[London] Just £10 for Flat Iron Steak in London.
That works out to be SGD18.60 or USD14.15, very affordably priced considering London IS one of the most expensive cities in the world.
And what really sealed the deal was that the steak was tasty – juicy and tender; the dining environment cool matched with casual, friendly service.
One of the newest additions to Covent Garden, Flat Iron is an amazing steakhouse that is known for serving perfectly pink and reasonably priced flat iron steaks.
They even have their own butchers on-site who host master classes.
Flat Iron has five locations. Two of these branches are located in Soho on Denmark Street and Beak Street, but both of them are quite small.
The new place in Covent Garden is quite different in terms of size, as it has two floors and offers over 4,000 square feet of room, added with an ice cream counter at this location.
I heard that the wait can go up to more than an hour. I was lucky then, led in down to the basement after a 10 minute’s wait in the cold. Well, it was off-peak period, but still.
The interior of Flat Iron was industrial-chich stylish with bare brick walls and antique-styled panelling, with an age-of-steam décor that offered an ideal setting for a steakhouse.
There were also huge mirrors on the walls, as well as a huge wooden table that can accommodate up to 12 guests.
The signature dish here is the flat iron steak that you can get for just £10.
Also known as butlers’ steak, this is a cut from the shoulder – flavourful with good marbling but slightly tough as it contains a membrane unless removed. Thus, more difficult to butcher.
It came long and thinly sliced on a wooden board, medium rare, served with house leaf salad. I thought it was slightly chewier than the usual cuts, but all in all still richly flavoured and tender enough.
Even discounting its price, it was a piece of good steak.
The sides were attractively priced as well, such as the Dripping Chips Batch (£3.50), Creamed Spinach (£3), Sophie’s Salad (£3.50) with blue cheese, candied pecans and lemon dressing; and Roast Aubergine (£4.50).
Keep in mind that the Flat Iron doesn’t take reservations, so it is best to head down early in the evening to beat the large crowds of both tourists and locals.
