Many cafes are opening up in the CBD, with Downtown Gallery, GSH Plaza new in the mix, and One Raffles Place and Raffles Xchange getting new tenants.

Headlining foreign brands anticipated to open in July include Pablo Cheese Tarts and Omotesando Koffee. We shall wait to find out if standards remain the same, or at least similar.

Fusion Rice Bowls and Cold Brew At Downtown Gallery, By Atlas Coffeehouse
Conceptualised by the team behind Assembly Coffee (now closed) and Atlas Coffeehouse, Lunar Coffee Brewers is their latest venture into CBD at Downtown Gallery.

The café aims to bring comfort food with a touch of their minimal style to the office crowd in the vicinity.

The mains are focused on fusion rice bowls. One can expect signature bowls like Braised Pork Belly Don ($14.50), Miso Nori Salmon Don ($14.50) and Gochujang Chicken Don ($14.50).

Other brunch food and munchies you can expect include Everyday Shakshuka ($13.50), Miso-Nori Salmon Soba ($14.50), Truffle Fries ($8.00), Chilli Beef & Nacho ($12.00) and Tater Tots ($7.50) served with spiced herb dips.

Quiet, cool place to hang out during the weekend Saturdays. Madness during weekday lunch. Lunar Coffee Brewers (Downtown Gallery)

Opening Hours: 7:30am – 7:00pm (Mon – Fri), 7:30am – 4:00pm (Sat), Closed Sun

French pastries and baked goods
Patisserie G from Millenia Walk has opened another branch at Downtown Gallery, offering its signatures such as The G Spot ($9.00) – a dark chocolate mousse, chocolate meringue cake; Lychee Rose Cheesecake ($8.50); Bombe Cerise ($9.50); and Sake Kasu Cheese Cake ($8.00).

If you are looking for the ‘Pokemon Ball’, the cafe sells it in a form of the PG Dome ($9.00), a cake of yuzu mousse, raspberry balsamic compote, and almond sponge.

Burgers exclusive to this branch include Salted Egg Yolk Fish Burger, Spicy Buah Keluak Pork Burger and Miso Pulled Pork Burger.

Providore
6A Shenton Way Downtown Gallery, Singapore 068815

(Opening: 17th July)

New flagship outlet at Downtown Gallery
Providore has closed its flagship at The Grandstand Bukit Timah, and will be launching a new concept at Downtown Gallery.

It will showcase new concepts such as a juice bar and fresh produce section, a live coffee roasting station, a walk-in cheese room, as well as a dedicated cooking studio and events space.

The café has a seating capacity of 100 seats, which will serve up brunch and Western fare such as Lobster Mac & Cheese, Grass-fed Beef Burger and Crab Linguine.

To cater to the busy executives, a takeaway “Fresh and Go” concept will feature salads, fresh sandwiches, soups, cold-pressed juices and smoothies.

Japanese Inspired Cake Shop Kki Makes A Return
On that note, fans who are sad that Japanese pastry shop Kki which closed its outlet at SOTA, will be glad to know they are returning.

However, the Kki cakes will be sold within the Providore store, and without its own branding.

My personal favourite cakes are the Kinabaru – layered with flavours of light coconut mousse, bright yellow passion fruit crème and a soft chocolate base; and Antoinette which was named after one of the co-owners, lady-like in its heart-shape, elegantly created with fluffy white chocolate sponge and mango fillings.

Hope these make a comeback too.

Coffee Break – Raffles Place
GSH Plaza, 20 Cecil Street #02-09 Singapore 049705
Opening hours: 7:30am – 6:00pm

Flavoured Kopi & Teh, Matcha Coconut Toast At GSH Plaza, Raffles Place
Coffee Break, which is located at Amoy Food Centre and Science Park, has expanded with its 3rd outlet at GSH Plaza – a short walk away from Raffles Place MRT station.

Many customers come for their flavoured kopi, from Almond, Almond Ginger, Black Sesame, Ginger, Taro Milk, Mint, Melon Milk, Masala and Mango Milk ($3.80 for hot or iced versions).

One of their best sellers is the Sea Salt Caramel Latte ($4.80 for hot or iced version), which I agree can be interesting to drink with slight sweet and salty notes along with the coffee-bitterness. Coffee Break (GSH Plaza)

Hantol Korean Restaurant
GSH Plaza #01-03, 20 Cecil Street Singapore 049705 (Raffles Place MRT)
Tel: +65 6532 2771
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 9:00pm (Mon – Fri), 9:00am – 7:00pm (Sat), 11:30am – 7:00pm (Sun, PH)

Korean Toast, Dosirak and Kimbap Café At Raffles Place
It felt strange to find a no-frills, family-style Korean café in the heart of the CBD at GSH Plaza.

