Seoi Gor Café 水哥冰室 – Team Behind Gong Cha Opens Hong Kong Café At Holland Drive

It was strange to find a Hong Kong café Seoi Gor Cafe 水哥冰室 in the middle of 45 Holland Drive, and its red green signage resembling those in the streets of Mongkok just popped out. Like it was not supposed to belong there.

Located a block away from Holland Drive Market and Food Centre, the other more popular shop in the vicinity is Lean Bento.

Interestingly, Seoi Gor Cafe 水哥冰室 is operated by the Royal T Group, the team behind Gong Cha in Singapore.

I liked its interior, with that signature green HK café colour, retro floor tiles, graphic wallpaper (though low res) and music that played Jacky Cheung’s Canto hits.

Got feel.

An important selling point for any Hong Kong café is its range of items. I always joke that you can find anything under the sky at a Hong Kong café.

Not this though. The variety at Seoi Gor Café seemed unexpectedly limited.

33 food and drink items in total. I counted.

The menu was divided in Rice dishes ($5.90), Noodles ($4.80), Sticks ($1.80), Toast ($2.80 – $4.50), and drinks ($1.90 – $3.90).

There were only 2 rice dishes – Steamed Mushroom Chicken and Fermented Bean Pork rice, and 3 noodle dishes – Soup, Dry Instant Noodles or Macaroni Soup.

I ordered the Scrambled Eggs, Ham & Thick Toast ($4.50), which didn’t score highly in terms of presentation, especially for the misery slices of ham on top.

However, its aesthetics didn’t do its taste justice – the toast was surprisingly buttery fluffy, and scrambled eggs creamy enough.

Craving for the Hong Kong style curry fishballs, I ordered sticks of Fishball, Fried Tau Kee and Mushroom Pork Ball (3 for $5.00).

They were decent, though nothing to shout about. Perhaps these sticks could have absorbed of the sauces for them to be flavoursome through and through.

Seoi Gor Cafe 水哥冰室 could do with some marketing (sorry guys) and expansion of its menu. Its interior and food was not that bad, and I think diners in the vicinity won’t mind another breakfast and supper place.
