Edition Coffee Roasters, Sydney – Black-Themed Scandinavian-Japanese Cafe, One Of Sydney’s Best Coffee Place

[Sydney] Ask what the top 10 cafes in Sydney are, and Edition Coffee Roasters is likely to land a spot.

René Redzepi who is the Executive Head Chef of world-famous restaurant NOMA, counts the coffee here as his favourite in Sydney.

This cafe founded by brothers Daniel Jackson and Corie Sutherland, serves up food that is Scandinavian and Japanese inspired.

Add that element of surprise. I once had a Chirashizushi Tacos, akin to your sashimi donburi topped with edible gold dust, to be wrapped with seaweed. Up-level Japanese don.

Previously, the flagship of Edition Coffee Roasters is located at Liverpool Street, but that shop has closed. There is another existing store at Haymarket.

If the décor of the previous space can be described as “day”, then this would be “night”.

While several Scandinavian-style coffee shops are typically minimalist white, Edition goes on an almost-all-black palette, with a modern looking sculptural organic interior.

They have a focus on using the freshest ingredients, keeping a small and easy to read menu to provide Sydney-siders with something exciting, new and different from the traditional breakfast you may find at local cafes.

While the menu is lean, some of the dishes they create are quite unusual which creates buzz amongst other foodies.

When I visited, dishes included Butter Poached Prawns with Apple and Pearl Senbei (AUD15), Barley Risotto with Jerusalem Artichoke (AUD16), Chicken Breast with Buttered Soy Mushroom and XO Sauce (AUD18), and Miso-glazed Lamp Rump and Smoked Mash (AUD20).

Note: the menu is ALWAYS changing.

Even though I had a rather safe choice of the Pork Katsu Burger (AUD12), it was almost faultless with crispy and juicy meat sandwich in a soft, butter house-baked milk bun.

They not only produce amazing meals, but are also known for their excellent coffee which they roast themselves.

The coffee comes in the standard variety of Milk (AUD4), Black (AUD4), and Filter (AUD4).

Edition is a very experimental restaurant. They try to fuse different aesthetics, vibes and cuisines and everything they make seems to work and draw customers in.

Definitely a refreshing change to the usual café scene.
