[Hong Kong] Tokyo has its famed Tsukiji Fish Market; Taipei has its version at Addiction Aquatic Development; Bangkok has Shinsen Fish Market; and Hong Kong has its very own, but lesser known Yamataka Seafood Market 築地山貴水產市場 at Wan Chai.

Touted as Hong Kong’s version of the historical Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, Yamataka Seafood Market can be an attraction to Japanese food and seafood lovers.

It is situated at the Star Ferry-operated Wan Chai Pier next to Victoria Harbour, a modern building that covers a fish market, seafood restaurant, and a retail space.

As one of the most prominent distributors of fresh seafood in Japan, Yamataka brings the Tsukiji experience to Hong Kong and operates exclusively.

The various seafood is from Japan and around the world, aiming to be THE ultimate seafood market in Hong Kong.

Yamataka boasts of a scenic harbour view and 11,000 square feet of space. It is divided into different sections, each one catering to a specific ingredient or activity.

As you enter, the first area is the retail section.

Here, you will find loads of Japanese merchandise to bring home, from muscat grapes to snacks, seasonings, dried goods, and alcohol.

There is a take-out section where you can grab “portable” treats. The Whole Lobster Roll (HKD168/SGD28.03) and Sea Urchin in Squid Ink Bun (HKD68/SGD11.34) are recommended.

Next up are the food restaurant area, preparing seafood in 4 different ways – Sushi, Donburi, Hamayaki, and Lobster Rolls.

A pity that the different stations are operated independently, and therefore you cannot buy food from one restaurant to bring to another.

All the way at the end is the sushi bar – which is where I had my meal, with breath-taking views of the Victoria Harbour. My choice of the restaurant was led by my sight, as I went direct to the seats that offer the best views.

The sashimi section could be the highlight of your visit to Yamatake.

Get some assorted Sashimi (HK228, SGD38) or Sushi Set (HKD298, SGD49.80) with varieties of Hokkaido sea urchin, prime fatty tuna, salmon roe, yellowtail and 2 pieces of seasonal selection.

For those who prefer not to take raw items, there is Seared Sushi Set (HKD198, SGD33) featuring ten pieces of assorted semi-fatty tuna, golden threadfish bream, yellowtail, scallops and botan shrimp.

Overall, the pieces I had were generally fresh, though the quality could be just slightly above the average casual restaurants. It was an enjoyable meal, though I won’t say it was exceptional.

Slightly to the expensive side, though it is understandable due to the location and view.

For those coming to get some real Tsukiji-vibes, sorry, there was none of it really.

Aside from the seafood, customers are treated to a unique Fresh Tuna Cutting Show during Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, right in the middle of the restaurant.

You will not only be entertained by the “performance” of the chef. Do check out the schedule of the demos as they may have changed.

There are 2 ways to get to Yamataka: via ferry or MRT. You can take the ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier to Wan Chai Ferry Pier.

If you are taking the MRT, go to Wan Chai Station and use Exit A. Walk along the footbridge towards HKCEC. Turn right to Great Eagle Centre, then walk towards Wan Chai Ferry Pier. Total walking time is about 15 to 20 minutes. (Could be shorter but there is construction going on around the pier, which made finding the place slightly difficult.)

Tip: The rooftop has a 360 degree public park to get an awesome view of Hong Kong. Take all the photos you want. You can even enjoy your take-away sushi platter here. The lift to the rooftop plaza is located near the exit.
