Revolution Coffee – $4.90 Nasi Lemak And Kueh Dadar Mille Crepe In A Hipster Café

I look forward to the days when more hipster café are serving their own rendition of local food. Not just instagrammable, but tasty ones.

You find a lot of that in Bangkok, while Tom Yum, Green Curry and Cha-Yen are creativity incorporated within mains and even desserts in cafes and bistros.

Therefore even though Revolution Coffee at 21 Media Circle is quite out of the way, causing my friend to literally drive in circles, I wanted to make my way there. Also to show some support.

Remember Wok & Barrel at Duxton? Local consultant-chef Shen Tan is behind many of the dishes at Revolution Coffee.

The former director at Forbes gave up her a more ‘gleaming’ (depends on how you see it) career to go into the kitchen.

Typically spotting a short crop with a loose black tee, the self-taught chef whips up dishes which will make any mother proud.

I was surprised at its price point as well. I mean, don’t compare to food centres or nasi lemak chains where rental are lower or where they can reap economies of scale.

A plate of Crispy Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak at Revolution Coffee is priced at a friendly $4.90.

Options with Crispy Pork, 5 Spiced Pork Confit, Beef Rendang or Chicken Rendang are still at a wallet-friendly $7.90 to $9.90.

The fragrant rice is painstakingly cooked by twice steaming over a three-hour period, ensuring a fluffy texture and a lemak taste which is not too heavy.

Compared to the hawker centre ones which are generally oily and richer in taste, I like how delicate this is, complete with light aroma.

This is complimented with its unique brands of both home-made sambal belachan and sweet nasi lemak chilli. That is two chills for the price of one.

The one other thing you shouldn’t miss is the Kueh Dadar Mille Crepe which should make its round around Instagram soon.

A Kueh Dadar Mille Crepe, merging cakes of two different cultures today.

Layers of pandan crepe, grated coconut, whipped coconut cream and salted gula melaka, is like having the best of both worlds.

The coconut shavings which absorbed drips of gula Melaka was the best part. Wished the crepe texture could be fluffier though.

Coffee is from the Caffeine Dispensary, a roastery based in Jakarta.

If you are up for other more locally inspired stuff, look out for the Bak Chor Mee Pasta ($19.90), Buah Keluak Pasta ($19.90) and Pulot Hitam Pudding with Gula Melaka Butterscotch served with Coconut Ice Cream ($10.00).
