Everyone has been telling me the same thing, “The year has been passing by so fast.”
YES, it is the last month of 2018 already, and here is the last “NEW CAFE” guide of the year. (I am still wondering if I should continue with this. Reason being, I do visit every one of them listed, and can be extremely time-consuming.)
We can all agree that F&B can be a tough industry as consumers have wide range of choices and easily on move to the next trendy product.
The trick is, how to retain their hearts.
All right. Thank you for reading this “New Cafe Guide” the last many, many months – I started this cafe guide in 2014, and enjoy this festive season of celebrations!
Nayuki – Vivocity
Vivocity, #01-207 1 Harbourfront Walk, Singapore 098585 (Harbourfront MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm
Opening: 8th December 2018 (Sat)
Popular Cheese Tea Bakery Café Opening In Singapore At Vivocity
Nayuki is first tea brand to pioneer the new concept of pairing euro-inspired bakes with fresh fruit blend premium teas in a stylish café setting.
The signature products to get are the Supreme Cheese Strawberry Tea ($8.30) and Strawberry Fresh Cream Bread called Strawberry Blush Mystique ($6.80).
These products are so immensely popular that the brand invested in a strawberry field to ensure premium strawberries of consistent quality are available all year round .
Ristr8to Singapore
Chef Avenue Food Court, 26 Tai Seng Street Singapore 534057
Famous Café From Chiang Mai By World Latte Art Champion
Ristr8to is one of the most famous cafes in Chiang Mai, and has opened in Singapore at Tai Seng.
Stylish (yet media-shy) owner-barista Arnon “Tong” Thitiprasert, has won several latte art championships, including the World Latte Art Champion 2017 and Thailand Latte Art Champion from 2015 – 2017.
It seems rather at odds at a “hipster café” will occupy a space within a food court, but I guess there are good reasons for doing so.
Their specialty cups include the Satan Latte ($5) – officially used after the World-winning latte art championship, Ficardie ($4.50) – their first signature coffee inspired by the Magic Coffee in Melbourne, and Godmother Mocha ($5) made using a secret recipe of Brazilian Cacao Syrup mixed with long Ristretto shot then topped with silky milk. Jab Coffee
252 North Bridge Road, Raffles City #B2-16
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 9:00pm (Mon – Fri), 9:00am – 9:00pm
Affordable Breakfast Meals And Sandwiches At Raffles City Basement
Jab Coffee which was previously located within the CBD area, has moved to Raffles City basement.
They pride themselves in their coffee standards, starting with a high quality selection of beans – both single-origin and blends, from their specialty roasting partners.
Complemented with their handcrafted selection of Gourmet Toasts ($4.50 – $9.50), Souffle Pancakes ($4.50, $6.00) and Granola Parfaits ($5), all priced affordable for a quick dine-in or takeaway.
Stack
4 Jalan Klapa, Singapore 199316
Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm Daily
Muslim-Owned Sandwich Shop Offering Makcik Rendang Sandwich
Stack should also gather some attention for their cheekily-named sandwiches such as Chunky AF ($15), Sweet Valley High ($11), Deli Alli ($13), Blue Steel ($11), Sleepy Nonna ($9), Green Goblin ($9), and Gold Finger ($9).
There are a couple of sandwiches I am keen to try, such as the Sweet Valley High with French toast, country apple and peach compote, hickory turkey ham, blueberry cream cheese with speculoos sauce.
So the Makcik sandwich ($13) comes with tri-tip beef rendang, garlic aioli, bruised tomatoes, garden greens, pickled onions and fresh jalapeños, in Rye bread.
The fillings were quite da-shiok, with that familiar spiciness that tickles your tongue, balanced by the amount of greens. Stack (Jalan Klapa)
Tiong Bahru Bakery (Safari)
130E Minden Road, Singapore 248819
Tel: +65 6877 4876
Opening Hours: 8am – 5pm (Mon – Sun)
Safari Themed Cafe At Dempsey
Tiong Bahru Bakery has gone on the “wild side” and has set up camp in Dempsey, right next to Open Farm Community at Minden Road.
Founder of Tiong Bahru Bakery Ms Cynthia Chua, was inspired most recently by her trip to the African safari in Botswana, specifically Selinda Camp and Gomoti Plains Camp.