Offering include home-made lunch box sets of Dosirak ($12.90 – $18.90), Bibimbap ($10.90 – $12.90), Kimbap ($6 for half roll), Riceball ($3), Ramyeon ($10.90), Jjajangmyeon ($12.90) and Kimchi Fried Rice ($11.90).

I was initially there for the Korean Street Toast ($4) filled with egg, ham and cheese. The orange-striped packaging brought back some memories.

But it was no Isaac Toast. It tasted probably like what ajoomma would pack for her children before they head to school. Hantol Korean Restaurant (GSH Plaza)

HYGGE
37 Haji Lane, Singapore 189230
Tel: +65 8588 7869
Opening Hours: 10:00am – 7:00pm (Mon – Sat), Closed Sun
https://www.facebook.com/hyggecafesg/

Cosy Floral Themed Café at Haji Lane, with Matcha and Thai Milk Tea Cake
Previously occupied by Shop Wonderland Café (which has moved to Telok Ayer), the two-story store inherited the same floral theme from the former.

Due to the limited space for heavy cooking, Hygge serves only simple mains like Mushroom Aglio Olio ($12), Beef Lagsana ($14), Chicken Ham Sandwich ($10) and Granola & Greek Yogurt ($12) which could serve as a light meal.

I reckoned their cakes would be their best-selling item from the almost sold-out cake display, with flavors which would usually appeal to cake lovers such as Thai Milk tea, Matcha and Earl Grey Lavender. Hygge (Haji Lane)

PABLO Cheese Tart Singapore
Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, 435 Orchard Road #01-02/38, Singapore 238877 (Orchard MRT)

(Opening Soon – Late July)

Famous PABLO Cheese Tart from Osaka
Pablo is branded as “The most famous cheese tarts from Japan”. The popular cheese tart, like a piece of art, derived its name from artist Pablo Picasso.

The location will be at down-town Orchard. They will be taking over the space left vacant by Omakase Burger at Wisma Atria, which has moved to Picnic Food Park upstairs.

The tarts come in different flavours such as the original cheese, matcha, chocolate and, for strawberry for the mini tarts.

Singaporeans should like the Matcha Cheese Tart – encased within the golden, flaky crust and filled to the brim is the matcha filling that eluded a fragrant tea aroma.

KARA Café & Dessert Bar
617 Bukit Timah Rd, S269718 (Tan Kah Kee MRT, Downtown Line)
Tel: +65 6468 8940
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 10:30 pm (Mon – Sun)

Froyo shop diversifies to dessert bar
From the people behind Sogurt, KARA Café & Dessert Bar is influenced by the owner’s experience in Los Angeles during her college years (where Sogurt was initially inspired).

The current menu is an eclectic mix of the many ethnic diversities found in the city, such as Japanese, Korean, Thai, Mexican and healthy LA food (kale and quinoa).

Signature brunch items include Pork Belly Miso Bowl ($16), Smoked Bacon Blues Toastie ($15), Okonomiyaki Truffle Tots ($12), Coco Cashew Pomelo Bowl ($12) and P.B. Skillet Cookie with Softie Swirl ($15).

For fans of their froyo, do not worry as they are still available. New favourites now include Maple Lavender and Salted Speculoos for ice-cream, and Strawberry Thyme, Lychee Rose, and Passionfruit Mint for froyo.

Nuevo Café
115 Eunos Avenue 3 #01-01 Singapore 409839
Tel: +65 9632 6045
Opening Hours: 8:00 am – 10:00pm (Mon – Sun)

Hidden Café Spot At Eunos Avenue
I only found out about Nuevo Café because it is below my gym. LOL. It is an offshoot from a commercial kitchen equipment supplying company.

The heart of their menu consists of the usual café fare (eggs benedict / fish & chips) but with a Japanese twist. For instance, the use of mirin to make hollandaise sauce, the finishing of the Mac and Cheese with Japanese panko.

Available café offering include France-imported Croissants and Muffins ($2.50 – $3.00), Yakiniku Beef Striploin or Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowls ($8.50), Chicken Mayo with Truffle Croissant ($4.50). Quite affordable pricing.
