It continues to surprise me that there are 2 cafes, Lynn’s Cakes and Necessary Provision, at Eng Kong Terrace, which is ulu beyond words. No bus reaches there. There is not enough carparking. Yet, both enjoy a steady flow of customers.
Lynn’s Cakes & Coffee may not enjoy the same kind of fanfare as its neighbour café, but its quaint and elegant ambience with primarily white and light-coloured wood furniture is what I can identify more with.
Less of hipster, more of simplicity.
It is the kind of café that you flip past a magazine slowly at the corner seat, sipping flat white while having a cheesecake. Not over-rated, not over-hyped, not exactly to be seen.
The cakes are created by Lynn, which began her baking journey as she made cupcakes for her daughter’s class parties. Requests became more, and she eventually opened this cake with her husband after pursuing a formal course in Professional Cake Maker Diploma in Sugar Floristry.
Lynn’s standard favourites are the Carrot Cake, Red Velvet Cake, Dark Chocolate Heaven, Rainbow Cake and Hazelnut Meringue. Cakes are about $6-$6.50 per slice, to $8.50 for the rainbow.
This humble outfit does provide one of the best Carrot Cake in Singapore, with light yet creamy cream cheese wrapping the suitably moist sponge with strips of carrot within.
The other cake I tried, a weekend special of Chocolate Espresso, wasn’t that impressive. This was surprisingly dry in texture and flat in taste by contrast, and I almost went “This taste like Han’s”.
Being relatively new, my sense is that Lynn’s needs a few more signatures to stand out. The bakery café would have to attract people to come all the way, not just for the common red velvet and carrot, which is available like everywhere.
Otherwise, it deserves a visit if you are in the vicinity.
