Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant
31 Purvis Street Singapore 188608 (in between City Hall and Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 6:00pm (Mon – Thu), 8:00am – 9:00pm (Fri & Sat), 8:00am – 6:00pm (Sun)
Last Orders 30mins before closing
Reserve by Chope: Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant

Classic New York brunch at Purvis Street
If New York pancakes are your thing. Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant is a famed American breakfast institution hailing from Lower East Side New York, known for its Blueberry Pancakes ($19.00), Chicken and Waffles ($21), Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich ($17.00) and Farmer’s Plates ($22.00) of soft scrambled eggs, farmhouse cheddar, house rosemary pork patties, herb-roasted tomatoes with sourdough toast.

Brunch recommendation: Pancakes with Warm Maple Butter
I am usually torn between the Pancakes and Chicken and Waffles, because #caloriewatch. If you usually have a sweet tooth, I would recommend the Pancakes with Warm Maple Butter ($19.00), which have been voted twice as the best in the city by New York Magazine. These pancakes come with a choice of blueberries, banana walnut or chocolate chunks.

Something to know: The warm maple butter is made with just 2 quality ingredients – 100% pure organic Grade ‘A’ dark maple syrup directly imported from a North American farm and unsalted butter made from 100% fresh cream from free-range cows.

Drizzle it over, and enjoy the fluffiness and bliss.

Populus
146 Neil Road, Singapore 088875 (Outram Park and Tanjong Pagar MRT Station)
Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Mon), 9am – 4pm (Tues), 9am – 1030pm (Wed), 9am – 1030pm (Thurs), 9am – 1030pm (Fri), 9:30am – 10:30pm (Sat), 9:30am – 7pm (Sun)
Reserve by Chope: Populus

Rave-worthy gastro-cafe on Neil Road
Stylish doesn’t even begin to describe this elegant café. The interior design, the expensive coffee equipment, the attention to details, the well-groomed serving-staff (serious) all in neatly-ironed slightly tight white long sleeved shirts… “Even the napkins are the expensive kind.”

If you are not sure what to order, Populus popular (that’s a mouthful) items include Populus Scramble ($18.50) of soft creamy scrambled eggs, fresh herb melange, streaked bacon on a toasted croissant; Spring Pancake & Fried Chicken ($21.00); and Seafood Linguine with Boston Lobster Tail ($34.00).

Brunch recommendation: Buckwheat Pancakes
Get the Buckwheat Pancakes ($19.50), served with berry fruit compote, passion fruit curd, cornflake crumb, and thyme infused maple syrup, comes with a soft and fluffy texture.

These pancakes are further decorated with flowers, and are really pretty for Instagram.

Fabulous Baker Boy
The Foothills, 70 River Valley Rd #01-15, Singapore 179037 (Clarke Quay MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Tues – Thurs), 11am – 11pm (Fri – Sat), 10am – 5pm (Sun)
Reserve by Chope: Fabulous Baker Boy

Bakery and cafe near Fort Canning Park. A great green spot.
Actually, not many people know where The Fabulous Baker Boy is hidden. (I used to swim there so I know). The area was once occupied by the old River Valley Swimming Pool, across both Clarke Quay and Liang Court.

That’s the charm though, as the café is set in the midst of green foliage below a hill, giving the impression that you are away from the city.

Brunch recommendation: Fried Chicken And Waffles
The café features wholesome and hearty fare such as Kampung Chicken Pot Pie ($17.00), Duck Confit ($22), Chilli Crab Mac & Cheese ($18.00), Grilled Sandwiches ($11.00 – $14.50) and Fresh Salads.

The Fried Chicken And Waffles ($22.00) contains buttermilk chicken served on a whole waffle, drizzled with syrup and a side of Chinese pear and purple cabbage slaw.

Before I forget, DO NOT miss out the cakes while you are here. That is what TFBB is known for.

