The Parable of the Prodigal Son tells about the unconditional love and grace of a father.
To see such a word “prodigal”, which means “lavish and extravagant”, on the name of humble café at Ang Mo Kio is indeed uncommon.

Owner Glen Ho of Prodigal Roasters says that the café is definitely inspired by this story. He sees it from another perspective, on how the father has been ‘prodigal’ and generous towards the son.
A reminder that all of us should be grateful of what we have.
He hopes that the team behind Prodigal Roasters can be ‘prodigal’ in their passion for coffee and good food too, and wishes to bring the best they can give to the neighbourhood.

It took me a while to find this hole-in-the-HDB-wall café, about a 15 minute walk from Yio Chu Kang MRT station, somewhat near Thye Hua Kwan Hospital, opposite Ang Mo Kio 628 Market.

Glen used to be with Atlas Coffeehouse. After much experimentation with different coffee beans from East Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and other parts of the world, he decides to strike out on his own.
Every cup of coffee is brewed from beans they roast themselves, and every tart and pastry is baked in-house.
The average price for both their coffee and pastries is $4. Prices are kept slightly lower to make it affordable for the residents and students in the neighbourhood. (Of course I will ask… how to earn enough?)

The best sellers are currently the Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50), Rocky Road Tart ($4.50) and PBMQ ($4.50) – which is a Portobello Mushroom Cheese.

I liked the Miso Cheese Tart. It did look like it was baked in-house without an overly-commercial look.
The base held the fillings firmly, which had a smooth, wobbly texture of medium-light cheese. The top drizzled with a miso caramel sauce, giving a boost of savoury-miso met caramel-sweetness at parts.

Coffee was decent – strong, vibrant, and balanced in body and flavour.
However, due to the limitation of space and the lack of seating places, Prodigal Roasters may not be that space for you to chillax the entire afternoon away.
If you are in the vicinity, be prodigal and show our local startup some support.