So expect their French croissant and coffee under canvas, in a unique garden setting, safari-style. Tiong Bahru Bakery Safari (Minden Road)
The Green Ducklings
302 Beach Road, The Concourse Shopping Mall #01-06, Singapore 199600
Tel: +65 9126 6715
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon – Sun) (Soft launch timing)
Café Offering Unconventional Food Such As Cereal Prawn Pasta
The Green Ducklings is newly opened at The Concourse Shopping Mall at Beach Road, with Wakey Wakey as its neighbours.
The food items on the menu may get you noticing… Unagi Sandwich, Century Egg Pasta, Carrot Cake with Nacho Cheese.
Three pasta choices were available – Cereal Prawn Pasta ($18.90), Century Egg Pasta ($16.90), and Meatball Pasta ($15.90).
The Cereal Prawn Pasta was topped with a giant prawn, added with the crumbly bits that had this milky-sweetness. The Green Ducklings (Beach Road)
Brown Sugar Cafe
218 Balestier Road #01-01, Value Hotel Balestier, Singapore 329684
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 9:00pm (Mon – Fri), 8:00am – 9:00pm (Sat – Sun)
Brown Sugar Café – Brown Sugar Milk Tea Cafe Serving Truffle Drunken Chicken Noodles
The café is opened by the team behind Living Botanica – a fruit tea shop at Marina Bay Link Mall, but seems to have gone almost completely unnoticed.
While its exterior could suggest another “hipster café”, its offering is anything but that – traditional local coffee, bubble tea, toasts and some Asian Delights.
Food-wise, there are only four bowls available when I visited – Prawn Laksa Noodles ($7.80), Curry Chicken with Rice ($7.80), Truffle Noodle Drunken Chicken ($8.80) and Pork Collar Rice Bowl ($8.80). Brown Sugar Café (Balestier)
Hideout By The Local Box
260 Orchard Road, Robinsons The Heeren, #B1-2c, Singapore 238855
Tel: +65 9152 3213
Opening Hours: 8am – 9:30pm (Mon – Fri), 9:30am – 9:30pm (Sat – Sun)
Local food and coffee found at the basement of The Heeren
Need some local food and coffee early in the morning at Orchard Road? Other than the usual suspects, Hideout By The Local Box is opened at the basement corner of The Heeren.
It serves up local mains such as Classic Nasi Lemak ($8), Brown Rice Bowls ($9.00), Kong Bak Pau ($7.50), Dry Mee Tai Mak Laksa ($12.50), Soup Laksa with Soft Shell Crab ($13.50), and Soup Onsen Egg Mee Siam ($8.50).
While it is still the opening days, give them some time to settle down.
Hinoki Coffee
Honestbee Habitat, 34 Boon Leat Terrace #01-01 Singapore 119866
Opening Hours: 8am – 9pm (Mon – Sun)
Japanese-style Café Within Honestbee Habitat
Hinoki Coffee uses Kyoto-roasted beans and Hokkaido milk (supposedly, as my coffee was ‘normal’ milk), provided a taste of Japan’s coffee culture.
While payment needs some getting used to, because everything is processes by the app, at least there is free wifi.
Some cakes are available, such as the pricey Le Goma ($9.00) with black sesame souffle sponge.
Tiger Sugar
Chinatown Point, 133 New Bridge Road B1-42 Singapore 059413
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
Popular Brown Sugar Milk Shop Opening 2nd Branch In Singapore
Tiger Sugar 老虎堂 arrived in Singapore last month at the basement of Capitol Piazza attracting long queues. But the line has gotten much shorter.
The “Tiger Sugar” name came about from the ‘tiger stripes’ formed when the dark brown sugar syrup interacts with the thick milk in the cup. Tip: If you want to snap a photo, do it FAST.
The main best sellers are the Brown Sugar Boba Milk with Cream Mousse ($5.30), Brown Sugar Boba with Pearls with Cream Mousse ($5.30) and Brown Sugar Pearl Milk with Cream Mousse ($5.30).
To me, the best part of the drink was the caramelised sugar, the distinct fragrance hitting you before you even start drinking.