Symmetry
9 Jalan Kubor #01-01, Singapore 199206 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 9pm (Mon), 10.30am – 11pm (Tue – Thurs), 10.30am – 12am (Fri), 9am – 12am (Sat), 9am – 7pm (Sun)
Reserve by Chope: Symmetry

French-inspired fare along Jalan Kubor
Nestled in the serene spot along Jalan Kubor, Symmetry is a restaurant-bar that pays homage to the idea of food-sharing.

Taking inspiration from both the Australian dining culture and French cuisine, Symmetry wants to emphasise the dining experience of sharing. So do remember to come in a group.

Brunch recommendation: Eggs Sur Le Plat
Other than the Symmetry Big Breakfast, Portobello & Burrata, Merguez Shakshouka, Asparagus & Crab Salad and Symmetry Eggs Benedict, one of the best-sellers here is the Eggs Sur Le Plat.

This Eggs Sur Le Plat is a baked eggs dish, with a mix of eggs, chorizo, and cheese, served with toasted bread cube for you to sweep up the tomato-based stew. Comforting and hearty.

Xiao Ya Tou
6 Duxton Hill #01-01, Singapore 089592 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 10.30am to 11pm (Mon – Thurs), 10:30am – 12am (Fri), 10am – 12am (Sat), 10am – 5pm (Sun)
Reserve by Chope: Xiao Ya Tou

Quirky Asian brunch on Duxton Hill
Many may not know that the quirky Xiao Ya Tou serves up weekend brunch. It is really quite a fun place, that serves up modern Asian and zhi char fare, all in a playful and nostalgic setting. (Look out for all the retro toys and posters.)

If you are looking at something Hong Kong-ish-Japanese-local for brunch, then I think this is a right place.

Brunch recommendation: Unagi Benedict
Signature brunch items at Xiao Ya Tou include Unagi Benedict ($23), XYT Chai Tow Kway ($18), Small Shrimp Fry Onion Biscuit ($19), and Mantou French Toast Ice Cream Sandwich ($7).

I was really there for the Unagi Eggs Ben. The Unagi Benedict exemplifies the mix of several cultures, with sous vide eggs in a deep fried mantou bun, topped with Yuzukosho hollandaise sauce, and the star ingredient – Japanese-style grilled teriyaki eel. Cut it up, watch the yolk ooze, then mix it all up.

Atlas Coffeehouse
6 Duke’s Road, Singapore 268886 (Botanic Gardens MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 7pm (Tue – Sun), Closed on Mon
Reserve by Chope: Atlas Coffeehouse

Third wave coffee and hearty nosh at Bukit Timah
This is a really popular brunch spot, so much so that my friends far away from Bukit Timah will purposely travel all the way there. Atlas Coffeehouse is helmed by the team behind Assembly Coffee, and the name is the acronym for At-Land-Air-Sea. The interior reflects part of the theme.

At las(t), not the usual repetitive brunch fares seen in the usual cafes. Presentation is straight-forward and it is evident that they’re steering away from just being ‘Instagram-worthy’.

Loads of interesting brunch items, from Salmon Soba Noodles ($18), Creamy Mushrooms on Sourdough ($14.00) and an ATLAS Superbowl ($18.00) filled with roasted quinoa, umami miso eggplant, crispy kale, shimeiji mushrooms, marinated cherry tomatoes, torched butter corn, and roasted rosemary chicken.

Brunch recommendation: ATLAS Butterscotch Banana Pancake ($18.50)
The ATLAS Butterscotch Banana Pancake is probably a combination of many favourite things – fluffy pancakes, creamy ice cream, maple glazed cornflakes, butterscotch and caramelised bananas.

Texture and taste wise, reminded me of a light and moist banana cake.

CreatureS
120 Desker Road Singapore 209 639 (Farrer Park MRT Station)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10:30pm (Tues – Thurs, Sun), 12pm – 11:30pm (Fri, Sat), Closed Mon
Reserve by Chope: CreatureS

Comfort food with an Asian flair on Desker Road
CreatureS is a modern-day restaurant set, with lush green interior that’s done up tastefully and feels like a stately Peranakan home. My friend quipped, “Super chio”.

