Did a month of January 2017 just fly back like that? February 2017 still proves to be more or less exciting for F&B.
On our list, at least 20 or so cafes, and a whole lot more restaurants opening up within these 2 months. Some brave new openings, despite of news around of uncertain economy.
You would have realised DFD’s monthly cafe list differs slightly from the rest. Part of what we do, as a ‘hobby’ is to walk around Singapore physically, sometimes to the more obscure places to look for hidden finds.
Here’s 14 New Cafes In Singapore February 2017: (If there is a blue link behind the summary, click on it for a more detailed writeup.)

Yu Sheng Poke Bowl, Salted Egg Chicken Waffle, Longan Softserve At Orchard Central
The folks behind FatCat has opened a modern Chinese restaurant Stray By FatCat right at Orchard Central.
I was intrigued with the items on the menu, many not commonly found in other places.
Think Yu Sheng Bowl ($20), Sichuan Black Pepper Wagyu ($22), Truffle Paper Wrap Chicken ($16), deconstructed Mango Sago Pomelo ($20) and Commando’s Favourite ($17) made up of Lychee, Longan and Red Tea Softserve.
Perhaps it may change your impression of Chinese food, that it can be updated and trendy too. Stray By Fatcat (Orchard Cineleisure)

Famous Japanese Soft Cream Buns In Singapore
Japanese soft cream buns Hattendo has arrived in Singapore, with a Hattendo Singapore Café at Tanjong Pagar Centre (right opposite Japan Rail Cafe).
There are five flavours to choose from, from Custard, Fresh Cream, Azuki (sweet red bean paste), Matcha and Chocolate. The most popular flavours are the Custard and Fresh Cream.
Beyond the soft outer layer was tantalising smooth fresh cream. The inside was cold, smooth and mellow, in the right proportion of sweetness and viscosity.
They all go at $2.50 for a piece. I say, get the drink set which is a steal at $5.00 in total with a beverage. Hattendo (Tanjong Pagar)

Dutch Colony Coffee Co. has opened another outlet at UE Square, Clemenceau Avenue. Note: This is at River Valley, do not be confused with United Square.
This is its 3rd branch after PasarBella @ The Grandstand and Frankel Avenue. This has a contemporary, clean look that would appeal to the executives in the area.
The coffee selection includes a rotating selection of single origins – 2 from Ethopia, 1 from Burundi.
If not, an Espresso ($3.50) or Latte ($5.00) made from the signature “Dutch Blends” which has tasting notes of milk chocolate and strawberries (on white) should be a safe choice. Dutch Colony Coffee Co. (UE Square)

Japanese-Italian Café At Esplanade With Waterfront View
Being situated at second level of Esplanade Mall gave Nigiro Café the advantage of a Waterfront view.
Together with natural lighting and sleek furniture, it elevates the style and dining atmosphere to a different level.
Some of their recommended dishes include Cobb Salad ($16), Mentaiko Potato Pizza ($19) and NIGIRO Hamburg Steak ($25).
Go for the Churros Cheese Tart ($4.80). A crumbly tart with overflowing lava cheese when cut open, I enjoyed having the cookie-like texture crust together with the cheesy content. Nigiro Café (Suntec City)

Singapore’s Westgate outlet currently carries 4 flavours – Crunchy Sea Salt with Caramel ($6.90), HK French Toast ($6.90), Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun ($6.90) and Beancurd Dessert ($6.90).
However, do take note that several flavours are ‘sold out’ by noon time when we went down, and we were informed that they “ran out of nitrogen” (???) Lab Made Singapore (Westgate)

Instagrammable Thai Milk Teas At Ang Mo Kio
Soi 55’s Thai Iced Milk Tea has got a level higher, both in terms of aesthetics (can customise now) and taste (further fine-tuned). Making this probably one of the most instagrammable Thai Milk Teas in Singapore.
The signature Cha Yen ($3.30) in a large 22oz cup version, with tea leaves coming from the familiar “Number One Brand”.
Soi’s 55 version has probably been modified to suit the local taste, and therefore not as sweet.

French Entremet Patisserie Shop Opens At Yio Chu Kang
Despite being relatively new, Salt and Delight may be familiar to pastry lovers, as owner / patisserie chef Gwen has been serving her range of Entremet cakes online since 2015.
Entremet is a multi-layered mousse-based cake with various complimentary flavors and varying textural contrasts.
Ah, yes. The interesting blend of cake flavors, was what first caught my attention from this little unpretentious cake store.
The most oriental-sounding Matcha Mandarin Orange ($7.50 for slice) ended up as my favorite pick.
Despite its peculiar combination, it had a complimentary blend of matcha bitterness with citrusy sweet orange fragrance. Salt And Delight (Yio Chu Kang)

Mellower Coffee Singapore
108 Middle Road, The Prospex #01-01 Singapore 188967
Candy Floss Over Coffee
Mellower Coffee is a coffee house from Shanghai which specialises in specialty coffee from various places around the world.
This outlet near Bugis is its 2nd in Singapore after the outlet at 77 Robinson Road.
One of its highlight is the Sweet Little Rain ($9.80), where you get a ball of cotton candy suspended over a cup of Americano. The heat from the coffee supposedly will melt the candy and drip back into the cup. Supposedly. Surely an Instagram hit, for the time being.
