There seems to be quite a number of Japanese restaurants opening up in Singapore, from Japan’s No 1 Soba Restaurant Nadai Fujisoba Ni-Hachi, Misato at The Centrepoint, Ippudo Ramen at Tanjong Pagar, Kaneta Shoten at Chinatown Point, and Katsudon Hanakatsu (which DFD will feature soon).

Chinese Speakeasy Restaurant With A Secret Entrance
This is probably the first speakeasy Chinese restaurant-bar in Singapore.
Make your way to Lokkee at Plaza Singapura Level 3, tell the service staff you want to visit “The Dragon Chamber”, and you will be led through a not-so-hidden big Chinese style red door.
Get the *secret menu* and pull it up.
You would find a couple of ‘safe’ choices – Curry Fries ($10), Fried Pork Belly Chips ($16), Mala Irsh Duck ($36 for half, $60 for whole), Lobster Crispy Noodles ($25 for regular, $48 for large), and Giant River Prawns and Spicy Butter Cream Sauce ($32).
I saw more ‘exotic’ uncommon dishes of Josper Grilled Pig’s Tail ($26), Rural-style Fried Frog’s Legs ($18) and Sichuan Boiled Brisket with Pig’s Skin Noodles ($26). The Dragon Chamber (Plaza Singapura)

Promising Restaurant With Dishes That Excite, By Chef Ivan Brehm
There is certain expectation that come with the opening of Nouri restaurant at 72 Amoy Street. It is after all opened by Chef-Owner Ivan Brehm, who led The Kitchen At Bacchanalia to a Michelin Star.
For lunch, you get a 5 course Omakase menu ($85++) or Teishoku style a la carte menu. Unfortunately, the Omakase menu is not available on Mondays.
2 tasting menus are showcased for dinner, priced at $140 for 5 courses and $170 for 7 courses.
Food at Nouri is described as “Crossroads cooking”, where it takes influence from around the globe, but showcases the similarities and connections shared across cultures. Nouri Restaurant (Amoy Street)
Amò
33 Hong Kong Street Singapore 059672 (Clarke Quay MRT Station)
Tel: +65 67237733
Opening Hours: 12:00pm – 2:30pm, 6:00pm – 11:00pm (Mon – Fri), 6:00pm – 11:00pm (Sat)
This Italian Restaurant At Hong Kong Street Should Be The Next Dining Hotspot
Amò is the latest Italian restaurant by Beppe De Vito and the IlLido Group – the same group behind &Sons, Aura, Braci, Osteria Art, Southbridge and ilLido at the Cliff.
Amò’s menu focuses on classic pizzas and large sharing plates, meant to be shared with friends and family – just as the Italians do. Its signature dish is a Spaghettoni with Boston Lobster and Tarragon ($78, serves two).
Other recommended dishes included the Heirloom Tomato and Radish Salad with White Balsamic ($12.00), Margherita DOP Buffalo Mozzarella, San Marzano Tomato, Basil ($26.00), Burrata with Eggplant Salad, Walnuts and Bottarga ($24.00), Hand Cut Fries with Rosemary and Mushroom Ketchup ($12.00) and Caramel Banana Tiramisú ($18.00).
There was a weekday 3-course set-lunch with coffee or tea at a more reasonably priced $28. Amò (Hong Kong Street)

Tel: +65 6221 3988
Opening Hours: 12:00pm – 11:30pm (Mon – Sat), Closed Sun
Japanese-Italian Pizza, Pasta and Wagyu Bar At Tanjong Pagar
Luka calls itself a “contemporary Italian, Pizza and Wagyu Bar” in Singapore, with Japanese influences.
You would notice a ‘power’ Stefano Ferrara Neapolitan handmade brick oven in the open-concept kitchen.
LuKa’s signature dishes include appetizer Luka Housemade Wagyu Bresaola ($12), side dish 62-Degree Egg with Wagyu & Uni ($10), Plin Agnolotti ravioli ($18), and Prosciutto e Rucola Burrata pizza ($23), complete with stylish pizza boxes for takeaway. Luka (Tanjong Pagar)
Nadai Fujisoba Ni-Hachi
100AM Mall #03-14, 100 Tras Street Singapore 079027

