Rainbow cakes were once a big fad in Singapore, until they have become too common. The forces of the rainbow is still going strong, with multi-coloured food items from Bagels, Popsicles, Cheese Toast to our traditional Kue Lapis.

Not too big a fan due to its colouring, but they do make happy food. (By the way, I hope someone does a Rainbow Swiss Roll.)

10 Rainbow Foods In Singapore To Colour Your Lives

NOM – Bistro & Bakery
Macpherson Community Club Level 1 – 400 Paya Lebar Way, Singapore 379131
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Closed 1st Tues of every month and selected weekends due to events)

Salted Egg Rainbow Cake
This is the ultimate chut-pattern. Salted egg on rainbow cake, the sweetness of the rainbow cake balanced with the saltiness of the salted egg yolk.

The salted egg yolk is added into the frosting, buttercream made with caramelised butter, curry leaves and of course the salted egg yolk itself!

TheJellyHearts
One Raffles Place #B1-08 Singapore 048616 (Raffles Place MRT)
Tel: +65 6635 1868
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm (Mon-Fri) 10am-4pm (Sat, Sun, PH)

1 Pasir Ris Close, E!hub@Downtown East #02-111, Singapore 519599
Tel : +65 6583 8782
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Fri – Sat), 11am – 9:30pm (Sun – Thurs)

Rainbow Jelly Hearts
It all started with the ‘Jelly Heart’, the piece of cake dessert with jelly on the top, cheesecake at the bottom, typically complete with a heart-shaped strawberry encapsulated in the middle.

I must have seen and eaten different variants of the Jelly Heart dessert over the years, of different colours, fruits, and recipes, but it was TheJellyHearts who probably started this whole trend.

This customised rainbow birthday Jelly Heart is just too pretty, with wordings cut out from fruits. (Cakes from TheJellyHearts are Halal-Certified, can last up to 3 days if stored properly in the refrigerator. )

The Bakery Chef
Blk 161 Bukit Merah Central Singapore 150161
Tel: +65 6273 9211
Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Mon-Thurs), 10am – 9pm (Fri-Sun)

Rainbow Cake
The Bakery Chef may be a small 20-seater café, located at an inconspicuous location of Blk 161 Bt Merah Central, but its bakes easily beat what several other cafes offer. No surprise, as its chef (or chefs) all came from kitchens of various hotels.

The cafe has been on social media of late for its famed Matcha Salted Egg Toast, but let’s not forget about their delicately sweet Rainbow Cake.

There is a new Caramel Cake in an ombre-brown colour, with a surprise in the middle. Not difficult to guess what.

HarriAnn
230 Victoria Street #01-01A Bugis Junction Towers Singapore 188024, and Tiong Bahru Food Centre

Rainbow Lapis
The story of HarriAnn touched me. The stall was founded by couple Harry and Ann who learnt traditional Nonya kueh making from Harry’s mother.

Harry’s mother Mdm Chia had to raise the family single-handedly. Other than its glutinous rice (which tastes almost like what my grandma used to make),

I think our foreign friends should try our local version of the ‘rainbow cake’, the Nonya-style Rainbow Lapis.

Rainbow Kue Lapis
Got these Rainbow Kue Lapis from Rasa Sayang, but cafes such as Le Halo at Jalan Bt Ho Swee also sells the Rainbow Lapis (not sure of their source though).

These Kue Lapis are Indonesian style, made using, using traditional methods that require skills and patience.

Buttery buttery soft, melt in your mouth. I like to eat them straight from the fridge when the slices are slightly cold.

Epicurious Café
#01-02 The Quayside, 60 Robertson Quay, Singapore 238252
Opening Hours: 8.30am – 5pm (Mon), 11.30am – 2.30pm, 6pm – 10pm (Tue-Fri), 8.30am – 10pm (Sat-Sun)

Rainbow Cheese Toast
Using natural ingredients with minimum food colouring, the Rainbow was made up of 5 different colours and flavours.

Pink (beetroot), Orange (carrot), Green (Spinach), Blue (potato and garlic with butterfly pea) and Violet (eggplant and red cabbage).

The toast was crispy and buttery but not all flavours could be detected in the cheese. However, the garlic and the truffle smell pretty much overpowered the rest.

And the plus point was that the cheese wasn’t too jelak (rich) and overwhelming.

I AM
674 North Bridge Rd #01-01 (off Haji Lane) Singapore 188804
Tel: +65 6295 5509
Opening Hours: 11.30am-11pm (Mon-Thurs), 11.30am-1am (Fri/Sat), 11.30am – 10pm (Sun)

Rainbow Mille Crepe
Halal Café I AM has expanded quickly in a short period of time, and a factor for its popularity can be attributed to its colourful Instagram-worthy bakes.

Their photographic Rainbow Mille Crepe Cake ($8.90 per slice, $80 for whole) made by the owner’s mother has white and dark chocolate cream in between layers of crepes, served with chocolate syrup drizzle for a sweet and rich treat.

East Manhattan Bakery Café
19 Lorong Kilat #01-03 Singapore 598120

Tel: +65 9639 4179
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm (Tues-Thurs), 10am – 10pm (Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat), 9am – 7pm (Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/sg.east.manhattan

Rainbow Cheese Cake
Cravings for a slice of New York? East Manhattan Bakery Café attempts to present its side of the big apple with a range of freshly baked artisanal breads, cakes, breakfast items, main courses and American craft beers.

The eye-catching instagram-worthy Rainbow Cheesecake ($6.90) would likely fly off the shelves, but our palates went for the Rum & Raisin and Yuzu Cheesecakes ($6.90).

Nook Cafe & Bar (renamed from Nook D.I.Y. House of Pancakes)
21 Lorong Kilat #01-03 Singapore 598123 (Upper Bukit Timah)
Tel: +65 6466 1811
Opening Hours: 12pm-10pm (Tues-Fri), 10am-10pm (Sat), 10am-7pm (Sun)

Rainbow Pancake
Rainbow Pancake with 6-coloured stacks is a can-order, surely to send your facebook or instagram likes to a record high with the photogenic piece.

As with all rainbow desserts, Uncle Daniel here says this is a tad too sweet for my liking, and too much sugar sends me on a food coma.

Paradise Dynasty
1 Harbourfront Walk, #03-08A, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront MRT)
Tel: +65 6376 8103 (Reservations are accepted)
Opening Hours: Mon – Fri 11.00am – 10.00pm (Last order 9.30pm), Sat, Sun & PH 10.30am – 10.00pm (last order 9.30pm)

Other branches: Ion Orchard (no reservations), Westgate (+65 64659271), Causeway Point (+65 68946322), Lot One (+65 67662380)

Rainbow Xiao Long Bao
Paradise Dynasty is best known to be the first to present these rainbow-hued xiao long bao, in flavours of original, ginseng, foie gras, black truffles, crab roe, cheese, garlic and Szechuan.

For those unaware, their skin is decorated not by artificial colourings, but by natural ingredients such as carrot, spinach and red sorghum. The pork is distinctly tender due to the use of quality five-layer pork and pork neck.

Post will be updated with more rainbow food. Let me know if you come across any.
