[Sydney] Black Star Pastry is famous for THAT ONE THING – the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, which propelled the bakery café to almost-international fame.

Tastefully gorgeous with a rather girly style, a layered photogenic cake termed ‘instagram-worthy’ all around, with a taste to match.
A slice of the famed Strawberry Watermelon Cake (AUD$7.50) created by Christopher Thé, consists of two layers of almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream, watermelon, strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petal.

Fresh, light and fragrant. That floral sweetness and crunch from the cool watermelon.
Having it was like experiencing ‘happily ever after’ or when you crush invites you for a movie when you were 17.

My main advices: Come early to queue (like I went at 2pm and fortunately bought the 2nd last piece), and eat it within the hour of takeaway. A friend waited too long and remarked “So so.”
We went, “WHAT?!”

On the flipside, people do forget about their other pastries and cakes.
The latest addition, a Raspberry Lychee cake with a rich chocolate biscuit base with layers of raspberry marshmallow and vanilla cream is another good looker.
Plus, raspberries WITH lychees! Hello… that spells “love”.

Also worthy to try are the Orange Cake with Persian Figs and Cream Cheese Icing (AUD$4.50 per piece), and Chocolate Éclair (AUD$6.50). But usually the non-locals get them ONLY after the Strawberry Watermelon Cake is sold out.

There are not only sweet things here.
The Lamb Shank and Red Wine Pie (AUD$7.30) is said to be one of Sydney’s best meat pie – chunky stew-saucy lamb shank fillings in a buttery crusty pastry. Grandma would be happy.
Black Pastry Newtown is about a 5-10 minutes walk from Newtown Station. The surrounding area itself is one of Sydney’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, filled with bohemian vibes, hundreds of restaurants and cafes, and quirky art shops.
For a more convenient location, Black Star has opened within the CBD at Books Kinokuniya The Galeries.