Opening Hours: 11:00am – 3:00pm, 5:30pm – 10:00pm (Mon – Sun)
Japan’s No 1 Soba Restaurant Opens In Singapore
Nadai Fujisoba Ni-Hachi, Japan’s number one soba restaurant, has quietly opened in Singapore at 100AM Mall Tanjong Pagar.
The soba specialist 蕎麦屋 was first established in 1966 at Shibuya Tokyo, and currently has 125 outlets around Asia. This is its 1st branch in Singapore.
Fujisoba’s menu offers an extensive variety of soba, soba, soba, including Dry Maze Soba ($14 – $16), Curry Nanban Soba ($16 – $24), Hot Tempura Soba ($18 – $20), Hot Tanuki Soba ($11), Cold Soba ($11 – $20), donburis and ala carte dishes.
I would recommend the Deep-Fried Soba with Sizzling Seafood Spicy Sauce ($18.50++), which reminded me of a zhi-char dish of ’shen mian’.
Misato
176 Orchard Road #01-33E The Centrepoint (Gastro+) Singapore 238843 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6235 2822
Opening Hours: 12:00pm – 10:00pm (Mon – Sun)
Impossibly Wobbly Matcha Pudding, Worthy Cha Soba And Okonomiyaki
Misato is located at the revamped Gastro+ at The Centrepoint (right next to Honolulu), where you would need to walk towards the back of the mall on Level 1. It is considered ‘hidden’, but worth a find.
The Cha Soba ($13.80) is one of my favourites among the savouries, served beautifully in a bento box in fours twirls of refreshingly oishii Matcha soba with a good bite.
As for the Okonomiyaki ($14.90), there was an interactive moment when the chef would turn up to cut the savoury pancake in front of you.
Made with high-quality Japanese yam with crunchy Japanese cabbage in its fillings. Yes, even the cabbage used is imported from Japan. (Note: Waiting times can be slightly long, so plan your time accordingly.) Misato (The Centrepoint)
Kaneta Shoten
133 New Bridge Road, B1-44/45 Chinatown Point Singapore 059413 (Chinatown MRT)
Tel: +65 6443 8366
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 3:00pm, 5:00pm – 10:00pm (Mon – Fri), 11:00am – 10:00pm (Sat, Sun, PH)
Truffle Mazesoba and Tonkotsu Ramen Shop At Chinatown Point
Kaneta Shoten is the 2nd shop opened by the team Otoko Ramen, who has more than 10 years of experience in Japan making traditional style ramen.
Compared to the first outlet, this shop provides a wide variety of ramen type and Japanese rice bowls, and signatures include Kaneta Mazesoba ($13.90); Tsukemen ($14.90), Clear Shoyu Ramen ($10.90~$16.90), and Tonkotsu ramen ($11.90-17.90), Kaisen Don ($15.90) and Unagi Don ($12.90).
This is probably to cater to the family-type crowd that frequent Chinatown Point.
Their top recommendations are the Shoyu (soy sauce) Ramen which follows a traditional old Kyoto style, with a brown and clear tonkotsu broth with special tamari soy sauce added; and Tonkotsu (pork bone) Ramen made from boiling bones and collagen over heat for more than 20 hours, creating a creamy consistency. Kaneta Shoten (Chinatown Point)
Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee (Serangoon)
756 Upper Serangoon Road #04-26, Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre, Singapore 534626
Tel: +65 6280 1191
Opening Hours: 9.15am – 8.30pm (Tue – Sun), Closed Mon
Thai Springy Egg Noodles Now at Serangoon In Air-conditioned Cafeteria
Fans of Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee would probably be thrilled to hear about their latest opening at Serangoon to cater to the demand of North-Easties.
With the choice of Regular ($4), Regular Extra ($5), Large ($5), Jumbo ($6), one should simply just go for the Large and above as the portion for regular is small (at least for a guy like me).
Their winning formula would probably be its dry springy egg noodles tossed with ingredients like fried wanton, cured sausages and fried pork lard. Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee (Ang Mo Kio)
Poke Lulu
United Square, 101 Thomson Road #01-K13 Singapore 308591 (Novena MRT Station)
Tel: +65 8518 2455
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 8:30pm (Mon – Sun)
Poke Bowl Shop With Free Self-Serve Sauces
Poke LuLu should be number 20-something poké bowl shops in Singapore.
Customers can choose from three bowl sizes – small ($11.90), medium ($15.90) and large ($19.90) with white rice, brown rice or salad as the bases.
Each bowl comes with three complimentary add-on such as tobiko (flying fish roe), almonds, seaweed nori, jalapenos; with one super food add-on – choose from avocado, chia sees, ikura or quail egg. Poke LuLu (United Square)
Five Ten
237 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058786
Opening Hours: 10:00am – 10:00pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon
Taiwanese Inspired Dishes Priced $5 and $10
Know the drinking game “Five Ten”? Five Ten at South Bridge Road near Chinatown is named after it, and has all its food and drinks priced at $5 and $10.
Menu is inspired by the Taiwanese Kuai Chao, with bar-friendly grub such as Fried Smashed Potato with chili and white pepper spice ($5), Brussel Sprouts with umami shiitake mushrooms ($5), deep fried Tau Kwa with century egg ($5), Lu Rou – braised pork belly in a housemade soy sauce ($10), braised beef Tripe & Tendon skewers ($10) and Fried Chicken with nori mayo ($10).
Interesting concept. If only there are no other taxes and charges (just saying), to stay truer to that five-ten pricing.
