Havelock II Mall is where you can find this coffee studio. Havelock where?
The building of walking distance from both Clarke Quay and Chinatown MRT stations may be quite unoccupied for now, but there are a few food and coffee places you can find here, including Slayer Coffee, BUNDT by The Backyard Bakers, Daejon House and Wong Kok Char Chan Teng.
Slayer Coffee is started by Campus Superstar Alumni Renfred Ng and business partner Abbie Tok, considered a young, good looking pair of baristas and entrepreneurs. (OMG, I remember watching him as a young boy on TV, making me feel so OLD now.)
I think their experience the last few years in providing specialty mobile coffee services for corporate events and wedding receptions helps, as this new café seems more polished than the usual start-ups.
More attention paid to details as well.
This Slayer Coffee Café X Studio focuses in creating pastries and desserts with natural ingredients to best pair with coffee.
Good to know that there are no syrup, no colorings used in their drinks as well.
The highlight dessert was Matcha Infusion Cheesecake ($7) with a dual soft top layer, and smooth matcha lower tier.
Abbie who also baked these goodies mentioned that no whipping cream used but only cream cheese and mascarpone cheese to keep the taste “pure”.
I liked the texture that was not overly dense, but wondered how the matcha could surface more obviously as the tea notes were buried under the strong cheese.
My favourite dessert from Slayer was surprising the 70% Dark Cacao Brownie ($11 with filter coffee), different from the usual rectangular block-shaped ones.
Looking like a fat cookie, this had an enjoyable thin crusty exterior, with moist almost-molten inside. Slightly rich and chocolately. Best to go with unsweetened coffee.
In terms of drinks, a surprise find was the Roasted Sweet Potato Latte ($5 for hot, $6 for cold).
The purple coloured drink was made with REAL sweet potato, refreshing and smooth, not too heavy considered it was a ‘carb’ drink.
The big challenge for Slayer Coffee Café is that it is located on Level 2 of an almost unheard mall, so foot traffic would be low. If you are in the vicinity, show some love over there.
