu is served from 11am to 3pm, and dinner menu from 6pm to 9.30pm daily.
The Dowager’s Fingers ($10) caught our attention with their unique name, probably named so because it resembled those 6-inch-long gold nail protectors that imperial women such as Zhen Huan would wear (As seen in Empresses in the Palace).
These are long and thin finger-like finger food (pardon the mouthful) in the form of crispy prawn wanton with honey sesame mayo dip. (You may have seen this style of “Cha Gio” more often in cafes in Bangkok.)

The way of eating it was probably to stick it at the end of our fingers and nibble it (Imagine biting your own nails. Hmm…)
An interesting way of eating an elongated crispy fried wanton with minimum prawn fillings.

The Baked Egg and Bacon Cups ($14) is a different rendition of eggs and bacon shaped in a cup.
This brunch item can be considered a safe option with crispy streaks of bacon, spicy pork sausage and 2 eggs for the protein lovers.

A generous amount of tuna sashimi was served for the Tuna Tartare ($14) with avocado and Dijon mustard.
The contrast between the soft and chewy sashimi with avocado and the crispy baguette toast was somewhat addictive.

To live up to its name whereby Larder could mean ‘a supply of food’, we hoped that The Larder Café could bring something more to their current menu selection.
