Tarte by Cheryl Koh – NEW Sit-Down Patisserie With More Cakes & Coffee, At Shaw Centre Level 2

Tarte by Cheryl Koh has relocated to Shaw Centre Level 2 with an expanded menu and cosy dining area – no sharing of space with Caveau Bar any more.

It started out as a takeaway retail concept by Les Amis Group’s Pastry Chef Cheryl Koh.

The store’s popularity went up, especially after when Chef Koh was named “Asia’s Best Pastry Chef” in the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.

For this new café, you can also expect cakes such as Fraisier – light sponge cake made with crème mousseline and French strawberry; Gateau Opera; and Dark Chocolate Cake.

All are sold at $10 per slice, $45 or $85 for a full cake, available in limited quantities daily.

The tarts are available in three sizes and more than ten flavours – an individual tart size at 8cm diameter ($10), regular size at 16cm diameter ($45), and a large meant for 8 to 10 persons ($75).

They are grouped according to “Fresh Fruit” – Cherry, Strawberry, Pear, Passionfruit Meringue, Clementine, Mixed Seasonal Fruit; “Chocolate & Nut” – Dark Chocolate, Pistachio and Hazelnut Tart; and “Seasonal” which is Hojicha currently.

Chef Koh shared that she wasn’t aiming to be super creative nor complicated, just a simple goal to create the best version of classic desserts.

She hopes that if someone thinks of the best chocolate tart or strawberry tart, hers will be top of mind.

I have tried a couple (maybe even at least 10 of them) over time, and personal favourites typically go to the fruit ones. I often find them of good quality, not overly glazed so that you can still appreciate the natural sweetness of the fruits.

Most recently, I tried the Cherry Tart and loved the lovely blood red colour and unique sour-sweet flavour and juiciness.

As for the tart base, it is buttery and classically French, simple and firm, does not leave crumbs over as you bite into them. However, I know some would prefer more crumbly or softer ones.

Other than a selection of coffee such as Latte ($6) and Mocha ($7), look out for the Hojicha Tea Latte ($7) and Island Delight Cold Brew Tea ($8).

The combination of tarts and tea can make for a relaxing time, something many busy city dwellers are badly in need of.
