9 Amazing Avocado Toasts In Singapore – From Carrotsticks & Cravings, Sarnies To Kith Cafe

Do you know that Gwyneth Paltrow has been credited to be the source of the popularisation of avocado toast? Okay, reserve all judgement and eye-rolling to yourself.

Avocado toast is a type of open sandwich made with mashed avocado (though some used sliced) and salt, pepper, and citrus juice on toast.

Other ingredients can include poached eggs, olive oil, hummus, red pepper flakes, feta, dukkah, tomato, to even bacon.

There was a point in time when every legit brunch café in Singapore would have an Avotoast in its menu someway, somehow… though not every place do them well (especially when pre-mixed avopaste is used.)

I must admit I am not the biggest fan of Avotoast, but it has its appeal – a healthier alternative, and that avocado is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. BUT take note that it can be high in calories (can be like 600 plus).

Here are 9 places you can head to for Avotoast cravings:

Carrotsticks & Cravings
75E Loewen Road Singapore 248845
Opening Hours: 8am – 3pm (Mon – Fri), 8am – 4pm (Sat – Sun)

7 Rodyk Street #01-34 Singapore 238216
Opening Hours: 7am – 4pm (Mon – Fri), 7am – 6pm (Sat – Sun)

Carrotsticks & Cravings delivers healthy superfood cuisine made of healthy, quality ingredients, the ideal spot for a mid-week perk or weekend brunch.

Founded by Terri-Anne, a Melbourne expat living in Singapore, Carrotsticks & Craving’s food is inspired by classics from Melbourne’s bustling cafe scene.

The Smashed Avo on Herb Sourdough served with feta and dukkah is one of the most popular items here. Add-on options include pomegranate, smoked salmon, leg ham and poached eggs.

You can also expect an eclectic range of vegan and vegetarian-friendly dishes, gluten-free, dairy-free and refined sugar-free goodies here.

Little Farms Café
491 River Valley Road, Valley Point #01-25, Singapore 248371
Tel: +65 6262 0619
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 8pm (Mon – Sun)

Little Farms has gained a little reputation since opening in 2016, known to offer fresh produce, meats, seafood, dairy, and groceries, source directly from suppliers in Australia and Europe.

It has recently expanded with a café and brunch concept at Valley Point
I had the Smashed Avocado on Toast ($17), feeling a slight pinch, though I must say that the mashed avocado was more creamy and luxurious than most of the average avo-toasts around.

At least they were generous with the amount of avocado given, and it was the quality type.

Also included were poached eggs, Meredith dairy feta, dukkah on the sourdough toast.

Starter Lab Bakery
721 Havelock Road Singapore 169645 (Tiong Bahru Station)
Tel: +65 9839 0408
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 5pm (Mon – Sun)

This bakery café essentially offers a wholesome menu of posh toast (so much so they have been reviewed to serve the “Gucci Of Bread”), sandwiches and build your own bread boards.

All the loaves and pastries served (other than the scones) contain sourdough/starter, and loaves are fermented over 36 hours before being baked.

Noting that many tables were ordering the same thing, I also had an Avocado Bawang ($12) – ”bawang” means “shallots” in Indonesian. (Though makcik bawang has a totally different meaning.)

I wished there was more creamy avocados spread on top for a more substantial meal. It was on the expensive side for the portion.

However, the sour dough bread was indeed a class of its own – crusty savoury sides, dense doughy yet soft, and flavourful enough.

In fact, good enough to eat on its own with just some butter, and so going little on the sriracha sauce allowed the bread to stand out.

Sarnies

Opening Hours: 7:30am – 10:30pm (Mon – Tues), 7:30am – 12:00am (Wed – Fri), 8:30am – 4:00pm (Sat – Sun)

Sarnies, named after a slang for sandwich ‘sarnies’, is a bustling café in the CBD serving hearty breakfasts, massive salads, homemade bakery treats, coffee, and of course, sandwiches.

Using grass-fed beef and chicken free from hormones and antibiotics, the café promises only fresh, quality ingredients in all its dishes. Even its bacon is cured in-house.

Head for the creamy Avocado Toast ($11.50) during the weekday breakfast (available from 7:30pm to 11am), included with feta, roasted cherry tomatoes, and dukkah.

Tel: +65 6734 8640

If you need breakfast (or nrunch) and coffee near Orchard Road, you would be pleasantly surprised to find that the outlet at Ascott operates from 6:30am, while Winsland House II opens from 7:30am onwards. Brunch is served till 5pm.

For those who are unaware, Winsland House is a 5 to 10 minute walk from Somerset MRT station. Walk in the direction of Killiney Post Office and Lanson Place.

Avocado on Toast is the IT brunch item and Kith Café does their Poached Eggs & Avocado ($16) well – a healthy treat of creamy crushed avocados, roma tomatoes, kale, walnut pesto poached eggs on sourdough.

Poulet + Brasserie
ION Orchard #B3-21, 2 Orchard Turn, Singapore 238801
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Not many would know that Poulet + Brasserie at ION Orchard has a menu quite unlike their existing one, this one takes inspiration from cuisines in different places – Melbourne’s café-hopping scene, a little bit of Thai and French fare, and Singapore’s own local dishes.

Throw in some healthy fats to your breakfast diet with Smashed Avocado with Poached Egg ($16++).

This open sandwich is served with a meticulously prepared 64-degree poached egg, rocket salad, crushed almonds, and roasted vine tomatoes.

You’ll notice some heat in your smashed avocadoes from the added chili flakes, and a splash of acidity to balance it out from lemon juice.

Bula Cafe
1 Keong Saik Road, #01-02, Singapore 089109
Tel: +65 8814 9358
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 10am – 4pm (Sat), Closed Sun

The toasts used here are freshly baked sourdoughs from the Michelin-starred Burnt Ends – also crowned of one of Singapore’s best restaurants in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.

For a $9 Avocado and Feta Toast, I must say that avocado lovers (and hipster millennials) would find the amount of avocado provided quite value-for-its-money.

This is considering most Avocado Toasts around could cost anything from $12 to $18 around.

I really loved the ingredient to toast ratio – one bite and you get both the crunch from the toast, and the creaminess from the avocado as well.

The toast is topped with Feta cheese and a sprinkle of spices that elevated the entire dish, though I would have loved slightly more feta.

They have various top-up options for the toast, such as eggs ($1.50), sautéed mushroom ($3.50) and even smoked salmon ($6.00). Reminder to self: add a poached egg next time.

Maxi Coffee Bar
31 Club Street, #01-02, Emerald Garden, Singapore 069468 (Telok Ayer MRT)
Tel: +65 9831 5760
Opening Hours: 8am – 5pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun

Maxi Coffee Bar is like your friendly neighbourhood joint, with people greeting you with a loud “Hi”, and looks set to have regulars from the CBD district.

The space is small – two counter seats, and two more on the bench at the side, and is more suitable for takeaway.

Toasts using locally sourced ingredients (according to them) are available, think Avocado Feta ($8), Miso Peanut Butter ($6), Ricotta Jam ($6) and Vegemite Cheese ($6).

I am not even an avocado-toast person, but enjoyed their creamy rendition with a touch of chilli flakes, on soft chewy sour dough.
