Brewtown Newtown – Cafe In A Warehouse In Sydney, Known For Sparkling Coffee, Cruffin and Brewnut

[Sydney] The one thing we remember about Brewtown Newtown was its FREE sparkling water on tap, also used in the Cold Brew Coffee (AUD$6) which I fell head over heels for – so totally refreshing yet bitter.

Brewtown Newtown calls itself a “cafe, coffee roastery, and artisan bakery”.

Pioneered by two men with serious solid café credentials, Charles Cameron previously managed Single Origin Roasters and Toby’s Estate Woolloomooloo, while Simon Triggs was manager for Toby’s Estate and owns Gnome Espresso at Surry Hills.

The building where it is located at is already worth a mention, converted from a beautiful old warehouse that dates back to 1911.

Tall ceilings, exposed beams, dazzling natural wood benches plus eclectic décor make it a charming, trendy place.

Brewtown Newtown was constantly packed, probably full by 11 in the morning. The cafe-restaurant was very busy, but my table was ready within a 10 minutes wait or so.

Coffee is roasted in-house, so that the team can take more ownership and develop into a coffee wholesaler.

Other than excellent coffee, Newtown’s food is one of the reasons you should love this place.

It boasts of rich diversity in its foods that come from an area with such a melting pot of rich cultures — Asian, European, Australian. Plus the usage of fresh, local ingredient in bistro-style dishes.

Popular foods range from simple (to mind-boggling) Scrambled Eggs on Toast (AUD$12) Coffee Rub Brisket, Mushrooms & Caramelised Onion on Toast with Poached Eggs (AUD$18), Slow Roast Lamb Shoulder (AUD$25), Soft Shell Crab Burger with Squid Ink Bun (AUD$8), to Hazelnut & Callebaut Chocolate Brioche French Toast with Orange Ricotta & Fruits (AUD$16).

My personal highlight was the Coffee Rub Brisket, Mushrooms & Caramelised Onion on Toast with Eggplant Puree, Horseradish Goats Cheese, Beetroot and Poached Eggs (AUD$18) – like they got all the proteins and combinations that worked in one single plate.

The tender flavourful brisket was cooked for 12 hours, rubbed with freshly ground coffee, and roasted in house.

Featuring one of the most talked about food items on Instagram (some 1-2 years back) was the Cruffin – that is croissant crossed with a muffin, Newtown’s iconic fixture.

I saw a Lemon Meringue (AUD$6), Matcha Belly Jam (AUD$6), Milo (AUD$6) and Turkish Delight (AUD$6), and possibly bought them all in hurried-excitement.

Wishing that they were more flaky and delightful, each sent me on a sugar high after a bite or two.

Also look out for the Brewnut – their version of the cronut; and B.K.A Brewtown’s Kuoign Amman, added with salted caramel sauce to make it all more seductive.

So yes, Brewtown Newtown features complimentary freely available sparkling water, and a boutique-cum-recording shop on the upstairs, making it quite a hipster place to hang out.
