Mo-ii – Minimalist Cafe With Refreshing Pitaya And Acai Bowls, At GSH Plaza Raffles Place

“Mo-ii” means “can do” in Japanese, which probably describes the heart of the owners when they opened this minimalist café in the heart of CBD.

Mo-ii café is located within the new (revamped) GSH Plaza, which sees itself being surrounded by shops such as The Salad Corner, Chomp Kitchen and Bar, Workspace Espresso, JEWEL Coffee and Tossz Salads.

The shop space is small though, and can probably sit about 10 or so comfortably. Still, there are many corners which are instagrammable spots for those ‘got-feel’ café shots.

Its premise is to serve nutritious, tasty and “so-good looking” all day meals. Now, that sounds familiar.
Most of the food items are made in house, with the aim to keep their offerings free from preservatives and refined sugars.

Perhaps it is still in the soft launch phase and the team has yet to understand fully preferences of the Raffles Place crowd, I found the menu to be neither-here-nor-there, with the naming rather peculiar.

Offerings include Main Street ($14.50) – a grilled ribeye on quinoa salad with basil aioli; Pacific Rim ($13.50) – salmon on quinoa salad with basil aioli; The Usual Suspects of ($6.50) of mashed avocado, tahini, microgreens; and Mo-ii Powerhouse ($6.90, $8.90, $10.90) which is an acai bowl.

I don’t think CBD diners would mind the names to be more straight-forward, for example, Mo-ii Acai Bowl.

After some deliberation, I had a Tomatoes Can’t Wait ($6.50), with spread of mashed avocadoes, cherry tomatoes, basil and feta cheese on rye-sourdough bread supplied by Maison Kayser.

It was a healthy, colourful piece of bread, and one could see the kitchen’s heart and dedication when every piece on there was neatly arranged.

I had both the Summer Dream ($8.90) and Mo-ii Powerhouse ($8.90), ie acai and pitaya bowls on separate occasions, and found that they were fresher, more refreshing, had more balanced taste and texture compared to some other brands.

Was particularly impressed with the Pitaya Bowl, still seldom seen in Singapore, with dragonfruit as the based topped with mangoes, jackfruit, strawberries handmade granola, and chia seeds

The granola was prepared by the owner, and landed agreeable crunch and sweetness to the bowl.

I find that Mo-ii has its own quiet charm and appeal, but unfortunately found itself sandwiched between powerhouses salad shops, and would need to carve out its own identity and niche.