The menu is inspired by the heirlooms of traditional Asian and Peranakan cuisines, married with a modern take on presentation.

Brunch recommendation: Crayfish Hokkien Mee
There are some items of the menu that pops out, such as Beauty & The Beast ($30) – a turmeric–galangal curry with elegant flower crab (that’s the beauty) and hunky mud crabmeat chunks (and this is the beast). Served with rice vermicelli and cucumber ribbons.

I had one of the most indulgent Hokkien Mee ($3) ever, with ingredients of fresh crayfish, tiger prawns and squid, topped with crispy pork lard, and Japanese fish roe. I liked the base, fried with rich prawn broth, and the home-made sambal belachan made the noodles a lot tastier. (Note: This Hokkien Mee is only available only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & public holidays.)

The Refinery
115 King George’s Ave #01-02 Singapore 208561 (Lavender MRT Station)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Tue – Thurs), 12pm – 1am (Fri), 11am – 1am (Sat), 11am – 4pm (Sun), Closed on Mon
Reserve by Chope: The Refinery

Trendy bar, grill and workspace at Jalan Besar
Set in the Jalan Besar district, The Refinery is a hip multi-storey concept which houses an industrial chic cafe by day, and turns into a trendy beer drinking modern yakitori joint by night.

Fun fact: You can also sign up for craft workshops over the weekends to learn new skills and have brunch all at the same venue.

Brunch recommendation: Salted Egg Yolk Onion Rings ($13)
Other than Double Confirm Shiok Burger ($20), The Epic Beef Gyudon with Foie Gras ($25) and Refinery Waffles ($14) which are the top favourites, almost every other table seemed to be having the Salted Egg Yolk Onion Rings ($13).

These are large, crisp, thin onion rings drizzled with grainy salted egg yolk sauce. Singapore’s obsession with salted-egg-anything doesn’t end.

Wild Honey
Scotts Square #03-01, 6 Scotts Road, Singapore 228209 (Orchard MRT Station)
Opening hours: 9am – 8:30pm Last Order (Sun – Thurs), 9am – 9:30pm Last Order (Fri, Sat, Eve PH)
Reserve by Chope: Wild Honey

Scrumptious all-day breakfast at Orchard
Wild Honey must be one of the cafes that started the eggs-brunch trend in Singapore. The mother of all brunch cafes, perhaps?

Its strength is in its large range of savoury and sweet all-day breakfast dishes, includes a strong lineup of inspired vegetarian dishes.

Brunch recommendation: Spanish, Tunisian, Brittany
Eggs, eggs, eggs. Other than The Spanish with diced chorizo, house corned beef & potato, poached eggs & Hollandaise sauce with signature brioche; the other most popular favourite is the Tunisian which is a spicy shakshouka dish.

New items of interest: Wild Honey at Scotts Square has just introduced a Smoked Fish and Bagel Towers, and an Afternoon Tea special ($16.00++ per person) from 3pm – 6pm daily. Its time to feel like a tai-tai.

Group Therapy
49 Duxton Road #02-01 S089513. (Tanjong Pagar MRT Station
Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm (Tue – Sun), Closed Mon
Reserve by Chope: Group Therapy

Charming coffeehouse and brunchery at Duxton
Group Therapy started in 2010 as an event space in Duxton Road, and has grown into a day café. I like to sit near the window here when I need some quiet time for reading and reflection.

Good to know: almost every item on the brunch menu is made from scratch. The Sesame Bagel & Scrambled Eggs ($16), Brûlée French Toast ($17), Skinny Eggs Ben ($17) and Pumpkin Pancake ($19) remain as some of the favourites.

Brunch recommendation: Smoked Salmon Rosti
Something different from the usual – smoked salmon with grilled potato rosti, topped with cream cheese, accompanied with a half avocado and poached egg.
